Actor Johnny Depp has spoken out about being boycotted by Hollywood amid accusations of domestic violence against his ex-wife Amber Heard.

The 58-year-old actor spoke to The Sunday Times about his new drama Minamata, which has not yet secured a U.S. release.

Depp called the last five years "surreal."

The Oscar-nominated actor lost his libel suit against The Sun last year after they labeled him a "wife-beater."

Amid the headlines, movie studio MGM has suspended the release of Minamata, which is directed by Andrew Levitas.

Depp plays the role of photojournalist W Eugene Smith in Japan in the '70's.

Last month, director Levitas wrote a letter to MGM accusing it of "burying" the motion picture as result of Depp's legal issues, Deadline reported.

Depp told The Sunday Times: "Some films touch people and this affects those in Minamata and people who experience similar things. And for anything … for Hollywood’s boycott of me? One man, one actor in an unpleasant and messy situation, over the last number of years?"

Social media commenters were mostly #TeamDepp and wanted to see his new film.

"Things are very rarely black and white and I think that it's wrong to boycott Johnny Depp. I would like to see this film and others that he may make," one fan wrote online.

"If anyone should be blacklisted; it should be Amber! She comes across very disingenuous," a second added.

"Abusers in hollywood leave a long trail usually, he doesn't have one, i'd say she is the liar. Other victims would be jumping out the wood work in there dozens wouldn't they? he is one of the poor folk who have been falsely accused by a witch wanting a better career," a third commented.

Heard and Depp, 57, have repeatedly accused each other of domestic abuse during their two-year marriage that ended in 2017.

Depp lost his libel case against The Sun publisher News Group Newspapers and executive editor Dan Wootton for calling him a "wife beater" in a 2018 article.

"Gone Potty: How can JK Rowling be 'genuinely happy' casting wife beater Johnny Depp in the new Fantastic Beasts film?" the headline read.

High court judge Justice Nicol determined that the claim was "substantially true" and ruled the libel case in the publisher's favor.
