The modern world is a tough place to live. World leaders spend their days and nights working to find solutions to the big issues. But, will anyone ever find an answer to all these questions? We know one lady who would certainly give it her all—Leslie Knope. The Parks and Recreation character, played by Amy Poehler, holds a respected position in the Parks and Recreation Department of Pawnee, Indiana. Let's take a look at why Ms. Knope would make an ideal presidential candidate.

You would think that world leaders wouldn’t have a spare moment to think, let alone be running after members of the opposite sex, but some promiscuous men have headed up the top countries. Berlusconi served as the Prime Minister of Italy between 2008 and 2011, with the people of Italy clearly not troubled by his womanizing ways and his notorious ‘Bunga Bunga Parties.’ It’s not just the open-minded Europeans, with America also providing its fair share of loose leaders. The USA's 42nd president, Bill Clinton, also hit the tabloids for his extra-curricular antics with Monica Lewinsky. No worry of that with Leslie, though, because she knows her friends are more important. A #loyal president is something every country needs.

In "Citizen Knope," we see Leslie, stricken from the Parks Department, struggling away to get her work done from outside the office. Meanwhile, at Parks HQ, the rest of the team are planning her well-deserved Christmas gift. The lack of office doesn’t hinder Ms. Knope—nothing can stand in this woman’s way and she is willing to work her hardest (even giving up sleep) in order to achieve her goal. She wouldn’t be the first world leader to forgo sleep to get ahead. Britain’s first female prime minister, Margaret Thatcher, is said to have only got four hours sleep a night during her working week. However, it isn’t known how much beauty sleep The Iron Lady got during her weekends.

Feminism isn’t just about power dressing and getting a one-up on men; it is about women having the freedom to do whatever they want. Leslie embraces this modern idea and thinks that women should do whatever they are happy doing. However, for Leslie, this does not include pie baking, something that caused controversy during the episode "Pie Mary." This episode sees her being asked to participate in a baking contest, while her significant other, Ben, runs for congress. Not content to take on this traditional role, she fights for her rights. In her household, the roles are very modern with Ben taking up much of the culinary duties. Despite her own lifestyle choices, Leslie remains open-minded and admires all women no matter what their dreams are.

The USA is one of the most powerful nations in the world but, while other countries have embraced women into their leading roles, they have never had a woman in charge. Britain is now under the influence of its second female prime minister, with Theresa May stepping to the plate earlier this year. Other countries currently headed up by a female leader include: Germany, Lithuania and Norway. Europe has clearly shown that they have embraced feminism and are willing to welcome a leader into their arms, regardless of their gender, but America is yet to do so. Recently, Hillary Clinton got close to clinching the top job, but missed out to Donald Trump. We wonder how he would have fared against Leslie…

In "Soulmates," we see Leslie, before she has hooked up with her real soulmate Ben, embarking on the role of online dating. While working on her online dating profile, she gives the honest summation of herself: "yellow-haired female who likes waffles and news." While you could say that this isn’t the most creative of descriptions, it is very truthful and that is what we are looking for in a leader. Many presidential candidates make false claims and promises yet, at the end of their stint in The White House, these don’t always come to pass. Recently we saw Trump go back on a number of his promises within days of being elected. But, with Knope you get what you see (and who isn’t partial to a waffle?).

Leslie knows how to prioritize and that is an important trait for a leader to have. As the old proverb goes, "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy," and there is nothing dull about Leslie. While she fulfills her role as a grown-up (and is frankly killing it at adulting), she still knows how to let her hair down when she leaves the office. This mainly involves eating a large amount of breakfast food. She once confides in Ron asking, "Why would anybody ever eat anything besides breakfast food?" Well, the role of president is certainly a taxing one and they says that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Plus, we're sure all that sugar will help get her through the long meetings.

While an academic background puts any presidential candidate in a good position, it is also important to explore the more creative side of the brain. In "Jerry’s Painting," we witness the Parks Department attending an art exhibition and an uncharacteristically cultural outing. It is here that they see a painting Jerry has created, the subject of which bears a striking resemblance to Leslie. After becoming flustered, Jerry explains to Leslie that he had obviously thought of her while imagining powerful women. Not only is she appreciative of the arts, she is a muse.

She wouldn’t be the first art over to take up a post in the Oval Office, with Jimmy Carter, Dwight Eisenhower and even George W Bush all being keen painters in their free time.

