20-year-old Rachel Zegler made her Hollywood debut in legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg's West Side Story. She has now earned a Golden Globe nomination for her role under the "Best Actress - Comedy/Musical" category. The film is the second adaptation of the 1957 stage musical of the same name and is based on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.

The synopsis for the film reads: "Love at first sight strikes when young Tony spots Maria at a high school dance in 1957 New York City. Their burgeoning romance helps to fuel the fire between the warring Jets and Sharks -- two rival gangs vying for control of the streets."

She's One Of The Youngest Golden Globe Nominees

The actress went viral for posting a tweet of herself singing Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper's Shallow back in 2018. She was a 17-year-old high school student when she was chosen from a pool of over 30,000 applicants, and applied for the role, responding to Spielberg's casting call on Twitter.

Zegler was selected to star opposite Ansel Elgort and played Maria in the movie. She has received critical acclaim for her performance.

Prior to the release of West Side Story, Zegler was cast in a key role in Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2021) alongside actor Zachary Levi. The actress was later cast as Disney's Snow White in a live adaptation of the classic film. The film will be helmed by Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer).

Following the announcement, Webb stated: "Rachel's extraordinary vocal abilities are just the beginning of her gifts. Her strength, intelligence, and optimism will become an integral part of rediscovering the joy in this classic Disney fairy tale," in a report from Deadline.

Zegler's fellow Golden Globe nominees include Alana Haim (Licorice Pizza), Emma Stone (Cruella), Jennifer Lawrence (Don’t Look Up), and Marion Cotillard (Annette).

Before making a mark in Hollywood, the actress starred in local productions where she played the roles of Belle in Beauty and the Beast, Cosette in Les Miserables among others. Interestingly, the actress has also started in a production of West Side Story, where she portrayed Maria — the same character she embodied for her big-screen debut.
