For people that fall into the right age range, ABC’s TGIF lineup from many years ago will always hold a special place in their heart. While that network considers their current shows that air from 8 until 11 PM on Fridays to be another TGIF programming, for many people the concept hit its prime during the ‘80s and ‘90s.

The home of classic sitcoms like Full House, Perfect Strangers, Boy Meets World, and Family Matters among others, most of the old TGIF shows are still beloved today. Despite that fact, many of those series actually featured problems that their fans chose to overlook. With all of that in mind, it is time to take a look at this list of 15 things we choose to ignore about classic TGIF sitcoms.

15 Full House’s Overly Saccharine Endings

For many Full House fans, it was great that they could always depend on each episode ending with a feel-good moment. However, the show often ended up taking things way too far in order to have an overly saccharine ending. For instance, during a season 3 episode, Stephanie got therapy because of severe anxiety and she was cured in minutes so that everything was great in the end.

14 How Unoriginal Step By Step Was

As one of the best remembered TGIF series, Step by Step managed to develop a dedicated fan following. That is a great thing but it doesn’t mean that the people behind that show was very original. After its plot obviously was lifted from The Brady Bunch and it borrowed its comedic tone from other sitcoms like Full House or Perfect Strangers.

13 Sabrina the Teenage Witch Completely Forgetting About Its Main Character’s Magazine Job

Once Sabrina the Teenage Witch had been on the air for several seasons, the show’s writers needed to come up with new stories so they did things like give her a job at a magazine. Unfortunately, after dedicating time to her workplace and introducing viewers to her co-workers, all of that development was dropped after that storyline ended without explanation.

12 Jo Marie Payton Quitting Family Matters After Getting Sick of Playing Second Fiddle to Urkel

For your average Family Matters fan, there is every reason to hope that the show’s talented cast cared about one another as much as we enjoyed their work. Sadly, it appears that may not have always been the case as Jo Marie Payton, who played Harriette Winslow, left the show before it ended because she was sick of Steve Urkel hogging the spotlight.

11 How Many Times Diff'rent Strokes Got Way Too Serious

At the height of TGIF’s popularity, viewers tuned in to enjoy a worry-free night of entertainment as a family. Oddly enough, however, the people behind Diff'rent Strokes broke that spell many times by featuring highly dramatic issues over and over. In fact, they tackled issues like the dangers of hitchhiking, steroids, and don’t get us started on the bicycle man episode.

10 The Fact That 3 Different Actors Played Topanga’s (From Boy Meets World) Dad

Even though Boy Meets World featured many recurring characters, there is no doubt that its main characters were Cory, Shawn, and Topanga. Yet, for some reason, the show couldn’t keep basic information about Topanga’s character straight including what her father looked like. After all, Peter Tork, Michael McKean, and Mark Harelik played her dad in different episodes and look nothing alike.

9 How The Clueless TV Show Lacked The Intelligence Of The Movie

On a surface level, the movie Clueless may have seemed like it was a lightweight film but, in reality, it was based on the spectacular novel Emma and it poked fun of teen culture in a really fun way. On the other hand, the TV series based on that movie was a cookie cutter series that failed to challenge viewers in any real way.

8 How Weird It Was That Joey Lived with the Tanners for So Long

During the early seasons of Full House, it was really heartwarming that in Danny Tanner’s time of need his brother-in-law and best friend moved in to help him. That said, it just seems sad and strange that Joey lived in the Tanner basement for so many years even as Jessie’s wife moved in and then their twins lived on the property.

7 Mr. Turner’s Disappearance From Boy Meets World

Due to Shawn Hunter’s absentee father, it meant that one of his teachers, Mr. Turner, cared about him. Not only did Shawn move in with his male role model, but his connection with Turner meant enough to him that he broke free of a cult out of concern for his new father figure. After all that, Turner left the series without explanation immediately after that cult incident.

6 The Reason Why Nephew Cody Was Written Out of Step by Step

When Step by Step began, it could be argued that the series’ most popular character was Cody, the male lead’s nephew. That is why it was so remarkable when he was written out of the show. As it turns out, the reason that took place was the actor who played that character, Sasha Mitchell, was sentenced to 3 years probations after an arrest for spousal abuse.

5 Aunt Hilda From Sabrina the Teenage Witch Becoming a Lot Less Bright

Throughout the run of Sabrina the Teenage Witch, the titular character was raised by her two aunts, Zelda and Hilda, the latter of which was the fun relative in the beginning. Unfortunately, over time Hilda went from being a passionate, sweet, and resourceful woman to become a lot more dim-witted which made her character much less interesting.

4 The Way Mr. Feeny From Boy Meets World Treated His Favorite Students

When we think of Mr. Feeny from Boy Meets World, images of a kind-hearted and supportive mentor who also challenged his students instantly come to mind. However, when you really think about it, he seemed to put so much time and effort into his favorite group of students that it only seems logical that their peers would feel neglected by him in comparison.

3 Dinosaurs’ Incredibly Depressing Finale Episode

Over the span of television history, many series finales have gravely disappointed the loyal followers of the show in question. When it comes to the final episode of TGIF’s Dinosaurs, however, it stands out even among that group because of how depressing it was. Instead of leaving viewers with an image of happiness or catharsis, the series came to an end with a mass extinction event.

2 Steve Urkel’s Years Long Crush On Laura Was Quite Creepy

From the moment Steve Urkel debuted on Family Matters, his antics made viewers love him but his behavior towards one of the show’s other lead characters was very troubling. After all, throughout the early seasons, his character seemed to think that Laura Winslow owed him her affections so he refused to stop hitting on her despite her obvious lack of attraction to him.

1 The Inconsistency of the Home that Full House’s Tanners Live In

As fans of Full House know, from the outside the Tanner house was tall but thin and featured a bright red door that was unforgettable. The problem with that is the Tanner living room was so large that it never could have fit in a home that looked like that from the outside. For further proof of that, when the real-life house was put on sale, pictures of its tiny by comparison living space went online.
