“In 2007, I overdosed on pills, and I went into the hospital. I was close to 230 pounds. I'm not sure how I got so big, but I have ideas. The coating on the Vicodin and the Valium I'd been taking for years leaves a hole in your stomach, so to avoid a stomach-ache, I was constantly eating — and eating badly.”

Given his words with Men’s Health, Eminem was in a dark place over a decade ago, gaining a serious amount of weight. He needed a lifestyle change and that’s exactly what he did. Along with changing his eating habits, running and exercising at home became a part of his daily routine.

Here are 12 things Eminem does to stay in shape nowadays. Enjoy, let’s get started!

12 A Lot Of Running

“I became a hamster. Seventeen miles a day on a treadmill. I would get up in the morning, and before I went to the studio, I would run eight and a half miles in about an hour. Then I'd come home and run another eight and a half.”

For Eminem, these types of runs became the norm and he felt obliged to burn at least 2,000 calories total a day.

11 Keeping Consistent Is The Key

“I feel like if I step away from it for too long if I have a crazy week and take a five-day break, it'll be like starting over. Once you're at a place where you've made progress and you've got some time invested in it, you don't wanna quit and give up what you started.”

Wise words from Eminem, knowing the importance of keeping things consistent; he put a big emphasis on that during his dramatic weight loss in 2007.

10 Home Workouts

Given his stardom, it was a wise decision for Eminem to get serious about his workouts in the comfort of his own home.

Believe it or not, early on, Eminem didn’t rely on a trainer but instead workout DVDs, that would guide him through an entire workout.

9 Scaled Back On Burning Too Many Calories

Moderation is key, however Eminem was emptying the gas tank really quickly during his weight loss. He detailed being OCD over how many cals he’d burn per day;

“I started getting OCD about the calories, making sure I burned 2,000 every day. In the end I got down to about 149 pounds. I ran to the point where I started to get injured. All the constant pounding from the running began to tear up my hip flexors.”

8 Avoiding Pullups

This is all about the things Eminem does to stay in shape – however, we also felt the need to include the things he doesn’t do, like pull-ups for example.

During his interview with Men’s Health, the rapper admitted that he strongly disliked the exercise and truly never got the hang of it.

7 Short-Breaks

While following along with workouts from the likes of P90X, Eminem’s routines would feature little breaks in between exercises.

He did admit with Men’s Health that at first, he would pause the workouts because it got a little too grueling. However, eventually, he was able to get through a workout without having to hit the pause button.

6 Boxing

He wasn’t taking boxing too seriously at first – however, that all changed once he finally decided to commit to getting sober.

Boxing is a great form of cardio and another element that aided in Eminem’s weight loss more than a decade ago. Boxing is still used by so many Hollywood celebs nowadays.

5 One Muscle At A Time

Eminem’s current workouts usually feature one or two muscle groups per day. He isn’t hitting extreme full-body routines or anything like that.

He’ll have different days focusing on different muscle groups like an arm day, leg day and chest day, for example. At the very least, these types of workouts don’t drag on for too long.

4 Hypertrophy Based

Eminem’s workouts are hypertrophy based, meaning he hits reps to build the muscle; he isn’t after strength-based workouts or muscle endurance, his rep ranges are usually between 8 and 12 reps per set.

Going under is usually more strength-based while going over taxes the muscle and is regarded as muscle endurance.

3 Used It As An Addiction

“It gave me a natural endorphin high, but it also helped me sleep, so it was perfect. It's easy to understand how people replace addiction with exercise. One addiction for another but one that's good for them.”

As Eminem stated with Men’s Health, he managed to change his dangerous addiction into a positive one, really focusing on fitness and making improvements.

2 Bodyweight Exercises

He used P90X and Body Beast, which are two workout DVDs that feature a lot of bodyweight exercises.

Eminem needed these types of workouts back in the day, especially given that he was training from home, working out with limited equipment. Of course, the exercises got the job done as he lost an insane amount of weight.

1 2007 Overdoes Changed His Perspective

“When I got out of rehab, I needed to lose weight, but I also needed to figure out a way to function sober. Unless I was blitzed out of my mind, I had trouble sleeping. So I started running.” (Men’s Health)

That mindset shifted everything for Eminem, and he became sober because of it.
