Being an actor is an illustrious career. It can come with fame and fortune and provide opportunities that wouldn't have come about without supportive fans and massive popularity. That being said, acting is not the only way to get your name out there. It could be a side gig such as hosting; the likes of Nick Canon, Jeff Probst and Steve Harvey have fallen into this gem of a job. There are also side gigs in reality television when the acting well dries up. Or turning to the ever reliable shopping channel or QVC to sell questionable products. However, there is also the art of being a media maven; being in the news for trouble with the law or having a crappy attitude on set or even for noble humanitarian work. Acting is only the profession, there are many avenues in which that profession can be expressed. While the actors on this list are rather popular, they are also known for hustling other gigs besides acting.
15 James Franco
James Franco has mastered the side hustle and prides himself on working magic behind the big screen as a writer and producer. However, he also has way more going on than a few films under his belt. Franco is not only a social media professional he is also a university professor. Yes, you read that correctly. Franco had an ongoing class at New York University, he was responsible for shaping young minds. He is not just a pretty face anymore. In fact, it's safe to say he is not just an actor, he is a professor, a teacher, a lecturer; he clearly can do no wrong. It's so important to have an actor so open about how much they love education. In addition to educating others he regularly takes courses to shape his own mind. Franco seems to have seen beyond the glitz of Hollywood, instead of being photographed on Rodeo he is photographed passed out in a lecture like a true University student.
14 Shia Labeouf
Oh sweet, sweet, misguided Shia Labeouf. He is so complex and so mysterious. There is something going on behind those deep-set eyes. He stands up for what he believes in and is not afraid to get into physical fights to defend the salacious comments that so routinely run off his tongue. Have you noticed yet? That’s right no mention of his acting. Simply because he always seems to have so much going on besides focusing on his career. The countless bar fights, the silent protests against Trump, the paper bag incident. There are just so many other incidents that can be listed before we get anywhere near his film credits. Labeouf has made no secret of his love/hate relationship with his career so truth be told, he's probably happy that people do not automatically think of him as an actor when they see him.
13 Charlie Sheen
There is no denying that actor Charlie Sheen has held some incredible titles underneath that loose belt of his. However, we should all be realistic and acknowledge that all the films credits in the world could never overshadow his insanely entertaining off screen moments. Sheen has never been one to shy away from drama especially within the last few years. With escapades such as; climbing to the top of the Live Nation building only to wield around a machete and drink some made up concoction that he personally named “tiger blood”. All the way to his three’s company style of living with a bunch of female adult entertainers including the now famous Bree Olson. Who has the time to keep up with his acting credits when he clearly has a more entertaining personal life?
12 Angelina Jolie
Angelina Jolie is literally a living saint. In addition to her numerously successful acting credits, Jolie is a mom of 6 kids, 3 of which are adopted. Unfortunately for her, the acting sometimes get pushed into the shadows and replaced by that scandal with Brad Pitt. More recently, Jolie has been killing it as a UN ambassador and an advocate for children in need. Too bad all people can talk about is the deterioration of her once seemingly blissful marriage with Pitt. This scandal that is currently following Jolie seems to have made everyone forget about all her awesome acting roles and her work for the less fortunate. What is it they say about press? No press is bad press, it looks like all those publicists might be wrong.
11 Lindsay Lohan
Lindsay Lohan was once an actress at the top of her game. Almost everything she touched turned to gold. She was the face of Disney and everyone’s golden child. However, fame is difficult to handle when you transition from child actor to adult. Lohan was not only a wild child she was THE wild child. Soon enough people forgot that she starred in a successful remake of The Parent Trap or they think back wistfully at the time Lohan was at the head of the cult classic Mean Girls. All they could see was Lohan partying it up and falling off the wagon in a very real and publicized way. When was the last time you associated Lohan with being an actress? Even her last television appearance, a reality show called Lindsay did little to harken to the good old days.
10 Jessica Biel
Actress Jessica Biel was well on her way to stardom when she made her first big television appearance on 7th Heaven. Knowing she was destined for more she managed to get kicked off the exceedingly popular show. Afterwards, she acted in a string of not-so-great films; fast forward to today, she is married to one of the biggest pop stars of our time, Justin Timberlake. Which begs the question; who is Jessica Biel now? Oh that’s right Justin Timberlake’s wife. While Biel has hung on to an acting career she is clearly not known for her acting anymore. However, truth be told, it is not horrible being known as Justin Timberlake’s wife and baby mama. Who would have thought she would be the one to get the pop sensation to settle into wedded bliss.
9 Leah Remini
Leah Remini is a woman who needs no introduction. There is no doubt that she has had a decent acting career but let’s all be real at this point; she is now known as the most vocal ex-scientologist ever. She has developed a new career for herself as an advocate for people who have been screwed over by scientology (even if they don’t want to admit it). Remini was never one to shy away from the glitz and lights of Hollywood, only now she is using whatever star power she has left to help fellow ex-scientologist transition to the real world and shine a tiny light on some of the shady dealings that happen behind the churches closed doors. Remini is now making her rounds through some of the popular reality TV shows including her own. Wonder where she will end up next.
