The single life often gets something of a bad rap. For some reason, there are silly people out there who seem to think that being single is the same as having some kind of plague. They think that its the worst possible scenario. That, by not having romance in your life, you're some kind of weirdo who just can't get their life together. Um, wrong. Actually, all of the above are just the kind of fallacies that we need to quit spreading. There's zero truth in any of them at all and we all know it.
In fact, being young, free, and single is a fabulous thing. When you get to just be alone for a while, don't waste your time wanting a relationship, enjoy it. Here are some of the reasons it's just plain awesome.
15 You get to hang out with your friends 24/7
There's nothing quite like your girlfriends to remind you how awesome life truly is. Whenever you're feeling a tad lonely, hooking up with your favorite ladies is certain to change your mood. After all, these are the people in the world who get you more than anyone else. They are the ones who will always have your back and know just what to say when things get a little too much for you. Respect them. Love them. Be there for them. Those are the rules.
When you're single, you don't need to worry about guys or what they think. You get to dedicate your free time to having out with your besties whenever you fancy it. Remember, chilling with your best friends is always time well spent. You can kick back, relax, and just be yourself.
14 You can just up and leave whenever
Staying in the same place for years and years can be kind of dull. The last thing you want to do when you're young is settle down and never get a chance to really see the world, right? When you lock yourself down into a relationship, you have another person to consider. You can't just 'decide' to move to France one day and go ahead and do it. Instead, you have to have an awkward sit down conversation about it with them. You have to decide if they will come with you or not. You have to decide if you'll stay together. You have to have all those chats. Yikes.
When you're single, it's a whole other kettle of fish. You can just choose where you want to go and leave. It really is that simple.
13 You get a WHOLE bed to yourself
While few people like to admit it, having to share a bed is a full-on nightmare. It's far from the romantic dream that people like to make it out to be. Instead, it's basically like fighting with someone all night long. You're forever pulling the covers off one another and wriggling about. What's more, things get so much worse when the summer comes. As the nights get hotter, things get all the more uncomfortable. It's a terrible thing and no one says it at all.
When you're single, things are a little easier. All of a sudden, you get all the space and all the cover whenever you need it. You don't need to worry about sharing or being considerate. Oh no, the whole bed is your domain. It's time to sleep like a starfish.
12 You don't worry about 'settling'
Sometimes, when you start getting serious with someone, a terrible thought sneaks into the deep, dark corners of your mind. What if you end up 'settling' with the wrong person? After all, how can you know who is the right one for you? Is it possible to really know that this person is the one you will love for years and years to come? Probably not really!
The truth of the matter is that none of us really understand our own minds and hearts. We might screw things up now and then... and that's perfectly okay. When you're free and single, you don't have to panic about settling down with the wrong person. In your own mind, you're holding out for the right one. The one who will be there for you no matter what. When you come across them, you will know!
11 You have no in-laws to stress you out
Beware of the in-laws from actual hell. When you first get into a committed relationship, meeting the parents can be kind of scary. After all, you want to get along with them and make sure that they like you as well. Still, sometimes, you can end up with in-laws that hate your guts. It may be no fault of your own, but these things do happen from time to time and it can be nothing short of a nightmare situation.
Luckily, when you don't have a significant other, you only have to deal with your own family. You don't need to worry about hanging out with pesky in-laws or deal with their many quirks. Instead, it's all about you and the people that matter the most to you. And, let's face it, that's how life should be.
10 Going on dates is actually the best
People like to moan about going on dates, but I honestly don't know what their deal is. Let's face it, getting all dressed up and spending some time with a new person is amazing. So long as you don't put a whole load of pressure on things, you don't need to worry about it all that much. Remember, every person that you meet will not be the 'one.' You shouldn't expect them to be either. Just go with it and have some fun with some cool people. That's how your young life needs to be.
Oh, and what's more, if you really are sick of the dating scene, give it a break. Sometimes, it's more than healthy to just relax and do things on your own for a while. You deserve to do just what you want.
9 You get all the closet space you need
If you're anything like me, you will have a whole load of clothes! Moving in with your partner may sound like a dream come true, but wait until it's time to share your closet space. Suddenly, you're struggling for every inch of room in your drawers. You fight over the silliest things because you both need extra space for your stuff. Plus, if it's your first time cohabiting, you may not know how to handle it all at once!
When you have the luxury of living alone, you can have all the closet space you need. That means that you have extra room for all the clothes that you need in your life. What kind of magic is this? Did someone say the words 'shopping spree'? I'm sure I heard them from the back of the room.
