Everyone has tough days at work or jobs that they aren’t all that fond of. But while most people have learned how to just roll with the punches and deal with it, it always seems like a lot of famous movie stars and directors never can't deal with not getting their way. Sometimes the stars of the movie and the people behind the camera just do not get along and even come to blows. Other times, some of the biggest stars in the world are going through personal issues that they just can’t manage to leave at home. And sometimes? People just seem like jerks.

For whatever reason, these stars weren’t able to complete their movies without losing their minds. Here are 15 of the worst celebrity meltdowns on movie sets.

15 George Clooney – Three Kings

VIA: Giphy

David O. Russell has made a name for himself over the years, directing a host of critically adored films that have gone on to win Oscars, like Silver Linings Playbook and The Fighter. He’s also proven to be a bit more aggressive of a director than anyone is ever really comfortable with. And while many of the casts he’s worked with have given him the benefit of the doubt and worked around his volatile anger and sudden outbursts, others have bristled against it.

An actor who couldn’t stand it was George Clooney.

The two had been gnawing on one another’s nerves for the entire filming of Three Kings, but it was when Russell berated and fired a crew member that Clooney got tired of it all. He confronted the director and got a headbutted for it. This led to Clooney dropping all pretences and grabbing Russell into a headlock. The two wrestled in front of the rest of the cast until they were pried apart. He’s said in interviews that if he sees Russell again, he’ll probably end up punching him in the face.

14 Jamie Foxx – Any Given Sunday

VIA: Uproxx

Any Given Sunday helped push Jamie Foxx into the spotlight as a film star. The movie about a football team trying to build back up was fantastic when it first hit screens, and it’s managed to stay relevant today. But the actual production of the movie was more complicated than anyone expected.

The worst moment on the set came when a full-on brawl broke out between Foxx and co-star LL Cool J.

In a scene where their two characters get into an on-field argument, LL Cool J improvised by hitting Foxx. The scene broke, and Foxx told Cool J to not do that again. In the next take, apparently choosing not to heed Foxx's warning, LL Cool J hit him again. And this time, Foxx hit back. A massive fight came out of it, with the crew desperately trying to tear the two apart. And to make matters even more ridiculous, director Oliver Stone was just mad that they didn’t manage to get it all on film.

13 Lily Tomlin – I Heart Huckabees

VIA: Slash Films

Man, David O. Russell does not have a great track record, huh? The filming of I Heart Huckabees, an existential mystery film that’s even weirder than you’d expect from that kind of premise, proved to be too much for veteran comedy star Lily Tomlin. She and Russell grew frustrated with one another and failed to actually work together for an extended period of time. She refused to take his direction on set, ending up in aggressive shouting matches with Russell where expletives (usually ones starting with the letters “F” and “C”) were thrown around liberally by the others. Even when Tomlin tried to do some damage control after production ended and make it seem like they’d buried the hatchet, videos of their disputes leaked to the press and neither were looking all that good after the fact.

12 William Shatner – Star Trek

VIA: StarTrek.com

William Shatner made a name for himself on Star Trek, and has been using the momentum he got from that series to sustain his career for decades. But while he’s embraced that aspect of his career now, it wasn’t always that way. When the show was filming, he bickered with the cast and crew constantly, getting on the nerves of his fellow stars.

The most famous of these moments came during a recording for an animated Star Trek bit. His specific pronunciation of the word sabotage surprised the director, who was expecting Shatner to say use a more common pronunciation. Instead, Shatner pronounced the way in a specific manner, defending it as how he just says that word. When the director tried to get him to do a take with the typical way, Shatner bluntly told him "no" and refused to do it. It was a weird line to draw, and the sort of incident that still helps fuel the decades-long feud between Shatner and former Star Trek co-star, George Takei.

11 Gene Hackman – Royal Tenenbaums

VIA: Uproxx

You know when your former co-workers come to know you as a “scary” person, that means you’ve maybe stepped over a few too many lines in the workplace. But that’s exactly how the cast of The Royal Tenenbaums felt about Gene Hackman. Playing the patriarch of the strange but charming Tenebaum family, Hackman gave a memorable and hilarious performance as a bad dad who uses his final days of life to manipulate his family.