8 Channing Tatum
Channing Tatum has held his own out there as an actor, appearing in a number of highly successful films despite staunch criticism. What his fans love most about him though is his ripped physique and amazing dancing skills. Besides a short stint as an exotic dancer, Tatum and his wife slay social media and make everyone coo and aww at their perfect relationship and adorable kid. He has so much more going on behind the scenes than we realise. One of his main goals is to produce or help produce all of the films he acts in and he's set to coproduce and star in the all male reboot of Ghostbusters that's currently in the works.
7 Paula Patton
Paula Patton’s career has recently been through a rough patch. She is mostly known for her role in the 2005 comedy Hitch and as Robin Thicke's long time wife and partner. They broke it off in 2014 after 21 years together and since then the media hasn't let go, reporting extensively on her personal life. She has a lot going on and unfortunately her personal life has overshadowed basically every good thing she has done professionally. What is the last film credit you can name? Far from discrediting what Patton has achieved, we want to highlight the fact that the media often shapes the narrative we receive about certain stars. Here's to hoping that Patton shakes the negative media so she can focus on other things!
6 Megan Fox
Megan Fox has had an interesting career. Her most memorable credit to date is probably the Transformer films. It appears as though people are more obsessed with her ever-changing face and her relationship with 90’s bad boy Brian Austin Green. Don’t count her out yet though, Fox has also had some pretty risky spreads in a few magazines that make people forget what she was originally known for. If anything, we are jealous of Fox. She seems to have hit the lottery; gorgeous kids, a cute husband, and a bunch of money all she had to do was pose a couple of times for Cosmo, GQ and Women’s health all while denying any plastic surgery. Unfortunately, we can’t hate the player, right?
5 Ashton Kutcher
Actor Ashton Kutcher is much more than an actor, he is a producer, writer, father, husband, and humanitarian. Kutcher may have left acting in the past since as of today he is more known for lending his celebrity status to causes like stopping human trafficking. He also lends a hand to a sister charity that helps to rehabilitate women and children who have fought their way out of the sex trade. Altogether, Kutcher is involved with 19 charities and spends a majority of his time using his status to help those less fortunate. So, yea, he played Steve Jobs in a pretty popular film but honestly at this point how can that outshine the commendable work he does off screen. The excitement that he and wife Mila Kunis create when seen in public together is enough to prove that they will forever have celebrity status acting or not acting.
4 Gwyneth Paltrow
There are several reasons why former actress Gwyneth Paltrow is on this list; her last popular acting credit was in 2014 when she concluded her appearance on Glee. However, besides stating the obvious, Paltrow has had a few run-ins with the media that has made a lot of her loyal fans question what is going on in her head. One of the more popular incidents was when she decided to “consciously uncouple” from ex-husband Chris martin. It is comments like that, that make people forget she is an actress and focus on her personal life. Not to mention GOOP and the extravagant recipes that no one can recreate without having to sell an arm, a leg and maybe a kidney. Her lifestyle website has so much buzz around it that she may as well retire from acting and call it a day.
3 Pamela Anderson
Pamela Anderson an actress? no way. Playboy Vixen, check; professional appearance maker; check. Anderson is mostly known for Baywatch but not much else. She loves to refer to herself as an actress though and we won't ding her for that one. Truthfully, when we think of Anderson we think of Playboy and the record number of times she has been on a cover or a centerfold. Kudos to her, she reached reality star status before being a reality star was even a thing. We can say she is known for being ahead of the masses.
2 Katherine Heigl
Grey’s Anatomy, Knocked Up, 27 Dresses these are just a few of the great film credits Heigl has to her name. She's known as someone who is rather outspoken, like the time she bashed the hit film Knocked Up because of its sexist and one dimensional depiction of women, or the time she made a big deal about wanting to leave Grey’s Anatomy because she felt as though she could do better (go girl, don't settle for anyone or anything). On the other hand Heigl has had several negative interactions with writers, directors and producers and unfortunately for her they were highly publicized, giving her the reputation of an actress who is hard to work with.
1 Emma Watson
Emma Watson is much more than an actress. She is a feminist, an advocate and a humanitarian. Of course, when we think of her we will always remember the Harry Potter series simply because it was how we were introduced to her. Nevertheless, she has surpassed the status of actress. She has managed to do some noble things that has distinguished her from her career, it is almost as if she is two people. As a UN ambassador and a self-proclaimed feminist, she could have a whole other career in politics and advocacy. In the same breath, she can turn around and continue making us love her with films like Perks of Being a Wallflower and of course the upcoming Beauty and the Beast.
