Scientology is a very controversial religion that's especially popular amongst celebrities. The religion has been around for decades, however, it was Tom Cruise who really brought a lot of attention to it when he got heavily involved with the church after marrying his first wife Mimi Rogers. The church has caused quite a few controversies over the years with all of the rules that have to be followed.

Because of all of the controversies, there have been a number of celebrities who have made the decision to leave the church. Many of these celebrities who have made the choice to leave have done so quietly, while others put up a fight and tried to reveal the secrets of the church. Whether you agree with the religion or not, Scientology is definitely a hot topic.

9 Leah Remini

Actress Leah Remini was a devout Scientologist for over 30 years of her life. The world was shocked when she made the announcement that she was leaving the church in 2013 without any warning. After leaving the church, she started to reveal all of the secrets of Scientology, and how the church wasn't what everyone thought it was.

She released a documentary on the topic called Going Clear in which Leah exposed the church and all of its secrets. She suddenly decided to leave when she decided that she was tired of them telling her how to think, and who she can and cannot talk to and what she can and cannot do. She began questioning things and figure out what else the church was hiding, then making it her missing to help expose all the bad things about the church.

8 Jerry Seinfeld

Jerry Seinfeld wasn't fully invested in Scientology like other celebrities, however, he did dabble in it a bit. According to Jerry, he decided back in the 1970s that he was going to take a class or two in order to try it out and see what everyone was talking about. Although he did find it pretty interesting, he ultimately decided that it wasn't for him and he didn't pursue it any further. Although he wasn't involved in it as much as some other celebrities we know, Jerry Seinfeld did give it a try nonetheless.

7 Nicole Kidman

It's no surprise that Nicole Kidman was involved with Scientology as she was married to Tom Cruise at one point. Nicole first got into Scientology when she first married To Cruise — she took courses and studied the religion, becoming extremely dedicated. And in just two years she really worked her way up the Scientology ladder.

Everything was going well until two years into her marriage to Tom, where she suddenly decided to leave the church as she wasn't happy with the leader, David Miscavige. For a period of time, Tom followed in her footsteps, but eventually, he got pulled back in, and their marriage came to an end as he turned to Scientology full time.

6 Michelle Visage

Michelle Visage is another celebrity who dabbled a bit in Scientology but wasn't as involved as others. According to Michelle herself, she took several courses that were very low-level. One of Michelle's best friends is Leah Remini, so with her encouragement, she decided to give it a try. She claimed that it was the pressure the church put on her to join and give them a large sum of money that really turned her off from joining. As a result, she quit before she could really begin. Leah, being the great friend that she is, didn't pressure Michelle at all, just appreciated that she gave it a try.

5 Mimi Rogers

Tom Cruise has had quite a few wives over the years, actress Mimi Rodgers being his first wife when the two got married back in 1987. Tom can thank Mimi for getting him involved in Scientology, as she was the one who introduced Tom to the church and the religion and really got him involved with things. It's not clear when or why, but Mimi is no longer with the church as she is listed as a "former" member of the church.

4 Sharon Stone

Actress Sharon Stone took interest in Scientology back in the 1990s. Like many other celebrities, Sharon took some classes and decided that she was going to stick with the church for a few years. It wasn't until she got married to journalist Phil Bronstein in 1998 that her feelings on the church started to change. Between her husband and Richard Gere, she was introduced to Buddhism, and she started to agree with those ideas a bit more. As a result, she left the church and now is fully invested in Buddhism today.

3 Demi Moore

Demi Moore was a part of the church of Scientology back in the 80s. She was a member of the church for quite a few years until she met Bruce Willis and married him back in 1987. It was then that she decided to leave the church, as Bruce wasn't a fan of Scientology, and he didn't want any of their children to be involved with the church. Because of this, Demi made the decision to leave. The two of them called it quits and divorced back in 2000, and even after their official divorce, She never rejoined the church.

Katie Holmes

It's no surprise that Katie Holmes was heavily involved with the Church of Scientology back when she was married to Tom Cruise. She converted to Scientology when they got together, as the two of them had a Scientology wedding. They had a complicated relationship, and they got a divorce after nearly six years together in 2012. Scientology played a big role in the relationship, and it is unclear if it was the factor that made them divorce. Since then, Katie has tried to get her life back to what it was before they were married, after an extremely messy divorce.

2 Lisa Marie Presley

Lisa Marie Presley might be the daughter of Elvis Presley, but she had her own involvement with the Church of Scientology. Lisa Marie got into the church because of her mother in 1977 and was a member of the church for decades. She talked highly of the church, and often spoke out about how good it was for her, and tried to recruit others. Things changed in 2016 when she left the church, her mom following about a year later. She had had enough and how it was impacting her and decided to leave for good.

1 Tiffany Haddish

Tiffany Haddish has a hilarious story as to why she decided to leave Scientology. Before Tiffany was famous, she was homeless for a period of time. Looking for shelter, she turned to Scientology for help. She took a few courses when the church found out she was homeless. As a result, they offered to let her stay at the church and pay her to help them recruit people. Therefore, Tiffany signed a contract with the church, and they gave her a place to stay. When they showed her where she would be sleeping, it was a bunch of bunk beds. Tiffany, who hates bunk beds threw a fit. The church terminated her contract and put her back on the street. Tiffany left Scientology all because of a bunk bed.
