For automotive enthusiasts, there’s nothing greater than the big debate. Standing around the old water cooler, or even the BBQ, talking about which cars are better, faster, and stronger. Are trucks better, or are motorcycles the true way to cruise down the highway at top speeds? The questions and trains of thought can go on and on, really.
But perhaps one of the age-old debates that never gets old is whether you're a Muscle Car person, or are you a sports car person? And if you didn't know there’s a difference, we’ve got a lot more to talk about, don’t we?
In this article, we’d like to take a look at some of the most powerful muscle cars that are still collected and sought after to this day by collectors and enthusiasts, and those sports cars that seem to have fallen out of favor all together.
So you bring the cold colas, and how about we go out for a nice midday drive?
20 MUSCLE CAR THAT STOOD THE TEST OF TIME: DODGE CHARGER
It was 1966 when this bad boy first went into production, and it's been a long time since, but this vehicle sure hasn't gone out of favor. Many generations later, this car is still tearing up highways and is the choice of law vehicle for many law organizations in North America. Not to mention, it's Dominic Toretto’s trusted ride from The Fast & Furious.
19 MUSCLE CAR THAT STOOD THE TEST OF TIME: PONTIAC CATALINA
Muscle car fans should agree about this next point. Ask any auto-enthusiast, especially a lover of all muscle cars about this one here. You are bound to see this individual stare off in the distance, picturing this very vehicle. He'll smirk and say: "Oh yeah ... that was one of the great ones."
18 SPORTS CAR THAT DIDN'T: THE ABARTH 205
As beautiful as this car undoubtedly is, it sure did not fare well with the solid and difficult test of time. In actuality, there were only ever three of these models ever built, so if you're a collector with a deep pocket, get to searching for these.
It was available only from 1950 to 1951. Not a long run at all, and compared to how many times a lot of these muscle cars have been remodeled, this car's history is quite sad.
17 MUSCLE CAR THAT STOOD THE TEST OF TIME: FORD MUSTANG
Probably and arguably the greatest muscle car of all time. Like the Charger and Challenger, this one is still going strong and is currently in its 6th Generation which started in 2015.
The newer models aren't as favored as those of the sixties, seventies and the return to the classic form that the company launched in 2005, but it's still selling strong.
16 MUSCLE CAR THAT STOOD THE TEST OF TIME: PONTIAC GTO
The GTO is one of the forerunners on our list here today, as nobody has anything bad to say about the GTO, or they shouldn't anyways. Probably one of the greatest vehicles to ever come out of the Pontiac stable, this one was actually designed by John DeLorean of DeLorean Motors, way before he ever launched the ever-popular DeLorean.
15 SPORTS CAR THAT DIDN'T: THE AC ACE
Auto Carriers Ltd was launched way back in 1901, and although they have put forth many great vehicles in their day, this one didn't fare all that well in its day. It did run for ten years from 1953 to 1963, but altogether, you won't see many of these on the roads, like say you'd see a Mustang or Charger. In order to see one, you've got to look on the World Wide Web.
14 MUSCLE CAR THAT STOOD THE TEST OF TIME: PLYMOUTH BARRACUDA
"So this ain't the end, I saw you again, today ... I had to turn my heart away ... Smiled like the sun, kisses for everyone ... And tales, it never fails ..." Ah! Who can forget the classic lyrics from the song of the same name of this particular car by Heart, a band that definitely will always have a place in our hearts (see what we did there?), just like this car.
A barracuda presents power, class and of course, those long drives to the lake on a summer weekend.
13 MUSCLE CAR THAT STOOD THE TEST OF TIME: OLDSMOBILE 442
Believe it or not Oldsmobile got started 122 years ago! The world is getting old dear friends, and yes, even what we consider to be the modern world. The automotive industry itself is only getting older, and these cars – these treasures that mark their significant moments in history – are turning into classic relics from the long gone past. The 442 is a classic that will never get old, no matter how long its been around.
12 MUSCLE CAR THAT STOOD THE TEST OF TIME: PONTIAC FIREBIRD
Made popular in so many television shows and even films, this one can't get old, and many auto-enthusiasts will most definitely hold it in high regard for years to come.
It first launched in 1967 and although Pontiac isn't around anymore, these can still be found out there if you look hard enough. The vehicle enjoyed a 4th generation which was issued from 1993 to 2002, but it sure didn't match up to the classic models.
11 SPORTS CAR THAT DIDN'T: ALPINE A106
Ahead of its time, sure, but in the end, as a vehicle that was expected to outshine a lot of cars from its era, it didn't quite meet up to standards and in the end became the lost relic that it now is.
