The airport runway represents safety. It represents home. It lets a person know that their travels, their long journey is over, at least for some time. And there are many around the world, so designed to be able to allow many planes and many travelers to touch down for the night or day, whatever time they should be arriving to their respective destinations.
But there are many that have been abandoned, the upkeep and the establishment that they represent abandoned long ago. It is at these locations that nature has nestled into the fabric of what these airports and air strips once were. And it is also in these photos that the abandonment, the desolation and the sheer power of Mother Nature chills us to our core.
Maybe then again, it's the abandonment of a place that at one time held a sense of safety, a beacon in the dark for weary travelers. Regardless, join us as we take a look at some of these abandoned air strips.
15 ODDLY PLACED STONES
If there was anything we learned from The Blair Witch series of films, we should definitely be afraid and weary of oddly shaped stones and sticks; especially when we can`t be clear as to who did the arranging in the first place. Here at this particular airport, the stones along the runway seem to have a certain pattern that`s rather repetitive and unsettling.
14 THE BROODS THAT POPULATE THE AREAS
When you're a kid growing up, you seem to find the need to travel in packs; just like the wolves and coyotes that run along the freeways in certain parts of the globe, young teens seem to do well in large numbers, for the most part. And their haunts are usually fields and abandoned places where they can rest assured that they are far away from the prying eyes of adults.
13 JUST A MATTER OF TIME
Specifically in third world countries, airports don't look like the ones we are used to. They're pretty much often overrun by animals and yes, vegetation. But should these airstrips be abandoned completely, it wouldn't take long for the air strips to resemble the rest of the land that surrounds it, welcoming animals of all sorts.
12 A BIT OF FUN FOR WEARY ADVENTURERS
To say that abandoned locations like these are the perfect spot for that photo opportunity would be an understatement for sure. At such locations, there are plenty of options. Just take these two who stumbled across an abandoned air strip. They were also lucky enough to find an abandoned plane. That picture sure must have gotten a few ‘Likes’ on Social Media.
11 NATURE AND THE ELEMENTS
Vegetation and the arrival of many animals is definitely something to expect, but the erosion of the man-made portions of the abandoned air strips around the world is also to be expected. The things of which are man-made aren’t meant to last, as the elements surrounding these locations so deftly prove. Acts of nature like storms and hurricanes can also be a factor.
10 ILLUSIONS AMIDST THE DECAY
Sometimes these locations aren’t affected all that much by the abandonment they've been subject to. Maybe there is a bit of grass and weeds growing on the runway. Perhaps there are a few visitors in the form of animals. But those planes that have been left to sit and wait as time ticks by still look like they can fly up high with the best of them. Reality, or just an illusion?
9 OMINOUS TRACKS
And ominous as well are the many tracks that we can see atop the ground when we come across abandoned locations such as these. For years, airplanes landed there, creating mini craters in the sand or turf of these strips, the maintenance crew steamrolling the sand back again and again, but it's been years since a plane has touched down here. If so … who do these tracks belong to?
8 HUSTLING AND BUSTLING
It’s been many years since these airports and runways were teaming with people trying to get from one destination to another. But these locations did in fact service many customers. With restaurants, parking garages as well, there certainly were many people that flooded the areas around these runways. If you look closely at this picture, you can almost see them. Go ahead … look closely.
7 LIKE THE ANCIENT RUINS
This is Ellinikon International Airport in Greece. Or rather, what's left of it. The gorgeous and historically rich country known as Greece has seen better days financially speaking, but it`s gallant people and rich culture is a prominent force in Europe and if for nothing else for its fight to survive amidst financial peril. The ruins of this airport and runway remind us of the country's history and place in our hearts.
6 A BLANK CANVAS
For many out there, an abandoned airport, airstrip, or any place that's been left to fend in the elements means more than just a creepy and unsettling location. It means that they've found a place to leave their mark. Many graffiti artists seek these places out and paint their murals or leave their names atop he abandoned buildings on and around these strips.
5 URBAN BLIGHT
Or if you rather prefer … urban decay. It's pretty much unavoidable. As certain cities move forward, there are sections of these cities that stay frozen in time and especially if they’re abandoned. Like this city that sits atop the hill here. They have this abandoned airstrip to look down on, and it definitely casts a shadow on the town itself. We’ll leave whether it’s negative or positive up to you, dear readers.
4 SO MUCH SPACE
There are some landing strips that are small, and all in all they're just a small fraction of a particular town, but there are so many more of these locations that are quite massive in scope. They take up a lot of space and they can get to be an eyesore for many. It takes certain cities a long time to get rid of what sits atop all that land.
3 A MAMMOTH BEAST JUST SITTING THERE
For some, the sight of an airplane left to sit there and waste away through the years is something unsettling in and of itself, let alone the abandoned runway. The airplane is a symbol of strength, power and the ability to soar through the air at unimaginable speeds. In certain respects, it’s the promise of revolution, the promise of science and technology. To see it lying dormant sends an interesting message.
2 DOES IT MAKE A SOUND?
Do you remember the old riddle: 'If a tree falls in the forest and there's no one around to hear it, does it make a sound?' Many have been creeped out by the prospect that that riddle poses and suggests. Here, we see a light pole downed by the elements and the question resurfaces, as the airstrip and the airport are clearly abandoned. We wonder if the pole made a sound amidst all that lonely earth and sand.
1 A BEACON OF LIGHT
The control tower was the only communication for pilots all over the world. Even today, the air-traffic controller is the one person that has the fate of all passengers and pilots in the palm of his or her hands. The tower where he or she arranged flights is his tower of solitude. To see the view of the abandoned runway through the windows of this tower is the perfect way to end this piece. A picture worth a thousand words after all.
