After 12 seasons and counting, there have been plenty of twists and turns on the CW’s hit television show Supernatural. From discovering that the Yellow-Eyed Demon Azazel was building an army of “special” children to Sam and Dean Winchester being fated to be the vessels of Lucifer and Michael, the show’s shocking plots have often left viewers screeching at their televisions in shock.

Since the show has been around for so long, Supernatural has developed a rich mythology and a great cast of characters that have provided die-hard fans with enough material to concoct some truly fascinating fan theories that range from whimsical good fun to a serious musing on how the series finale will end.

The following 15 Supernatural fan theories will make any fan think, “Huh, maybe that will be a plot point in an upcoming episode.”

15 Dean Winchester Will Finally Get A Chance To Use The Launcher

Via: Supernaturalwiki.com

Tasty_James noted that “Supernatural season 12 is the first time that we've ever seen the Grenade Launcher being actually referenced, despite promo shots from season 11 of Dean wielding it that never made it into the show. In the new season, we've had several references to the grenade launcher, and they could be drawing our attention to it now so they can whip it out during the finale for the first time in the show's history.”

Personally, I love the idea of Dean using the grenade launcher in an epic showdown that takes place during the Supernatural season 12 finale. Not only would that be a nice callback to the season 11 promotional photos, but it would be a great way for the season to end with a bang—quite literally.

14 Everything Past Season Three Was All Just A Dream

Via: Out-in-the-open.tumblr.com

After Korvamoj re-watched the third episode of Supernatural season three, they had a relevation and started wondering “What if Sam and Dean never actually woke up from their sleep and everything from that moment and on is just the makings of Dean and Sam’s extremely vivid imagination?”

Personally, I feel that this theory is a long shot, and quite a long period of time has passed by now, so I don’t think the Supernatural writers would do something like that. If they did, it would probably make a lot of their viewers angry, which could lead to a dip in the ratings. Nonetheless, it’s a really interesting theory and it would make a great episode. Perhaps Sam and Dean get hit with a spell or something by a witch and they start questioning their reality until it is broken.

13 Destiel Lives

Via: Tumblr

Sher-Lockian thinks that Dean and Castiel are already dating, but "it is a secret from the viewers cause it’s a secret from everyone else. What if it’s like those movies and television shows where the viewers thought that the main character was innocent, but little did they know that secretly they were evil and the police chasing after them were right.”

Honestly, if this is true and it gets revealed in Supernatural season 12, I think the Destiel shippers would be thrilled. It would definitely make for one heck of an interesting plot twist, and I would LOVE to know what Mary Winchester’s reaction would be when she found out that Dean’s boyfriend is a real, live angel. She’d probably giggle a bit at the irony that her son fell in love with a supernatural being.

12 The British Men Of Letters Are Trying To Cause Chaos In Hell

Via: That-was-not-supposed-to-happen.tumblr.com

DemonLordIncarnated pointed out that “We've seen Mary trying to steal the Colt for the British Men of Letters and that a Prince is personally taking an interest in Lucifer's child. Could it be the Prince of Hell is plotting to put Lucifer’s child on the throne of hell with the help of the British Men of Letters? As to why they would help out, it’s simple--one thing we can gather from Crowley's tedious meetings is that the amount of deals and the demonic hierarchy is more efficient and Hell is now a smooth havoc wrecking machine. The British Men of Letters could believe that by helping the Prince of Hell putting Lucifer's kid on the throne, they can cause mass chaos and dismantle it all, thus putting demonkind back several steps in terms of organization.”

I love this theory, and this would make a great plot twist for the season finale. I would love to see the look of shock on Sam and Dean’s faces when they find out that the British Men of Letters were helping a Prince of Hell.

11 Meg Is Actually Megara

Via: Kigozula.tumblr.com

SPNFamilyMeeting speculated that it would be a cool crossover if Meg from Supernatural was actually Megara from the Disney film Hercules. “Perhaps Megara sold her soul to save the man she loved. As we know from Supernatural, when you become a demon your soul is corrupted so Meg could be Megara after her soul was taken. And despite being a demon she still fell for Cas like Megara fell for Hercules.”