8 Netflix is your BFF at home
You should never underestimate the great company of the likes of Netflix. When you're single, you take the term Netflix and chill quite literally. It's not about getting down and dirty with someone. Oh no, it's all about binge-watcing your favorite series for hours and hours in a row. There's nothing more relaxing than this activity and you would not have it any other way.
When you have an evening to yourself, you make some popcorn, get into your pj's, and settle in. The best thing about being single is the fact that you don't have to compromise and watch a rubbish series. Instead, you get to relax and watch the entire new series of Orange is the New Black in sheer peace. What could be better than that? That's right.... Absolutely nothing on this planet at all.
7 'Single Ladies' is your song
Sure, it may be something of a cliche, but you don't even care about it. When Single Ladies comes on in the club, you jump up and get on the dance floor as soon as possible. After all, you know that now is actually your time to shine. It's time to show the whole club just what you've got. It doesn't matter if you're with a date or a load of your girlfriends, you need to make time for this dance. It was made for you.
No one has to know that you spend every single night in your bedroom practicing the moves to this one. They don't need to know that you actually watch YouTube videos to learn every single move too. All that matters now is the fact that you're rocking it 100%.
6 You never have to share food!
Let's be real... The movies lie in a seriously big way. They make out that sharing food with your significant other is the most romantic thing in the world. Think about it. When Lady and the Tramp share that big old bowl of spaghetti, your heart's meant to melt, right? Well, I'm just going to come out and say it. Someone has to. Sharing food is awful. It's not romantic at all... it's just a big old pain. Trying to pretend that you don't want that last meatball is tedious and silly. You know you do!
When you don't have a partner, this is no problem whatsoever. Instead of wasting half your food on another person, you can just go ahead and eat it all yourself. Massive pizza for one, please! There's no shame in it. Go ahead... eat as much as you damn please.
5 Oh, and you can totally spoil yourself
What's more, you don't have to worry about splashing your cash on expensive dates or the like. Oh no... Everyone knows that is not what you are about. Instead, you get to keep all of the money you earn. It's yours and you can do whatever you please with it. And, if that means treating yourself to a bunch of new clothes or the latest game online, so be it. There's no one that's going to moan at you and say that you spend too much. No one is going to pout and tell you that you could have better spent that money on doing something 'together.'
Taking the time to spoil yourself is a worthwhile thing to do. There's no one in this world who can look after you better than you can look after yourself.
4 Guy drama just ain't a thing
If you want a reason to be single, just take a look at your friends who are in relationships. You spend a load of time listening to their guy problems all the darn time. It's frankly kind of exhausting! When you hear of all their relationship woes, be sure to make a mental note of the whole thing. Remember, relationships aren't all about romantic strolls in the park. They can be a real pain at the best of times too!
We always tend to think that the grass is greener on the other side of the fence, but come on! You know that is not the case. Being with someone takes work and sometimes it can be drama too. Be thankful of the fact that you are getting the chance to have some drama-free time.
3 You never have to compromise on movies
Honestly, I think that one of the worst things about being in a relationship is having to watch terrible movies. I mean, sure, you might be lucky. You can your partner may have the exact same taste in movies. But, let's be real, how likely is that? Not very!
When you've got a boyfriend or girlfriend, suddenly, you have to compromise on just about everything. You have to pretend that you're 100% okay with watching an awful movie about an alien invasion. You have to act like this is a perfectly normal thing to do when deep down inside, you know it's just not the case at all. Luckily, being single means the end of this nonsense. For once, you can just relax and watch whatever you damn please. It's a freedom like no other to be honest.
2 Personal grooming is... optional
Being with someone means just one thing at times — personal grooming. You know what I'm talking about. You have to make sure that every inch of your body is trimmed down to perfection. Everything has to be ideal for your partner. After all, you care about them and want them to look at you with glee each time! But, can we be really frank? It's a pain to do all of the time.
If you're free as a bird, you don't always need to worry about this issue. You can go for months and months at a time without dealing with it. During the winter, when it's cold, you can hibernate and not even worry about the whole grooming thing. All that matters is your own personal levels of comfort. And that's just how it should be.
1 You can learn to actually love yourself
Finally, one of the greatest things about single is the fact that you get to love yourself in a way that no one else can. When you spend a lot of your time alone, you end up getting to know yourself in a serious way. That means that you understand how to make yourself happy. It's honestly a gift like no other and it's something that you have to enjoy when it happens to you.
Being in a relationship is not the be all and end all. It will not complete you or, indeed, your life. Instead, you are the only person who can make yourself feel complete. Taking some time to be alone means that you get to truly understand this in a way you didn't before now. It means that you get the love of the only person that matters — yourself.
