It is not uncommon for rivalries to develop between celebrities. After all, many pop stars and actors are constantly in direct competition with their contemporaries for gigs, roles, overall sales and WORLD DOMINATION.
The following are some of the shadiest moments between celebrities over the years. While there are a lot of celebrities out there throwing shade at each other and straight-up feuding, this list consists mostly of some of the more legendary beefs between iconic stars. Some of the entries on the list are of lesser-known people, but you can be sure that the level of shade was just too amped up to not share. There are, of course, a lot of beefs that didn’t make it on to this list mostly because they are too well-known and would therefore be repetitive. Without further ado, here are 15 of Hollywood’s most ruthless shades.
15 Mariah Carey vs. Jennifer Lopez
To kick off this hilarious list is one of the biggest divas of all time, Ms. Mariah Carey. It seems like almost every time Carey is in front of a camera, hilarity ensues (whether it’s watching her refuse to sing while appearing on Carpool Karaoke with James Corden or more recently botching up her New Year’s Eve performance for all the world to see). This woman is hilarious! That is why she has her own E! reality show, Mariah’s World. Equally hilarious was the assertion she made back in the early 2000s when a paparazzi asked her about Jennifer Lopez and she answered, “I don’t know her.” That is pure comedy gold and shady as hell! This has become one of the best shades of our generation.
14 Chelsea Handler vs. Angelina Jolie
Anyone who has watched any of Chelsea Handler’s talk shows has gotten the idea that Chelsea doesn’t really care who she offends. Handler is known more than anything for her brassy, unapologetic and direct manner. Sometimes, her words can be cutting. She has taken on many people and topics on her shows, but there is one topic specifically that seems to make Handler fly off the handle: Angelina Jolie. Handler has had nothing good to say about Jolie and beyond not having anything good to say, she has said some pretty nasty stuff on Watch What Happens Live. For example, she once said, “She seems like a demon. As a woman, I know when you see somebody walking across the room that’s a bad girl. I just don’t like Angelina Jolie. I don’t think she’s a girl’s girl.” WOW! We get the feeling she really doesn’t like her.
13 Kourtney Kardashian vs. Kris Humphries
For anyone who has ever watched Keeping up With the Kardashians, it is fair to say that Kourtney Kardashian is pretty good at throwing shade. We’ve seen her do it whenever she gets a chance whether it’s at her mother Kris, one of her sisters or Scott. But, in our opinion, Kourtney’s best moment of shade came during an appearance on the Tonight Show with David Letterman when pressed about her sister’s (Kim) marriage to basketball player, Kris Humphries. Letterman inquires whether the whole marriage was a publicity stunt for their reality show, to which Kourtney simply answers, “'I think if she was going to do it for publicity, she’d pick someone that people knew.” OUCH!
12 Lily Allen vs. Courtney Love
Both Lily Allen and Courtney Love are female musicians (one’s American and the other is British). They have both been known to get into it with anyone who messes with them publicly. Whether it’s on camera, on Twitter or in person, these two women seem like they are real tough cookies. Well, in 2010 at The Brit Awards, Love was calling out Allen to the media for putting a “lock” on all Chanel dresses that evening. Allen was not amused and was brutal in her response to the allegations saying, "I would never fight with her, as a rule I don't pick on crazy old ladies." But this diss doesn't stop there! She continues, ”It's the sort of thing a paranoid drug addled lunatic might come up with.” That must have stung to the point that Love kinda apologized and walked away from the shade. Wow Lily.
11 LeAnn Rimes vs. Brandi Glanville
LeAnn Rimes is a country music star and was at one point the youngest performer ever to win a Grammy. Brandi Glanville is a reality TV star on shows such as The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. So why would these two women have beef? Well, it so happens that Glanville was married to Eddie Cibrian back when Rimes started dating him, which is never good. As if stealing her husband wasn’t enough, LeAnn has been quite shady to Glanville in Twitter exchanges. Rimes once tweeted, "Flying out with my boys in a few hrs. Love that it's a family tour weekend. It's always more fun when they are with me” referring to Glanville’s children with Cibrian. Glanville replied, “Someone is trying 2 get under my skin by calling MY children "her boys" Sooo transparent! They R MY boys, Eddie Boys and ur step-sons... 4 now.” Not very healthy.