Okay, as someone who absolutely LOVED Hercules as a kid, this would seriously be such a bada** crossover. I could totally see Megara selling her soul in order to save Hercules, which would lead to her becoming the demon named Meg that appeared in Supernatural. Shame Disney would probably never allow this crossover to take place because it would be a cool twist.

10 The Ancient Gods Are Actually Tulpas

Via: Supernatural.wikia.com

Umdamdprcent has often wondered how the Pagan gods in Supernatural came to exist, and thinks that it is entirely possible that “they are a result of stored belief, kind of like the Hookman.”

The idea that the Pagan gods came into being in the Supernatural universe because people in the ancient world just kept believing in them and basically created tulpas (a concept that a being or an object can be created through the mind or spiritual belief of a human being) is a pretty cool one. It also is a bit of a nice nod to Neil Gaiman’s hit novel American Gods—in a way, the ancient gods that Shadow Moon meets were kind of tulpas, as they were “brought over” to America from their native land, and the “original” deity is still around in said native land.

9 The Archangel Michael Might Return In Season 12

Via: Fandomobssessed.tumblr.com

Binder673 pointed out that even though neither Sam nor Dean really talk about the fact that their half-brother Adam Milligan is in the cage as the Archangel Michael’s vessel, there’s a good chance that the archangel could return to the show since “other characters have been brought back at one point. Perhaps Michael will somehow get brought out of the cage and be the one to somehow reason with Lucifer when they finally have a chance to speak when it's not about the apocalypse.”

I would love to see Michael and Lucifer have a heart-to-heart in the show. It would also be really cool if Michael escapes from the cage and rescues Adam, but I’m sure that would depend on Jake Abel’s availability. If Michael and Adam do return either in season 12 or a future season, it would be a nice way to tie up a long-standing plot.

8 Amelia Was A Figment Of Sam's Imagination

Via: Sunflowerchester.tumblr.com

Supernatural fans swooned over Sam’s romance with Amelia, but Samstiels believes that she never existed because “there are way too many similarities between her and Sam for them to just be two people who met by accident. They both lost someone recently, they’re both running away and they both just happen to be staying at the same motel? Supposedly she was staying there because she worked at the nearby animal clinic, but not many places consider a motor inn a valid living address when you’re looking for employment. Sure, she probably could’ve gotten a job at a grocery store, but as a veterinarian? Not likely. Sam had a mental breakdown. There was no dog. There was no Amelia. It all happened in his head."

As much as I love the romance between Sam and Amelia, this theory is so heartbreaking that I think it would make a great plot twist if it was true.

7 Sam Never Tried To Resurrect Jessica Because He Still Felt Guilty

Via: Greeneyesandcherrypie.tumblr.com

Proserpina thinks that the reason why Sam has never tried to bring Jessica back to life after all these years is that “at first he probably didn't know it was an option. They were, after all, still small-time hunters and honestly the thought itself is somewhat abhorrent: meddling with life and death has always been something met with suspicion. The only reason Dean managed to bring Sam back that first time was because they knew about Crossroads Demons by then. Plus, she couldn't easily go back to her family - it had been too long. Not to mention Sam feels responsible for her death and probably wouldn't think he deserved to have her back.”

It would be great if the Supernatural writers explored the reason why Sam never tried to resurrect Jessica, and revealed that he still feels guilty over her death and doesn’t believe that he would deserve a second chance at happiness.

6 Lucifer's Child Could Reign In Both Heaven And Hell

Via: Supernatural.wikia.com

Astrxll has a feeling that “if Lucifer's child is born, he or she will try to rule both Heaven and Hell. After all, Lucifer’s child could have powers are greater than any angelic and demonic creations. Plus, it is the only motive and direction to move towards during season 12.”

