Disney has produced some of the most fantastical entertainment to be placed on any television medium. Our childhoods would have never been the same if it were not for television channels such as ToonDisney, DisneyChannel or ABCFamily. The cartoons and sitcoms that ran on these channels kept us on our feet and have inspired thousands of people to do some fairly prodigious things. These dramas have also been known to produce some of the most-talked about stars in the industry we have today.

We idolize a lot of these actors and actresses because they came up from little innocent Disney and were literally on all of our TV screens, T-shirts and lunch boxes. They must have had the time of their lives, right? We say this because Disney is made out to be so magical, but it is not the case. There are several scandals and mental breaks that have plagued the world of Disney and the people going through the trauma were usually these young stars that we adored with all of our hearts. So, if you want the scoop on this Disney drama, keep reading because we have a list of 15 Disney actors who have had to go through these situations.

15 Hilary Duff was never good enough

Hilary Duff is that sweetheart we all know and love from that kooky little show Lizzie McGuire and she also starred in the Disney film Cadet Kelly. Duff has explained how she is extremely thankful for Disney studios helping her become as successful as she is, but she has also mentioned on occasion how working with this studio has caused her to lose her personality at times. She says that Disney placed unrealistic expectations on them as pubescent teen actors that she felt tortured them at times during filming.

Duff has also told several sources that one of the hardest parts about working for Disney was that it felt almost impossible for people to recognize her as anything besides Lizzie McGuire. She’s had to distance herself from that character, but she says it doesn’t annoy her anymore to be called “Lizzie.”

14 Demi Lovato isn't sorry

Demi Lovato is one the hugest rising stars in the pop music industry at the moment with hit songs such as “Neon Lights,” “I Really Don’t Care,” and “Sorry Not Sorry.” She starred in Disney’s Sonny with a Chance, Princess Protection Program and Camp Rock. The latter film was Lovato's breakout role and led her to stardom, but Disney still wasn’t making her happy.

Lovato revealed that she had felt bullied by Disney in a way because they were pressuring her so much into being that picture-perfect innocent girl. They tried to make her lose weight and they even requested she remove the gap from her teeth. Disney is most likely one of the things that triggered Lovato's battle with depression, which led to her drug use. She’s happy and sober now, though.

13 Miley Cyrus: Disney's biggest train wreck

Hands down, Miley Cyrus is the most controversial person to have ever been brought up through Disney. She’s best known for swinging completely bare-skinned on a wrecking ball and playing on the hit show Hannah Montana. Body issues became a serious problem for Cyrus while she was working for Disney.

She said her experience was akin Toddlers in Tiaras because they were forcing her to change her hair, dress in constant pop star style clothing and she was even forced to wear a flipper—a set of fake teeth that is placed over your real ones. If it weren’t hard enough for her already, she was having to go through puberty this whole time with the public eye on her constantly. She managed to escape from Disney and is now giving them the biggest middle finger she possibly can.

12 Joe Jonas couldn't fail

The heartthrob who was one of the faces of The Jonas Brothers and star of Camp Rock, did not have the most fantastic experience with Disney either. He said that his brothers and he assumed Disney was going to be their only shot at success. So, they stayed, despite the mounting pressure.

They were starting out in Disney around the same time Vanessa Hudgens went through that scandal we all know about. Jonas said he could overhear executives talking about the situation all the time and that they would tell them they were proud of the boys for not making such mistakes.

By hearing that, he thought he had to be as perfect as possible to stay with Disney so certain pressures were set in place for them that no teenager should have to go through. Everybody makes mistakes and it’s human.

11 Kelli Berglund didn't measure up

Berglund played the part of the bionic teenager known as Bree Davenport in Disney Channel’s Lab Rats. She says she feels very lucky to have been able to take part in working with the show, but it was not the easiest time of her life. Berglund told Lapalme Magazine, "Being a teenager and growing up can already be tough enough as it is.

Try having your awkward years put in front of a spotlight for the whole world to see. The biggest pressure probably comes from trying my absolute best to please everyone while still trying to figure out exactly who I am." She felt like it was impossible to meet the standards that she was given. It seems like there may be a pattern for Disney stars feeling like they’ve been compressed into these perfect molds.

10 Bella Thorne's family struggles

Also known as Cece Jones from the Disney Channel series Shake It Up, Thorne was one of Disney’s breakout stars at the time of the show’s release. You know, Thorne had not even dreamed of becoming an actress. She couldn’t even dance!

The only reason she auditioned for the show was because her family was going through a rough spot. She said if she did not get the part, her family would have been on the streets and living off Stouffer’s coupons.

The strain of getting the part was already intense, so imagine stressing out about giving 100 percent and then adding on all of the expectations that Disney has to that. It doesn’t seem like a very painless task.

9 Nick Jonas: hot mess express

Two words–purity ring. Jonas is now known for his amazing pop music and his chiseled abs, but before all of that, he was the youngest of the Disney group known as The Jonas Brothers. Jonas says that Disney–and the church he grew up in–got the group to wear purity rings without them even really knowing what the symbolism of the rings were.