The rest of the cast has spoken about his on-set antics at length, but director Wes Anderson specifically seems broken up about it. He’d written the part specifically for Hackman, but due to the otherwise stacked cast they weren’t able to pay Hackman much for his work. And after a long and storied career, Hackman just didn’t have the patience to really deal with that. So he didn't put his all into the film, and his attitude showed it.

10 Shelly Duvall – The Shining

VIA: Rolling Stone

The Shining is one of the best horror movies (and books) of all time. The reason it came together so well was thanks to Stanley Kubrick, a notoriously prickly and controlling director who wasn't afraid to go above and beyond behind the scenes. He even went all out with his actors, reducing some of them to tears and almost driving Jack Nicholson to punch him in the face.

The person who got the worst of it was Shelly Duvall.

Partly in an attempt to help her act as shocked and horrified, Kubrick treated her horribly during filming. His style almost broke Duvall completely, with the actress left a shaking mess by the end of the production. While the rest of the cast and crew were understandably angry with Kubrick, Duvall just wanted to put as much distance between herself and the movie as she could.

9 Lindsay Lohan – The Canyons

VIA: ComingSoon.net

After a rough couple of years, Lindsay Lohan was trying to resurrect the career so many people were confident she would have in her youth. She signed on to star in The Canyons, a drama filled with sexuality and intrigue that everyone was convinced would help bring her back to the forefront.

But while it did get people talking about Lohan again, it wasn’t for any good reasons.

Lohan reportedly wasted time and money constantly, despite the best efforts of the rest of the crew. Her antics (including blowing off scenes, racking up massive bills for liquor and sushi, and refusing to do some of the s*x scenes within the story) were reported by The New York Times, which didn’t help Lohan’s image at all. She belittled her co-stars and argued with the director constantly, helping turn the movie into a famous mess. Lohan’s career wasn’t salvaged.

8 Nicholas Cage – Ghost Rider

VIA: ScreenCrush

Method acting is an interesting acting style that demands the performer completely embrace the character they’re playing. They try to become them in a fundamental way, so as to better understand them. Some actors take a few levels too far, though, even when the movie isn’t all that impressive.

Take Nicholas Cage, who went nuts while becoming Ghost Rider.

The character’s flaming skull was going to be constructed completely in CGI, so Cage didn’t need to wear anything special. Despite that, he showed up in corpse paint and got VERY into character. Cage introduced it as Nouveau Shamanic, an ancient African acting style that turns out does not actually exist because he invented on the set. The rest of the crew ended up afraid of Cage, which makes a lot of sense. Cage later admitted his imaginary acting method was fake.

7 Shia LaBouef – Fury

VIA: CinemaBlend

In David Ayer’s Fury, Shia LaBouef plays the youngest member of a tank crew, who find themselves stuck in the European theater at the height of WWII. The rest of the cast was stacked (with Brad Pitt, Michael Pena, and Jon Bernthal playing some of his compatriots). In an attempt to try and truly embody the character, LaBouef kind of went overboard. The actor refused to bathe for four months while filming. To that same end, he proceeded to become his character by spending a month on an army base and spending entire days just watching horses to die for some strange reason. The final straw for the cast and crew came when he pulled a tooth out of his own skull, and slashed his face open with a knife. LaBouef spent the rest of the movie relegated to a separate hotel from everyone else, which was probably for the best.

6 Julia Roberts – Hook

VIA: Pinterest

It takes a lot to get on the nerves of the seemingly happy-go-lucky Steven Spielberg. Megan Fox managed it with some specific language she used against director Michael Bay. Julia Roberts managed to get him mad too, but not for her language. While filming Hook, Roberts was coming off an ugly break up with Kiefer Sutherland just days before they were set to be married. Roberts spent most of the movie production dealing with the aftermath of that, while also performing as Tinkerbell. It proved to be more difficult than they expected. She was reportedly incredibly difficult to work with, fluctuating between sullen and erratic. She was even nicknamed “Tinkerhell” by the rest of the crew due to her behavior. While she has denied these accusations, Spielberg has revealed in various interviews that the experience will keep him from ever casting her in another movie.