10 Bea Arthur vs. Betty White
Thank you for being a friend…apparently not. A lot of us remember The Golden Girls theme song about friendship and always being there for each other through thick and thin. These sentiments were echoed throughout the show, in regards to a group of four senior women living together in Miami in the 1980s. Apparently, though, once the cameras went off so did the love, especially between Bea Arthur and Betty White. This is what White told the Village Voice about it: "Bea had a reserve. She was not that fond of me. She found me a pain in the neck sometimes. It was my positive attitude—and that made Bea mad sometimes. Sometimes if I was happy, she'd be furious!” Apparently, Arthur was not very lovey to anyone on the show once the camera stopped. It seems Dorothy really did have a chip on her shoulder.
9 Madonna vs. Lady Gaga
A lot of people watched as Lady Gaga made a move on Madonna’s career in the early 2000s. The two artists were immediately compared, with Gaga having to often articulate what made her different from Madonna during interviews. Madonna, however, was not so impressed. Especially after the release of Lady Gaga’s "Born This Way," which definitely sounds a bit like Madonna’s "Express Yourself." When asked about it, Madonna had this to say, "I certainly think she references me a lot in her work. And sometimes I think it’s amusing and flattering and well done.” She then adds, “Her songs seem to be a statement about taking something that was in the Zeitgeist, you know, 20 years ago and turning it inside out and reinterpreting it. There’s a lot of ways to look at it. I can’t really be annoyed by it...because, obviously, I’ve influenced her.” She goes on to say, “It felt reductive.” Shade!
8 Martha Stewart vs. Gwyneth Paltrow
Martha Stewart is the all-American, albeit once incarcerated, high priestess of etiquette and good taste. She also happens to be hilarious and often speaks her mind. Gwyneth Paltrow is known for being one of the most iconic actresses of our generation. Most recently, Paltrow decided to step on some toes and launch her very own high-end lifestyle website called goop.com which has been received with mixed reviews, based on its wealthy target audience. However, goop’s existence seems to really irk Martha who had this to say about Paltrow, “She just needs to be quiet. She’s a movie star. If she were confident in her acting, she wouldn’t be trying to be Martha Stewart.” Then Martha Stewart Living went on to print a recipe for pie filling called “Conscious Coupling” as a jab at Paltrow's "conscious uncoupling with her ex, Chris Martin. And goop.com responded to this by sharing a recipe for “Jailbird Cake.” Oh Boy.
7 Kanye West vs. Jay Z (Beyoncé)
Recently, Kanye West has had a few alleged mental health issues, stemming from the infamous heist of his wife Kim Kardashian in Paris late 2016. This shade seems a little sadder than it does nasty , but it’s definitely shade. Here is what West had to say about BFF Jay Z, after it was all said and done at his Sacramento show in November: “You wanna know how I’m feeling? Come by the house. Bring the kids by the house, like we brothers. Let’s sit down…I can’t take this shit, bro. Our kids ain’t never even played together.” Kanye delivered a 15-minute speech and talked about the VMAs and Beyoncé, saying, “Beyoncé, I was hurt 'cause I heard you said you wouldn’t perform unless you won Video of the Year over me and over 'Hotline Bling.'" This guy just goes off sometimes. We'll see how long he and Jay Z remain friends.
6 Demi Lovato vs. Taylor Swift
Demi Lovato and Taylor Swift have had more than a few catty public moments in the past few years. Most recently, during Kesha’s trial with Dr. Luke, Lovato seemed to slam Swift for not having anything to say on the matter. She tweeted, “ I’m so ready for self-proclaimed feminists to start speaking out or taking action for women’s rights.” Apparently this beef between the two goes back to Demi’s BFF, Selena Gomez, becoming chummy with Swift a few years back. The first hint of this was a video which shows a fan asking Lovato, “How’s Selena?” to which Lovato curtly replies, “Ask Taylor.” There has been a lot of shade flinging between these two, so don’t expect for this one to go away any time soon.
