Criminal Minds' Matthew Gray Gubler and Marvel star Kat Dennings are among the Hollywood couples that only dated for a very short time but managed to stay in each other's circles.

Gubler, whose acting credits also include (500) Days of Summer, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou and Alvin and the Chipmunks, and the 2 Broke Girl$ co-protagonist were in a relationship for a few months in 2007. After breaking up, the two actors remained close, appearing together in a number of projects.

Matthew Gray Gubler And Kat Dennings' Relationship

Gubler and Dennings dated for only a matter of months in 2007. Despite keeping their relationship relatively private, the two were spotted attending events together, with Gubler defining Dennings his "romantic interest".

The Thor star, now engaged to musician Andrew W.K., has always been secretive about her romances, which may be one of the reasons why her brief relationship with Gubler never made the headlines.

At the time, they both had only just started in the business. Dennings had starred in The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Gubler, more known thanks to his role as Dr. Spencer Reid on Criminal Minds, had booked a small part in Wes Anderson's 2004 movie Life Aquatic and voiced Simon in Alvin and the Chipmunks three years later. Their careers were at the beginning, which could explain why their relationship wasn't more publicized.

Dennings And Matthew Gray Gubler Starred On Suburban Gothic Together

The pair broke up some time in 2007, though the exact timeline of their romance isn't clear. It seems that Gubler and Dennings' split was amicable as not only did they manage to stay friends, but they also starred together as love interests on comedy horror Suburban Gothic, released in 2014.

Directed by Richard Bates Jr., the film sees Gubler as protagonist Raymond, returning home to live with his parents as he's unable to find a job. While there, he witnesses paranormal occurrences and reconnects with local bartender and former classmate Becca (Dennings). Together, they try to prevent the souls of everyone in town from being harvested by an evil spirit, falling for one another in the process.

Suburban Gothic, which also features a cameo from Pink Flamingos' John Waters and includes Twin Peaks' Ray Wise in the role of Raymond's dad, is a testament to the chemistry between Gubler and Dennings, a bond that appears to transcend their short-lived relationship.

In 2015, Gubler confirmed he and Dennings were still on good terms, opening up on working on the movie with her, calling it "one of the best experiences".

Speaking with Glamour, the actor said her and the WandaVision star had known each other "for a long time," adding: "I'm still really good friends with her. I love Kat. She's the best."

"We did a movie, Suburban Gothic, together, and that was one of the best experiences. To make a movie with people you're dialed in with in real life is the closest thing to being in a band with someone. It's so nice to have a creative force that you can create something better together than alone, and that's what it was like working with her."

Matthew Gray Gubler Explains Why He's Friends With His Exes

In that interview, Gubler got candid about what it takes for him to fall in love with someone and why he often wants the people he has dated in his life even after the relationship has come to a close.

"I fall in love with wonderful people and people that can't be replicated. They are completely unique individuals, and those people are really rare and you can't let them go," he said.

"You gotta be friends with them forever because if I'm going to date someone, it's a real big thing for me. It means that I feel that we're tied together for life, whether they like it or not!"

Speaking of Dennings, he added: "Kat is marvelous. She's one of the funniest people I know and such a talented actress, a brilliant mind, a warm-hearted person, and I love her and her family."

Gubler seemingly hinted at their relationship ending because of his hectic schedule on Criminal Minds, though this was never explicitly stated.

"I met [Dennings] a long, long time ago—it was at the start of my show. Being on a show like this is not conducive to having a real life because for those first five years of Criminal Minds, we were easily doing 15-hour days. But we were always close, and now that she's on a show, I feel like she understands."

Dennings And Gubler Reunited On Her Series Dollface

Whatever the reason for their split may be, there seems to be no bad blood whatsoever between the two stars.

The two lovers-turned-friends recently reunited on Hulu's prematurely-axed Dollface, where Dennings stars as protagonist Jules and also serves as an executive producer alongside Margot Robbie and others.

Gubler was cast in the recurring role of Wes, a veterinarian and love interest of Jules. The show being canceled after only two seasons means fans will never get to find out whether Jules and Wes get together, but don't fret as all clues suggest that this may not be the last time Dennings and Gubler have starred opposite each other.