This goes along with the idea of Disney forcing their stars to look like perfect angels. Jonas also said there was a lot of drama behind the scenes at Disney because the whole crew was basically teenagers—and they were all dating each other. Don’t you think it may have been tough to be picture perfect when you’re dating your co-stars and working with them constantly?

8 Stefanie Scott: stifled

This little Disney actress was not very fond of the character she was cast as in A.N.T Farm. One of the most important things to have a successful career and to be happy is to be able express yourself.

Well, with Disney, Scott disclosed that she had no power of expression. They would not acknowledge her creative ideas and on top of that, she was basically advertising certain situations and things she did not believe in—portraying young blondes to be popular little dolls when a cute blonde can be just as smart and dorky as the other girls. Scott wishes that she could have had more freedom to express her emotions through her work.

7 Selena Gomez, diva

Gomez describes her experience at Disney as “Going to the biggest High School in the world.” We all know her from Wizards of Waverly Place and some of us may still watch the show as a guilty pleasure…witchcraft is cool, right?! Anyway, Gomez says she felt like she started to fancy the attention she got from Disney and it may have turned her into a bit of a diva at times.

She said it felt defective to be on television at such a young age because she was still trying to find out who she was–and emotions kept taking over. Her feelings were hurt on several occasions while working for Disney and it really took a toll on her confidence.

6 Shia Labeouf: pushed around

“JUST DO IT!” are the words we think of now when talking about Shia Labeouf. This actor has changed a lot since his time on Disney Channel, playing on Even Stevens. He said he knew Disney was a machine when he had started and he had witnessed several stars being forced to become something they were not.

He really was not keen on that idea. Labeouf is not a singer or dancer and did not want to become one by any means, but Disney tried to compel him to do so. He kept getting pushed by Disney to try music and he just kept going a different direction with what he wanted to do. Disney needs to chill a little bit.

5 Raven Symoné was never going to be perfect

Raven Symoné—whose last name is actually pronounced “Symone-yay”—is probably one of the most known faces from the Disney Channel scene because of her portrayal in the series That’s So Raven and for her role in the hit Disney original film The Cheetah Girls. Symoné struggled excessively with body image issues during her Disney career.

The executives constantly tried to get her to lose weight and they also tried to get her to change her skin tone. They made Symoné go tanning quite often so she would seem darker/more appealing to the black viewers. Dark skin isn’t what it is all about, though. She knew that, so she took her passion elsewhere. She recently returned for a reboot of her hit series, this one entitled Raven's Home, but we're betting she's not letting Disney push her around this time.

4 Raini Rodriguez gets the last laugh

The funny lady from the musical show Austin & Ally did not seem to have the best experience while working for Disney as well. Her weight led to a lot of bullying during and after filming. A lot of this bullying was done by fans of the show and also by people she knew back home.

She was told that she was not funny. She was called fat. It just really hurt her self-esteem and it wasn’t fair. She knows now how humorous and talented she is and is expressing herself more and more. She claims that all of her success is thanks to her hard work—which we agree with—and she is going to continue doing so.

3 Mitchel Musso strikes back

This cool guy played the snazzy character known as Oliver from Hannah Montana and he also co-starred on a tropical Disney show called Pair of Kings. Musso feels like Disney placed him in a box and he was expected to become this hip Disney pop star–kind of like what they were trying to do to LaBeouf.

Self-expression wasn’t much of an option for Musso and the wardrobe team kept putting him in embarrassing clothing. After Hannah Montana was done filming and he was just working as a voice actor for Phineas and Ferb, he showed up at Disney with his hair dyed black and earrings. Despite the fact that he wasn't on camera, the executives were still annoyed.

2 Zendaya wasn't comfy

This beautiful cover girl, who has the most beautiful eyebrows on earth and a wardrobe for the gods, got her start on the hit series Shake It Up. Her experience was not as traumatic as some of the other actors, but she still didn’t enjoy a lot of her time on set. Apparently, the Disney executives were putting Zendaya and her co-star we spoke of above—Bella Thorne—in an uncomfortable position where they had to compete with each other.

Both of the stars had huge egos once they began filming and their personalities just clashed. Having to work with someone you are not comfortable with can be a struggle on its own. They pretended to be best friends on the screen, but behind the scenes was awkward for the both of them.

1 Vanessa Hudgens: blacklisted

She was the adorable Starlet who played our favorite “new girl in school.” Gabriella from High School Musical was an iconic Disney Channel original movie role and we would be lying if we didn’t say we were a fan. Hudgens’ career was taking off after the film series, but Disney decided to drop her—and basically ruin her life/reputation for a bit—because she made one silly mistake. She was a young woman who had her nude photos leaked.

Everyone makes mistakes and it should not be shunned for an adult to be doing adult things. The leak was not intentional and it’s something we’re sure she wants to forgot. Do you think a little hiccup like a nude leak should have costed Hudgens her entire Disney career? It seems a little harsh.