5 Selena Gomez vs. Kendall Jenner
This one all started at Coachella 2014 when Selena Gomez, Kylie Jenner and Kendall Jenner were seen hanging out like BFFs at the trendy concert venue. However, a week later—in an act that can only be described as major shade—Selena deleted all the pictures of the three of them from her Instagram and unfollowed both Jenner sisters. Apparently, Gomez found out that Kendall Jenner and Justin Bieber had been flirting behind her back and she was not happy. She was even less happy apparently the following year (2015) when pictures of her now ex, Bieber, and Jenner getting cozy were taken and published in the tabloids. Of course these pictures also happened to be from Coachella. Major shade.
4 Perez Hilton vs. Ariadna Gutiérrez
Not a lot of people watch or care for silly things like the Miss Universe Pageant, but last year when American host Steve Harvey announced Ariadna Gutiérrez (Miss Colombia) as the winner of the pageant and not as the runner-up, which she actually turned out to be, the world gasped! We all watched the footage of the poor Colombian girl standing on stage humiliated after the error was recognized, while the crown was removed from her head and placed on the actual winner. Gutiérrez seemed pretty gracious about the whole situation, but panel judge Perez Hilton had a very different take on Ms. Colombia. To add insult to injury, he had this to say, “I don’t know if the people at home could see this, but Miss Colombia was being a straight-up diva bitch. She was rude to her translator. She was giving the most awful side-eye, throwing major shade.” OUCH!
3 Donald Trump vs. Rosie O'Donnell
As many of us are aware, Donald J. Trump has gone from being one of the most obnoxious, misogynist, billionaire/TV personalities to the President of the United States. But, back in the day when Donald was just a neurotic, vile celebrity and Rosie O’Donnell was the outspoken and often outlandish moderator of the show, The View, a very nasty beef started between these two. It all began with a controversy around Miss USA Tara Conner when O’Donnell called Trump a “snake-oil salesman” (which seems fair). What Trump said in response is the equivalent of a nuclear bomb, however. It goes a little something like this, “Rosie’s a loser. A real loser. I look forward to taking lots of money from my nice fat little Rosie.” The level of shade that these two have slung at each other over the years is epic, if not sad.
2 Sophia Loren vs. Jayne Mansfield
This picture of Sophia Loren and Jayne Mansfield is one of the most iconic bits of shade of all time. After almost 60 years, Sophia Loren explained to Entertainment Weekly exactly what was going on: “Paramount had organized a party for me. All of cinema was there, it was incredible. And then comes in Jayne Mansfield, the last one to come. For me, that was when it got amazing...She came right for my table. She knew everyone was watching. She sat down. And now, she was barely...Listen. Look at the picture. Where are my eyes? I’m staring at her nipples because I am afraid they are about to come onto my plate. In my face you can see the fear. I’m so frightened that everything in her dress is going to blow—BOOM!—and spill all over the table.” Yes, those are her own words.
1 Bette Davis vs. Joan Crawford
Bette Davis and Joan Crawford are two of the most memorable actresses of all time. Both Davis and Crawford began their careers at around the same time. They had their heydays at around the same time and they even starred together in the classic Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962). That was enough time for them to nurture one of the most notorious rivalries in Hollywood history. These two women despised each other, however Davis was a lot more vocal about it, saying things about Crawford like, “I wouldn’t piss on her if she were on fire” and “Why am I so good at playing b*tches? I think it’s because I’m not a b*tch. Maybe that’s why Joan Crawford always plays ladies.” Damn! Luckily, we will soon get to see this epic rivalry play out on the screen in the show Feud, created by Ryan Murphy.
