Let's be real. As much as we all loved the Hunger Games series, it was pretty messed up. Kids were forced to kill other kids, several of our favorite characters were brutally murdered or had to witness the deaths of their loved ones and there was barely a happy ending for anyone. However, all that darkness hasn't stopped die-hard fans of the books and films from incorporating a bit of humor into the franchise through some seriously funny memes! They say that laughter is the best medicine, and since The Hunger Games left us with some serious feels, we could all use some of these memes to make us forget that Rue, Finnick and several of our other faves didn't survive the series.
15 Not the safest fictional world
Harry Potter fans had to see several of their favorite characters die within the grounds of Hogwarts castle, but let's be real...we Potterheads all would still totally be down to enroll to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft & Wizardry. Same goes for Chronicles of Narnia fans wanting to journey to the magical world of Narnia. Hunger Games fans? Not so much. There's pretty much no reason to want to go to Panem, even if you were able to live at the Capitol instead of one of the Districts where you'd have to worry about yourself or your loved ones being selected to fight to the death. Capitol people wear some seriously bizarre clothes, purposely drink liquids that make them throw up and are expected to celebrate as they watch kids murdering kids. Suzanne Collins did a great job creating a very interesting dystopian world, but we have no desire to experience it first-hand.
14 Jennifer is no Katniss Everdeen IRL
Jennifer Lawrence made for the perfect Katniss Everdeen on screen. She perfectly captured the Girl on Fire's rebelliousness, her indecisiveness over whether she should be with Peeta or Gale, her struggles to be the leader the resistance needed her to be...we can safely say there isn't another actress in Hollywood who could have done a better job bringing Katniss to life than J.Law. That being said, Jennifer Lawrence is no Katniss in real life. She's hilarious, personable and a total klutz! She can frequently be seen stumbling around on the red carpet or accidentally letting a few swears slip in interviews, and who can forget when she won an Oscar and tripped up the stairs to on the way to receive her award?! Not exactly Mockingjay material.
13 Katniss, you dirty liar!
In the novel, Katniss received her infamous Mockingjay pin from her best female friend, Madge Undersee, so it could be the token from home she could take into the Hunger Games arena to remember where she came from. In the movie, however, Katniss found the Mockingjay pin in her District's underground marketplace, and gave it to her little sister for good luck at her first Reaping. Prim was then immediately selected as District 11's female Tribute. Um, WTF, Katniss?! Luckily for Prim, Katniss volunteered to take her place, but Prim seemingly still wanted revenge and gave that seemingly cursed pin right back to her sister. She tried to play it off like she really wanted Katniss to still view the pin as a good luck charm like she had initially stated, but that token brought nothing but pain and misery to its wearer for four films!
12 Hunger Games meets Mean Girls
Only one thing can make The Hunger Games better, and that's mashing it up with a movie we love just as much—Mean Girls! In this hilarious meme, Katniss Everdeen is the Regina George to President Snow's Janis Ian. It's a pretty spot-on comparison, if you think about it. Just like Regina ruined Janis' life and turned the whole school against her, Katniss spent three books and four movies taking everything away from President Snow and led the rebellion against the Capitol. Snow was the villain of the Hunger Games series, but this kind of makes us crave a film or book from his sassy and twisted perspective, where Katniss is out to ruin his favorite reality show and take away his title of Queen Bee.
11 THAT'S MAHOGANY!
Elizabeth Banks totally made up Effie Trinket's classic "That is mahogany!" exclamation when Katniss stabbed a valuable Capital-owned table, and for whatever reason (our guess is Elizabeth Banks' perfectly hysterical delivery), fans decided it was one of their favorite lines of the entire series. The writers noticed the fandom's sudden love for mahogany online, and included a reference to the type of wood in the second film as a joke, which only made things even crazier and led to the creation of this brilliant meme. Someone changed "one does not simply walk into Mordor" from Lord of the Rings to "one does not simply touch mahogany." Funny AF, but more proof that Hunger Games fans are able to obsess over virtually anything related to their favorite franchise.
10 The new President Snow
There are countless viral memes and tweets which claim that the election of Donald Trump will lead to the creation of a real-life Hunger Games in a few years, saying that the former Celebrity Apprentice star is the closest thing politics has ever seen to President Snow. With huge protests come from both lovers and haters of the controversial president, it's kind of hard to disagree. This meme perfectly captures what it must have been like to see President Snow's rise to power in Panem. People had to have elected him hoping he'd bring about positive change, then watched in disbelief as he became more and more power-hungry and started sacrificing innocent children so he could rule through fear. Where's our real-life Katniss?!
9 The eternal OTP name debate
One debate can always led to arena-level fights among fans of The Hunger Games: What is the ship name for Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark?! Katniss and Gale is always Kale, Finnick and Annie is universally called Fannie, but should the pairing of Katniss and Peeta be Keeta or...Peeniss? Leonardo DiCaprio's "are you being serious right now?!" Inception face perfectly captures how we all felt when Hunger Games fans started proudly proclaiming that they "love Peeniss." There's obvious reasons why that OTP name is disliked by a lot of fans of the duo, but considering how hot and heavy the couple can be one day and how soft and distant they can be the next, it kind of works in a unique way.
