Jerry Seinfeld is one of the most successful comedians of all time. His innocuous brand of observational humor has earned him millions of dollars, making him one of the wealthiest people in Hollywood. Although he first rose to prominence in the acerbic "sitcom about nothing", Seinfeld, his stand-up comedy predominantly focuses on gentle comical insights into his family life, which is contrary to his aloof, uncaring persona on the classic sitcom.

Evidently, Seinfeld is a family man. He and wife Jessica, an author of cookbooks, have 3 kids together: daughter Sascha, 20, and teenaged sons Julian, 18, and Shepherd, 15. After a complicated start, Jerry and Jessica have enjoyed a loving marriage for over 20 years. The Seinfeld family has a colorful private life complete with pets, some bizarre TV rules, and even a dash of controversy. Here are 10 little-known facts about his wife and kids.

10 The Start Of Jerry And Jessica's Marriage Was Pretty Controversial

Sadly, cheating is pretty common in the entertainment industry. Just two months before she started dating Jerry, Jessica Seinfeld (née Sklar) had married theater producer Eric Nederlander. In fact, the two had met a few months before Jessica's wedding. Jessica ended up filing for divorce four months into her marriage to Nederlander, which must have been a shock for him. She married Jerry around a year later.

But Nederlander has since been accused of domestic violence by his second wife, which shows that cheating scandals are not necessarily as straightforward as they first appear.

9 Jerry Says That This Is The Secret To A Successful Family Life

Jerry has said that communication is key to a successful and healthy family life. As he told High Snobiety, "Number one, as often as you can, say to your wife, "What can I help you with?" Until she tells you that you're saying it too much. This is a good father and a good husband. Because you don't know what needs doing, but there's something. So ask."

8 Sascha Is Attending A Prestigious College

Sascha is all grown up now. The 20-year-old is Seinfeld's eldest child and is currently attending Duke University. After graduating from a private Manhattan girls' school in 2019, Sascha enrolled at Duke, which is ranked among the best universities in the US. Her mom expressed her pride on Instagram, declaring that a "New chapter begins for Sascha."

7 Jerry Wasn't A "Natural" Father At First

While he now appears to be an affable family man, Jessica has revealed that Jerry "wasn't a natural when our kids were born". She elaborated, "He wasn't immediately pushing strollers and carrying babies. He jokes that it took him a good 10 years to warm up." Thankfully, Jerry settled into fatherhood eventually and often shares sweet and loving anecdotes about his kids.

6 Jessica Was Involved In A Plagiarism Lawsuit

The Seinfeld family underwent a particularly stressful ordeal when Jessica was sued by fellow cookbook writer Missy Chase Lapine in 2008. It was alleged that Jessica had plagiarised Lapine's book, The Sneaky Chef: Simple Strategies for Hiding Healthy Foods in Kids' Meals, when writing her cookbook, Deceptively Delicious: Simple Secrets to Getting Your Kids Eating Good Food. In addition to the concept of the books supposedly bearing similarities, Lapine also alleged that Jessica copied her cover art as well.

Jerry Seinfeld made matters worse when he appeared on David Letterman's show and described Lapine as "hysterical" and insinuated that she may be planning on becoming an "assassin". However, the Seinfelds ultimately won the lawsuit.

5 Sascha Supports BLM

According to her Instagram bio, Sascha is a strong supporter of the Black Lives Matter movement. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree, as her father is well known for rejecting offensive comedic material and refuses to use racial slurs, which are sadly all too common within the world of stand-up.

Notably, Jerry was visibly appalled by comedians Louis C.K. and Ricky Gervais uttering a highly offensive racial slur in front of Chris Rock during a sit-down interview for 2011's Talking Funny. When C.K. mentions that he's never heard Seinfeld use said racial slur, Seinfeld simply explains that he finds no humor in the offensive word.

4 Jerry Doesn't Want His Kids Watching Reality TV

As a sitcom veteran, Jerry is vehemently opposed to reality TV. While he rarely gets angry at his kids, Jerry finally snapped when he saw his daughter doing something that infuriated him. "The one time I really, really got upset was when my daughter was watching the Kardashians on her phone in her bed and I could not take that scene," he told Mr Porter, "For someone who for their whole life, television was the Olympics of being a comedian. It was only for the very best."

He added that he's "offended by reality television" and that "these people are not doing anything interesting". Although we think Jerry was a bit too harsh in this instance, we appreciate his candor.

3 His Son Did Something Really Sweet For Him

There are many different fan theories regarding Seinfeld, from the plausible to the absurd. But one that endures is that every episode supposedly contains a reference to Superman. This one makes a lot of sense since Jerry is actually a massive Superman fan in real life. Subsequently, he relayed this really sweet story about his son.

"Like, my son is learning to play the Superman theme song on the piano as a present for my birthday", the comedian told Mr Porter, "Catching him doling that, that completely changes your life. He knows I love Superman, so he decided he's going to do that as a present."

2 The Family Loves Cats

Jessica Seinfeld's Instagram is full of pics of her feline friends and this obsession has become a long-running gag among her followers. For instance, when congratulating her daughter on her admission into college, one user commented, "Why aren't the cats representing? Typical."

1 Jerry Isn't Going To Interrogate His Daughters Over Their Boyfriends

Many dads are unhappy when their daughters grow up and start dating. A father interrogating his daughter's new boyfriend serves as the basis for many a sitcom or movie plot (see: Meet the Parents). But Jerry refuses to be that kind of dad.

"I hated those dads when I was a kid dating and you would go to a girl's house and the father would be so mean and I don't want to be that guy," he told People, adding, "You feel possessive and protective but I refuse to be one of those disapproving dads."
