Petito, a travel blogger, went missing during a cross-country road trip with her fiance on August 27th, 2021, but was only reported missing on September 11th, 2021. Her remains were found on September 19th, 2021 in Bridger-Teton National Forest, Wyoming. Her story captivated the nation, as many social media users analyzed her online presence for clues and insights into her life and relationship. Five different agencies searched for Petito, including the FBI. E!News posted over 10 stories about her in the last month. Yet, the murders of Indigenous people and people of color do not get nearly as much attention. E! News acknowledged this in a post on September 25th. In their caption, they presented the statistic that 710 Indigenous people have disappeared in Wyoming in the last decade.

The post received upset reactions from Instagram users, who called out E! News for their hypocrisy. Some even called on E!News to show the faces of the Indigenous women who are missing or were found dead, instead of Petito's widespread photos.

The story of Petito highlights the disparity in police resources and attention focused on missing white women, compared to those of color. A report by University of Wyoming found that Indigenous people were 100 percent more likely to still be missing after 30 days. It is believed that many Indigenous women are kidnapped and trafficked. Studies also highlight the difference in media portrayals of colored versus non-colored victims, with colored victims often being portrayed negatively.

So what made the Petito case so fascinating? Her large social media following may have had something to do with it. Petito had thousands of followers and subscribers across her Instagram, TikTok and YouTube accounts. She documented her travels in picturesque posts and beautiful videos. She also posted thoughtful captions, which may have made her relatable to the public. Many social media users also looked to Petito's social media posts for clues as to what may have happened.
