While a lucrative profession, Hollywood actors have had some not-so-glamorous moments on-set. Large scale movie productions have posed the occasional risk to the cast and crew throughout the years. Even though on-set safety protocols exist, mistakes still occur. Whether an actor performs his or her own stunt, musical number, or dance routine, injuries happen, no matter how cautious the health and safety team might have been.

Action movies aren’t the only film genre where freak accidents take place. The Wizard of Oz, The Exorcist, and the Titanic are all surprising examples in which an actor suffered a shockingly serious injury. It wouldn’t be a far cry to call each incident a “near-death” moment. Here are 10 actors who were seriously injured while on-set.

Sylvester Stallone sustained many injuries throughout the Rocky franchise. However, his most severe injury took place during the filming of Rocky IV in 1985. During his battle with Ivan Drago, played by Dolph Lundgren, the actors agreed to engage in actual physical combat. Stallone took a mighty uppercut to the chest, causing his heart to swell and blood pressure to rise. He was quickly airlifted to the ICU at St. John’s Hospital.

Kate Winslet went from starlet to superstar when Titanic spooled in theaters. She barely made it through production, though, after facing several scary moments on-set. Winslet chose not to wear a wetsuit under her wardrobe while filming the water scenes, causing her to contract pneumonia. She also nearly drowned after her gown caught on a gate underwater, preventing her from rising to the surface. Thankfully, both the character and actress live to tell the tale of surviving the Titanic. We can’t say the same for Jack.

Though Jack Haley is credited for playing the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz, Buddy Ebsen was originally cast for the role until a near-death-experience. Aluminum dust can be toxic, causing breathing and lung problems that could potentially kill someone.

However, the trap door she was standing on didn’t release in time, resulting in several third-degree burns on her hands and face.

3 Linda Blair And Ellen Burstyn In 'The Exorcist'

The Exorcist Movie Facts

The Exorcist required a few stunts to simulate some wild-looking “demonic powers.” Ellen Burstyn, who played Regyn’s mother, was attached to a harness and yanked to the floor one scene, shattering her tail bone and leaving her with a permanent back injury. Linda Blair, who played the little girl, also left The Exorcist with irreparable damage to her back. Jackie Chan, much like Sylvester Stallone, has injured himself multiple times throughout his action-packed career, all for the love of martial arts. However, one stunt in 1986 nearly ended his life. One scene required Chan to jump from a wall and onto a tree branch. On his second attempt, the stunt went awry and he hurtled to the ground at a 20-foot height. Not to mention, he slammed his head against a rock. Still alive to tell the tale, Chan has a permanent hole in his skull.