This is a brilliant theory, and I could definitely see Lucifer’s child being a new threat towards the end of season 12—especially if he or she starts rapidly aging and becomes a young adult in a very short period of time. It would be even better if Lucifer is forced to team up with Sam, Dean and Castiel in order to prevent his child from taking over both Heaven and Hell. Now that would provide plenty of drama!

5 Eve Could Be A Hybrid Between A Leviathan And An Angel

Via: Turtlejustice.tumblr.com

Eagle56 theorized that “after God/Chuck created archangels and leviathans, he was then experimenting and trying to create something new, and ended up with Eve. What if she is a hybrid between a leviathan and an angel--or at the time, just a less powerful version of archangel. That could explain why she's so powerful and bleeds black blood. So at some point after God created her, he threw her in Purgatory for some reason. At some point in humanity's early years, some fool accidentally lets her out of Purgatory. Eve is mad at God for putting her in Purgatory, so she starts twisting human beings and creating monsters out of them.”

Supernatural never really explained the reason why Eve’s blood was black, and it makes sense that God was experimenting after he created two new species and wound up creating Eve.

4 The British Men Of Letters Are Going To Kill Lucifer's Child

Via: That-was-not-supposed-to-happen.tumblr.com

Xiilfox doesn’t think that Lucifer’s child is going to even be born at all, as “the British Men of Letters are going to hunt Kelly Kline down and ending the life of both mother and child without the Winchesters even knowing about it.”

As ruthless as it would be for the British Men of Letters to hunt down Kelly and kill both her and Lucifer’s unborn child, it does make sense that they would want to eradicate any creature that could potentially have the power to destroy the world. It would be interesting if Castiel discovered that the British Men of Letters killed Kelly, and had to tell the Winchesters what happened. I’m sure Sam and Dean would be relieved that they don’t have to worry about a possible anti-Christ, but saddened that Kelly was killed too.

3 Azazel Was A Nephilim And A Son Of Lucifer

Via: Irachio.tumblr.com

ViniPunk thinks that since Azazel “was not a corrupted soul, but a Nephilim soul who was killed by the Archangel Michael while trying to protect his father Lucifer. After he went to hell, Lucifer turned him into a demon and Prince of Hell, who was the heir to his father’s throne. Hence the unique abilities and unique eyes.”

I’ve never really thought about whether or not Azazel was a Nephilim child of Lucifer, but it does make a lot of sense. If Azazel really was Lucifer’s son, that would definitely explain why he wanted to create an army of “special” children and free the devil himself from his cage. It would also tie into the theme of families and loyalty between father and son that is so often repeated throughout Supernatural too.

2 Amara Created The Pagan Gods

Via: Nursenevan.tumblr.com

Kreignes thinks that it is possible that “Amara made the Pagan gods as a way to fight against God/Chuck and his angels, but the angels were just too strong. If Amara did create the Pagan gods, that would explain why they told Lucifer in the fifth season that they were around before he was. It is also important to remember that in season 11, the Winchesters found out that before God/Chuck made everything, there was the Darkness, and he fought Amara with the archangels. So it is possible that the Pagan gods were living in the Darkness before God/Chuck came.”

While I personally like the tulpa theory regarding the Pagan gods because it reminds me of American Gods, I won’t lie, I think this theory is interesting too. It has a nice symmetry to it—Chuck made the archangels, while Amara created the Pagan gods.

1 John Winchester Was Actually Possessed By The Archangel Michael

Via: Jdm-negan-mcnaughty.tumblr.com

WesleySays once heard an interesting fan theory at a convention which stated that “John Winchester was actually possessed by the archangel Michael because he had said yes when he was younger, and that is why he was so different with Adam Milligan—he was building Sam and Dean up to be their fated vessels.”

This is such a fascinating theory, and it’s something that could certainly happen since Supernatural previously proved that a human could be possessed by an angel and not know it. I would love to see Sam and Dean’s reaction if they ever found out that John was actually possessed by Michael and was grooming them to become vessels for both Michael himself and Lucifer. That would probably shatter their entire worldview, but it would be a great twist for the show.
