Jenner was married to Kris Jenner, the "momager" of the Kardashian clan and we had an inside look into her life with the family's television show; Keeping Up With the Kardashian. However, while the media only shows only so much about Jenner's life, there is so much more to learn about the former Olympic star before her transition.
The younger generation may only be familiar with Jenner's life because he raised the Kardashian/Jenner family on the hit reality show. Later, everyone would learn that the rumors about her transformation were true after her exclusive interview with Vanity Fair. But how was Jenner's life before she became known as Caitlyn Jenner?
Here are 10 photos of Caitlyn Jenner growing up and her life before she played a big role in the Kardashian family and five photos of Jenner from the last five years that show how she is living her true life now.
Before her transition, Caitlyn Jenner was born William Bruce Jenner on October 28, 1949. Before the 69-year-old was known for his role as the famous father for the Kardashian/Jenners on E! Network’s hit show Keeping Up With the Kardashian's, Jenner was a terrific athlete. From early on in his life, Jenner focused on sports.
Jenner earned a football scholarship to Graceland College (now Graceland University) in Iowa, but sadly a knee injury forced the star to quit. However, seeing her athleticism and determination, the school's track coach urged Jenner to try out for the decathlon. She would later debut as a decathlete in 1970 in one of the top track and field events in Des Moines, Iowa, finishing in fifth place.
Jenner had a very successful career early on in her life, qualifying for the American Olympic team in 1972. She started to get noticed by publications after breaking world records for men's decathlon events in the 1970s and was featured on the cover of Track & Field News magazine's August issue in 1974.
Jenner's success in sports led to many commercials, infomercials, and primetime shows on television. Before she starred on I Am Cait, a reality show that followed Caitlyn and her new life and journey, she was fairly well known in the U.S. thanks to her sporting achievements. People all over the country recognized Jenner and were extremely proud of the athlete.
Jenner reached new heights when she became the Olympic gold medalist in the Montreal 1976 Summer Olympics in decathlon. Again, she would break personal and best records that year, achieving five personal bests on the first day of the men's decathlon. Jenner became an American hero because of her pure determination and confidence in winning.
During her Olympic win, Jenner grabbed an American flag and carried it during his victory lap, beginning a tradition that we see today for Olympic winners. Jenner was named a national hero and received the James E. Sullivan Award as the top amateur athlete in the U.S. and was named the Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year in 1976. During the late 70s, fans would see Jenner on just about everything, from cereal boxes to covers of magazines.
Jenner's new fame came with many opportunities in Hollywood. The Olympic hero was being considered for the role of Superman, which ended up going to actor Christopher Reeve. She starred in the made-for-TV movies The Golden Moment: An Olympic Love Story and had small roles on television shows, appeared in game shows and would later star on the E! Network's hit show Keeping Up With the Kardashians.
Jenner was married to three different women before her transition in 2015. The first marriage was to Chrystie Scott (pictured above) from 1972 to 1981 and they had two children together, Burt Jenner and Cassandra Marino. In 1981, Jenner married actress Linda Thompson and had two sons with her named, Brandon and Brody Jenner. The couple divorced in 1986. In 1991, Jenner married Kris Kardashian and had two daughters with her, Kendall and Kylie Jenner. Jenner is also the stepfather to Kris' children, Kourtney, Kim, Khloe, and Robert Kardashian. Their divorce was finalized in 2014.
After just five months, Kris and Bruce Jenner wed and their family grew to six children between the two. The couple was married for 24 years before Jenner came out and the marriage ended in divorce in 2015. Coming out as a trans woman, the family showed support for Caitlyn however drama ensued when Caitlyn's memoir revealed some not so nice comments about his ex-wife.
After his divorce from Kris Jenner, Caitlyn got the opportunity to have her own reality show on the E! Network called I Am Cait. The show followed the new life of Caitlyn as a woman and how the people closest to her felt about her transition. While her life with Kris was over, Caitlyn was just beginning a new one with family and friends that would stand by her side throughout her transformation.
There was a ton of family drama after Caitlyn released her memoir, The Secrets Of My Life. Kris' daughters, Kourtney, Khloe, and Kim believed they had to defend their mom after a few negative statements were made about her in Caitlyn's book. However, it seemed a bit awkward for fans to watch it all go down since Kendall and Kylie appear to have a closer bond with Caitlyn as opposed to the other sisters.
Caitlyn is known as a terrific motivational speaker and ever since she debuted her new image and name, she has been extremely open to the public and the media. Her family has shown tons of support for her, especially her two daughters, Kendall and Kylie Jenner, and she has been recognized as the most famous openly transgender woman in the world.
With Caitlyn's new life comes new romance, and she's been seen with 22-year-old transgender model Sophia Hutchins for quite some time. Heat magazine stated that the two are even thinking about tying the knot. "Cait really sees herself spending the rest of her life with Sophia," the magazine wrote. The relationship seemed to begin when Caitlyn had her fallout with the Kardashian family.
Even with the Kardashian family fallout, Caitlyn looks genuinely happy with her new life and new love. She even attended the recent Vanity Fair Oscar's Party with Sophia Hutchins and reunited with daughter Kendall on the carpet where the two shared a sweet embrace. Caitlyn looked stunning in a short gold dress and white heels while her date wore a sheer black gown.
Caitlyn Jenner has made a powerful impact on the world ever since she won that gold medal and waved the American flag during the 1976 Olympics. Jenner is a more confident and stronger woman ever since she made her transition public, despite dealing with hardships with her close family.
