Katherine von Drachenberg — better known simply as Kat von D — is one of the most well-known tattoo artists and makeup moguls in the showbiz industry. She first made a name for herself on the TLC reality show L.A. Ink and is now best known for her edgy, self-titled makeup line. The celebrity has had her fair share of high-profile romances, including a brief fling with Jesse James from 2010 to 2011. Nowadays, Kat is happily married to Rafael Reyes from the band Prayers. 15 She Didn’t Trust Doctors During Her Pregnancy
Early on in her pregnancy, Kat revealed her plans to use a midwife in lieu of doctors to deliver her baby. She explained her decision was made due to her distrust of doctors. During an appearance on the Informed Pregnancy podcast, she said her first OBGYN visit left her with “a million questions and a sense of doom and fear.”
14 She Used A Midwife Instead
Kat has only spoken positively about her experience using a midwife and has encouraged other moms-to-be to make the same choice. “The minute we met Sarah, it was like, ‘Okay, let’s get excited now,’” she said on the podcast. “It was so much fun. Like, ‘This is really happening. This is how it’s supposed to feel.’”
13 She Had An At-Home Water Birth
Along with Kat’s choice to use a midwife, the tattoo artist also opted to have an at-home water birth so she could deliver her son in the most comfortable way. “[I chose] a natural, [substance] free home birth in water with a midwife and doula,” she explained in a social media post months before welcoming her baby boy.
12 She Was Unable To Breastfeed
Although she was planning on solely breastfeeding her baby, Kat admits that didn’t prove to be a viable option when her son was first born. “During the first two days of Leafar’s life, his ... sugar count had been low, and as much as I had committed myself to strictly breastfeed, my milk hadn’t come in yet,” she explained over social media.
11 So She Used A Stranger For Breastmilk
Her son’s pediatrician actually suggested Kat look into getting a breastmilk formula since she didn’t want to switch him to formula. She explained her midwife put her in contact with a donor. “Needless to say, Leafar’s levels boosted, and we are now happily breastfeeding at home,” the mom-of-one explained.
10 She’s Raising Her Newborn Vegan
He may still be only under a year, but Kat has been very open about her plans to raise her son as a Vegan. She announced her decision via social media months before he was born, which received mixed reactions from fans. “I already know what it’s like to make life choices that are not the same as the majority,” Kat wrote. “So your negative comments are not going [to] influence my choices.”
9 She Said Won’t Vaccinate Her Son
Even before baby Leafar was born, Kat was adamant that she and her husband wouldn’t be vaccinating their infant. Her controversial decision received immense backlash from her followers. However, the tattoo artist took to social media to defend herself. “I knew the minute we announced our pregnancy that we would be bombarded with unsolicited advice,” she wrote.
8 Fans Said They’d Boycott Her Makeup Line Over It
Some fans were so enraged over Kat’s decision not to vaccinate her child. So much so, some fans went so far as to say they’d boycott her makeup brand if she didn’t change her mind (which she hasn’t. “Kat Von d is an anti vaxxer so I guess I have to boycott another brand lmao,” one fan wrote, Buzzfeed confirms. Another said they were so bummed, “... as I've only recently bought her 10-year anniversary palette. Looks like I'm gonna have to boycott her brand.”
7 But She Insists She’s Not An Anti-Vaxxer
The criticism prompted Kat to respond by insisting that she and her husband are not against vaccinations- even though they’re still not planning on getting their son his shorts. “Just to set the record straight from the beginning, I just want to say I am not anti-Semitic, and I am not an anti-vaxxer," she said in a video posted online.
6 She Wants Fans To Unfollow Her If They Don’t Agree
Kat has never been afraid to hit back at the naysayers online. When she received the first wave of criticism for her anti-vaccination stance, she told her fans she doesn’t care if they unfollow her. "But if you don’t dig a certain something about what I post, I kindly ask that you press the unfollow button and move […] on,” she wrote.
5 Her Dad Isn’t Supportive Of Her Parenting Decisions
Interestingly, it’s not only Kat’s fans that have a problem with some of her controversial choices. She revealed that her dad has been against some of her decisions. “My own Father flipped out on me when I told him we decided to ditch our doctor and go with a midwife instead,” she explained via social media.
4 She’s Not Afraid To Breastfeed In Public
Even though Kat has trouble breastfeeding in the beginning, nowadays things are going smoothly for her and baby Leafar. The edgy mama often posts videos or photos of her breastfeeding her son while out and about, proving she has no problem feeding her child in public- despite what the naysayers may say!

Given her edgy style and controversial choices, most fans expected Kat to give her firstborn an eclectic name. She and her husband Rafael chose to name their son Leafar, and although it’s an uncommon moniker, it’s not as outrageous as some were expecting. But it does have a hidden meaning - Leafar is actually her husband’s name spelled backward!
2 She Says Pregnancy Left Her “Self-Conscious”
Kat, who’s openly struggled with eating problems in the past, has been honest about how difficult it was to see her body change during and after pregnancy. “I think a lot of women want to be like, ‘I’m cool with stretch marks and my body changing,’” she said last year, People reports. “But I was expecting to not be as affected by it. I’m self-conscious.”
1 She Didn’t Think She’d Ever Have Kids
Although Kat seems like a natural when it comes to motherhood nowadays, the star has admitted that she didn’t always think she’d be a parent. "The funny thing is that I've known since I was 7 years old that I was never going to have kids,” she said a few years ago, People reports. “I always imagined myself as this worldly, traveling, gypsy lady."