It was available from 1955 to 1961 and although it made an impression, it didn't make enough of a bang to be remembered all that fondly over time. This of course doesn't reflect its quality, but merely its capacity to be a strong and sturdy presence on the timeline of vehicles overall in its category. Same goes for all the sports cars on our list.
10 MUSCLE CAR THAT STOOD THE TEST OF TIME: CHEVROLET CAMARO
The Camaro is Chevrolet's greatest triumph in the muscle car category. Although many would say that the Corvette should take that title, many would argue that the Corvette is more of a sports car anyways, particularly the newer models, but we'll say that the Camaro, which is better described as a Muscle Car more fitting of the name and style categorization, is right up there with the Mustang and the Charger.
9 MUSCLE CAR THAT STOOD THE TEST OF TIME: BUICK RIVIERA
Often imitated, never duplicated, this one here is a powerhouse and all of the versions are top notch. Many consider this one to be a luxury car, but we ask you to look beyond that title, as it has been souped up many times over by aficionados of muscle cars in general.
It was launched in 1963 and the original models, which led into the seventies, are still cherished to this day.
8 MUSCLE CAR THAT STOOD THE TEST OF TIME: CHEVROLET CHEVELLE SS
Can it be considered one of Chevrolet's greatest achievements in the muscle car category? You be the judge, after all, it sure has one heck of a following. The Chevelle itself was released in 1963 and a few years later, the public were introduced to the SS and even the Malibu of the era which shared considerable similarities.
Many still consider the original SS vehicles as a 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu, which is actually quite correct. Think of that next time you see a Malibu out there on the streets.
7 MUSCLE CAR THAT STOOD THE TEST OF TIME: DODGE SUPER BEE
It's all in the name really. A Super Bee signifies a strong Bee worthy of any and all opponents. This explains why so may people are terrified of Bees in general, no mater how small they may bee. Well, this Bee in particular wasn't small, and it still packed one heck of a stinger! Worthy of all the praise thrown its way and definitely a powerhouse that stood the test of time.
6 SPORTS CAR THAT DIDN'T: ASTON MARTIN DB2
Aston Martins are quite popular today, so we'd ask you to give us a chance to explain the inclusion of this model on the list. So if you could stop banging on the keyboard right about now, it would be kindly appreciated. And by the way, if you think this one's bad, just wait to see what else we included.
Moving on, this particular model only lasted from 1950 to 1953 and only a mere 411 were ever produced. Regarded as a special item among racing enthusiasts of the race cars of that era, but overall, it's not looked upon favorably by automotive enthusiasts of road cars in general.
5 MUSCLE CAR THAT STOOD THE TEST OF TIME: FORD TORINO
Come on! Just look at this beast on wheels. It looked like so many of the other cars of the era, but it had its special features too, quite particularly the power it exuded underneath that hood and of course the style of the trunk. A definite powerhouse from the annals of time, and a car that we can stare at all day long. It was first released in 1968.
4 MUSCLE CAR THAT STOOD THE TEST OF TIME: CHEVROLET MONTE CARLO
Yes, your grandfather probably had one of these as well, but that doesn't make it any less of a great car. Let's face it, they knew about their cars back then! Just look back at all the models, all the varieties that were available and just try to say that these vehicles weren't top notch.
Now, we're not telling you that recent models are up to par, because they aren't. But take a look at those first few models and you'll definitely see.
3 MUSCLE CAR THAT STOOD THE TEST OF TIME: DODGE CHALLENGER
Could we really make a list like this without including this beast on wheels? No way, right? The Challenger and the Charger have been going hand in hand for years, and really there's great reason for that.
The first versions of this vehicle were actually built on a Chrysler E Platform, and well, the rest is pretty much history. The car is currently enjoying its 3rd generation in the sun and the models we see today are just as breathtaking as the first. Just take a look at the Hellcat, for example.
2 MUSCLE CAR THAT STOOD THE TEST OF TIME: BUICK SKYLARK
A rather close comparison to the Monte Carlo we showed you earlier, this one packed quite a bit more of a wallop, and one to the bottom of the chin, that's for sure.
It had the similar stylings of the more powerful brand of muscle cars of the era with the comfort and style of a family car trusted by family men of that same time. But remember, just because your granddaddy drove it to the office doesn't mean you can't find one and tear up that old road alongside any other muscle car around. You may just want to to soup it up a tad, because you know the other guy did so as well.
1 SPORTS CAR THAT DIDN'T: FERRARI TESTAROSSA
Now we understand you may be upset at seeing this one on the list, but there's no need to throw things, or have a temper tantrum. Besides, if you're reading this at work, you don't want your boss to come over now, do you? So quiet down and hear us out.
As popular as this one was back in the day, it has not maintained that popularity among the general vehicular enthusiasts crowd, especially in the sports car category. People kind of forgot about this one's beauty, class and speed. Sad but true, folks.