In "The Treaty," the Parks Department employees host a model U.N. for a local school. However, this becomes overshadowed when Leslie and Ben air their relationship problems in the middle of the meeting. Leslie, however, still manages to jazz up this scene by having an outburst in French. Speaking in a foreign language shows a good education and is helpful in creating alliances with other countries. Unfortunately, the trend of presidents taking on other languages seems to have fallen out of favor. In Thomas Jefferson’s day, leaders would have had at least two foreign languages in their arsenal but today, this is not the case. Leslie may only know a few French phrases, but it’s a step on the way to creating strong relationships with other world leaders.

7 "I am a Goddess"

Keen to encourage the young girls of Pawnee that they can achieve anything, Leslie forms her own group, called the Pawnee Goddesses. These young ladies know that they are not inferior to the men and set out to prove the Pawnee Rangers, an all-male ensemble, that they can have a much better time. In much the same vein as the Boy Scouts, this group develop strong friendships and life skills along with receiving motivation from Leslie, with lines such as: "We're called the Pawnee Goddesses and we're freakin' awesome." So far, five US Presidents (including Obama) have been Boy Scouts—something that helped mould them into great leaders and team players.

One of the top areas in any candidate’s manifesto is their fiscal policies, with governments all over the world working to gain economic stability. Leslie is ahead of the game and has as least 28 ways to help assist in cutting costs. It is not known how else she intends to make savings, but we feel that the waffles budget will still be intact.

Not only is she concerned about her economic responsibility, but she is caring for the environment, reducing pollution from fossil-fueled lawnmowers and assisting in the reduction of greenhouse gasses. According to Statista, there are currently over 5 million sheep roaming the United States, so just think of the impact getting these to mow the lawns would have.

5 "I always carry emergency s'more rations in my car"

When the gang go out on a hunting trip, Leslie suggests they all make s'mores and, of course, she has come prepared.

A very important factor in gaining that coveted seat in The White House are the campaign rallies, where presidential candidates attend public demonstrations across the countries in the hope to gain the support of voters across the country. This means that there are a lot of road trips involved in getting a presidential campaign off the ground and, as we all know, road trips are only successful when you have a car crammed full of snacks. Leslie chooses to indulge her sweet tooth and can always be counted on to provide s'mores to the campaign team.

4 "I am big enough to admit that I am often inspired by myself"

How can you expect to inspire others if you can’t inspire yourself? Something we all need in a leader is an inspirational character—someone that we look up to and who makes us strive to be a better person. Leslie spends her life working to help others which is something that, no doubt, helps give her the inspiration to move ahead in her career and life. Collins dictionary provides the following definition for inspiration: "Inspiration is a feeling of enthusiasm you get from someone or something, which gives you new and creative ideas."

We can all agree that we would benefit from having someone in charge that fits the above description. With her never-ending reserve of self-belief, we think Leslie fits the bill very well.

3 "I have the most valuable currency in America: a blind, stubborn belief that I'm 100% right"

In the episode "2017," we see Leslie taking on the challenge of winning a piece of land, with the hope of creating a new national park. However, the equally stubborn Ron Swanson is on the opposing side of this argument (Ron having teamed up with a local tech company by the name of Gryzzl, to buy the land). Leslie remains true to her cause and, with complete faith in her own ideas, she battles through with sheer grit and determination.

Strong leaders need to believe in themselves and their ideas, because how else can they get others to believe in them? Unfortunately, this can also fall under the illusory truth effect, where if you hear/say a lie enough times, people will believe you. But Leslie wouldn’t do that.

2 “Look, if you didn’t want to be on call 24/7 for emergencies, then you should not have gone into the high-stakes world of banner-making"

All brands (and that includes political parties) know that marketing is the key in drawing in the crowds. Though it isn’t all about how much money you throw at the ads, as was proved during this year’s presidential battle. According to CNN, Hillary spent approximately $117 million on advertising, while the winning candidate Trump spent a mere $700,000.

So, while it has been proved that advertising can achieve success, it doesn't have to be expensive. Enter the banner. Leslie is a huge fan of a banner (heck, who isn’t?) and has clearly been utilizing the skills of her local printers on a regular basis. We hear that she has spent over $100,000 at this store while working for the Parks Department—positively thrifty in comparison to Trump and Clinton.

1 "Winning is every girl’s dream, but it’s my destiny"

In the aptly titled episode, "Woman of the Year," we see Ron Swanson, a man (!), awarded a Woman of the Year award. Leslie is outraged at this turn of events, having wanted this coveted title for her own (especially because she had assisted Ron is many of the projects that had gained him the award). A good guy at heart, Ron protests but is still given the award. Undefeated by this political act (with the Indiana Organisation of Women admitting that they had been trying to make a statement by picking a man), Leslie is still aiming for the stars. This is one lady that won’t stop until she gets to the top, because she knows this is her purpose in life. Vote Leslie!