8 Peeta is tired of your lame bread puns
When you saw this picture, you might have instantly thought of the "paint me like one of your French breads" Titanic-Hunger Games memes, right? Someone changed things up and put a funny twist on that very popular meme. Peeta Mellark is sick and tired of being the bundt (get it) of all of your bread puns—it's bad enough that he's the son of a baker and is named after Pita bread. So if you make one more bread joke at his expense, you're toast. Shoot, we knead to stop doughing that! It's a comfort to know that Josh Hutcherson can't stop himself from making bread jokes at Peeta's expense either; in an interview, he said that he thinks his character had a sister named Rye and a brother named Whole Wheat.
7 Alternate Tangled ending
Mother Gothel had some major difficulties keeping Rapunzel locked away in her towel in Tangled, and this artist figured out how all of her problems could have been solved. Rapunzel had no way of distinguishing between fiction and non-fiction, and if Gothel just gave her The Hunger Games and said it was a true story, she'd have access to her adopted daughter's magical Fountain of Youth hair forever! Who would want to go out in a world where kids Rapunzel's age have to fight each other to the death?! She's got some serious fighting skills when she's got a metal pan in her hand, but chances are, she wouldn't fare quite as well in the arena as Katniss did...especially if she had to drag her crazy long hair around everywhere she went!
6 The Mockingjay salute
When you walk into an exam room before finals or your SATs, look around and you'll see that everyone is as nervous and mortified as Tributes heading into the arena to fight each other to the death. Regardless of how well you paid attention in class and studied your notes, final exams always scare the crap out of you, and the expressions on your peers' faces show that they all feel the same way. This meme gives you a hilarious way to show your fellow classmates that you're here for them—just give them the Hunger Games Mockingjay salute! If they're fans of the films like you are, they'll raise their three fingers in solidarity. If they're not, they'll get confused and distracted and maybe mess up the grading curve in your favor. It's a win-win.
5 The one thing all Harry Potter and Hunger Games fans have in common
Due to the similar popularity of the Harry Potter and Hunger Games book and film franchises, fans of the two series frequently butt heads online over which is better. There is one thing that they always agree on, however—both series are way better than the Twilight series! Harry Potter led a rebellion against Lord Voldemort, and had to conquer death on a number of occasions in his attempts to protect the loved ones that weren't brutally killed during his time at Hogwarts. Katniss Everdeen took down the Capitol as the Mockingjay, and lost several of her loved ones in her struggle to bring about change. Bella Swan just whined non-stop! She never really had a villain she had to personally take down, the Volturi left her family alone after several books of buildup to what should have been an epic battle, and she got to have a happily ever after without really losing anyone.
4 Talk about biding your time...
Peeta Mellark had a thing for Katniss Everdeen pretty much his whole life, and once even took a beating from his mother just so he could give his starving crush a loaf of soggy, burnt bread. Yet somehow, despite being in a reasonably small District where everyone knew each other, he managed to go through school with Katniss without ever talking to her. His first real conversation with the love of his life didn't take place until the two of them were selected to enter an arena where only one of them could leave alive. There's "playing the long game," and there's just having virtually no game. Readers and viewers all totally fell for Peeta, but that boy was awful with the ladies. He should thank President Snow for throwing him in the Games and forcing him to actually talk to Katniss, otherwise he may have died alone.
3 You probably could have seen that coming, Snow
President Snow wanted to make sure the people of the Districts would be too afraid of him to ever try to challenge his rule, so he came up with the Hunger Games to keep everyone in line. Sure, everyone was terrified of being chosen or having their loved ones be chosen for the Games...but everyone was also super pissed that a kid from their District died for Snow's entertainment each year. Duh, how could they not be?! Fear is a strong emotion, but it's not as strong as the rage and pain you feel when you have to watch someone you care about get murdered on national television. Katniss helped lead the rebellion against him, but the rebellion was probably inevitable with or without the Mockingjay.
2 Ridiculously photogenic Tribute
Remember the "Ridiculously Photogenic" marathon runner who went viral a few years ago for looking impossibly handsome despite having just run several miles? Well, this meme creator certainly does, and has a theory that if he were chosen to be District 11's male tribute during the Reaping Ceremony, Peeta Mellark's brothers would have stepped up to take his place. We don't know much about Peeta's older siblings, other than the fact that they had a chance to be good brothers and take his place the way Katniss took Prim's place, but were chill letting Peeta die. So it's definitely an extra slap in the face that they'd volunteer to save this dude instead of him. Whatever, Ridiculously Photogenic Guy is a babe, who could blame them?
1 It's a bloodbath out there!
Hopefully none of us will ever have to experience a Hunger Games in real life, but being at a Walmart on Black Friday is eerily similar to being in the arena with blood-thirsty tributes. Everyone's fights over the last discounted television or laptop like their life depends on it, and people have literally died in the stampede to get into the store. Someone dressed as Effie Trinket should totally stand outside of major retail stores when doorbusters first start on Black Friday morning, to greet them with her ever-inspirational "may the odds be ever in your favor" catchphrase. It's a good thing you're not allowed to bring weapons into Walmart or Target, because otherwise, it'd look like the tributes fighting over the Cornucopia every year!