5 Jennifer Lopez – What to Expect When You’re Expecting

VIA: FanPop

For a solid chunk of time there, Jennifer Lopez was one of the biggest movie stars in the entire world. But she maybe kept that kind of standing a little too longer, if her behavior on the set of What to Expect When You’re Expecting wasn't apparently so atrocious. She reportedly refused to speak to any of her co-stars directly, instead talking to the cast and crew through a handler. She kept herself removed from the rest of the cast, even from the other major stars in the film. She had just gotten a divorce from Marc Anthony, which might explain some of her general annoyance and desire to keep to herself, but the fact that she brought on a straight up handler to talk to people instead of actually, you know, just talking to people says a lot about her standards when it comes acting in a major motion picture.

4 Vin Diesel/Dwayne Johnson – The Fate of the Furious

VIA: Vanity Fair

The behind the scenes drama of the Fast & the Furious films has been fascinating, turning out to be a lot more interesting than the actual movies. After the death of Paul Walker, Dwyane Johnson became a more and more important member of the overarching plot of the franchise.

While wrapping up the eighth film, Fate of the Furious, Johnson put out an Instagram post that called out some of his male co-workers.

It was revealed that he and Diesel were butting heads constantly on the set, with other actors taking sides (notably Tyrese Gibson, who sided with Diesel). The two were unable to put an end to their feud, especially when it was announced Johnson was looking to star in a spin-off to the film alongside Jason Statham. By the way, Tyrese wasn't happy about that spin-off either, resulting in a feud between himself and Johnson.

3 Edward Norton – American History X

VIA: Groucho Reviews

Edward Norton has always been a controlling performer. The stories about his fights with directors over the movie they’re making have become famous in the film industry. But the incident that really cemented his "difficult" image came during an ugly moment between him and American History X director Tony Kaye. After turning in a second cut of the film, Kaye was surprised to find out that Edward Norton was being given a chance to submit his own edits of the movie. A fight between the star and his director over the ending turned into a major point contention for the two men. The fight quickly got ugly, even as the edit released (Norton’s) gained massive critical acclaim. The two never stopped fighting over it, and Kaye even tried to have his name taken off the movie's credits.

2 Tippi Hedren – The Birds

VIA: Youtube

Alfred Hitchock is, no way about it, one of the most important filmmakers of all time. His work (including classics like Psycho and Rear Window) are influential on a fundamental level at this point. He was also sort of a terrible person sometimes, who didn’t care about the feelings or safety of his actors in the slightest. One of his biggest movies was The Birds, a movie where birds just suddenly turn on people. It's not his best work and may be one of the worst set experiences for any of his actresses. The film starred Tippi Hedren and for scenes in the movie where she had to be attacked by the aforementioned evil birds, the crew threw angry birds at her head. The tactic worked at the very least, terrifying Hedren into a convincing performance. But Hedren was left shaken, having breakdowns on set for the rest of filming. She had nightmares about flapping wings and sharp beaks after the event, and went through a real emotional meltdown. All for a movie about evil birds.

1 Bruce Willis – Cop Out

VIA: Giphy

Kevin Smith has become something of a geek icon since he first rose to prominence with Clerks. And in that time, he’s been an incredibly open celebrity with his fans. He’s gone into vivid detail about every aspect of his professional work, and that doesn’t just mean flattering stories.

He’s gone after bigger names with a harsh voice, and the one that probably comes off the worst was Bruce Willis.

In an interview, Smith called his experience with Willis soul-crushing. The action star was apparently confrontational and short-tempered with the director, openly making jokes about him to the rest of the crew. It was incredibly disheartening for Smith, who before that had expressed a genuine excitement at the prospect of working with Willis after the two seemed to get along during Live Free or Die Hard. Cop Out as a whole is better left forgotten.
