In a world in which there are more celebrity chefs than ever before, it still could be argued that Gordon Ramsay is the best known of them all. As the host of shows like Hell’s Kitchen, MasterChef, Kitchen Nightmares, and several others, the world has come to know Ramsay for his large personality and high expectations.

Even though many of the things that Gordon Ramsay has been involved with have turned to gold, saying the man has the Midas touch would still be an exaggeration. After all, he certainly has made some missteps in his life that his fans have decided to overlook. With that in mind, it is time to take a look at this list of 15 things we choose to ignore about Gordon Ramsay.

15 His Constant Feuding With Other Chefs

Considering that all of us inherently are biased about our own skills in the workplace, one of the best ways to gauge your abilities is to consider how your peers feel about you. From that perspective, Gordon Ramsay hasn’t been very successful. After all, he has publicly feuded with other chefs like Anthony Bourdain, Jamie Oliver and Jacques Pepin, among others.

14 The Show He Had No Business Hosting

As an incredibly accomplished professional chef, when Gordon Ramsay hosts shows in which he judges how other people cook and run restaurants, it made all the sense in the world. Yet for some reason, he was hired to star in a show called Hotel Hell in which he judges hotel managers despite never running that kind of business himself.

13 The Unnecessary Vulgarity

In a lot of ways, Gordon Ramsay’s constant vulgarity has been a key factor in his success as it helps him to stand out from his fellow TV chefs. However, now that we’ve seen him host MasterChef Junior, where he is much nicer and doesn’t swear, the anger and frustration we used to think he was genuinely expressing now seems like an act.

12 The Prize From One of His Biggest Shows Isn’t What It Seems Like

During each season of Hell’s Kitchen, viewers are told that the winner gets to serve as the executive chef at a major restaurant as a part of their prize. Sadly, in reality, most of those winners have been given made up and meaningless titles like “senior chef” so their careers aren’t helped all that much. On top of that, one winner never got a job at all for work visa reasons.

11 He Hired Someone to Film His Father-In-Law and His Mistress

In a truly strange series of events, Gordon Ramsay got sued in 2012 after he hired a private detective to photograph his father-in-law in a private moment with his mistress. Taken to court by the mistress, she claimed that Ramsay threatened to release those photos to the public and strangely enough, he showed them to the woman’s son for some reason.

10 All of His Failed Restaurants

As a part of Gordon Ramsay’s television career, he has mentioned the fact that he has opened restaurants that closed. That said, he clearly tries to downplay the sheer quantity of the businesses he started have failed. In fact, finding up to date numbers can be a challenge but he has been a part of at least 23 failed eateries.

9 He Often Takes The Joy Out of Cooking

At its core, cooking is supposed to be a beautiful thing as the food that results from the process provides those in your care with sustenance. However, when you watch many of Ramsay’s most popular shows, like Kitchen Nightmares and Hell’s Kitchen, it is overwhelming how much his anger overrides that aspect of being a chef

8 Accusations that Parts of Kitchen Nightmares Are Faked

When it comes to so-called “reality” shows, most of us realize that things likely didn’t play out how they seem on the show in a lot of cases. After all, the editing process can really change how things are perceived. More importantly than that, in the past, there have been accusations that part of Ramsay’s show Kitchen Nightmares were entirely faked for the cameras.

7 His Behavior Towards Sofia Vergara

As someone who has appeared on endless talk shows over the years, you’d think that Gordon Ramsay should have known how to act on them long ago. Unfortunately, during a 2004 appearance on The Tonight Show, he was wildly disrespectful to Sofia Vergara who he shared the stage with. Not only did he talk over her repeatedly and mock her accent, but he also made several “jokes” about her intimate life.

6 The Way He Bullies People

When you look at the harsh way that Gordon Ramsay treats people, the best way you can frame his behavior is that he is trying to break them down so he can build them back up. However, the fact that he once put a piece of bread on each side of a woman’s head and called her an idiot sandwich points to him just being a bully.

5 The Fact That He Tricked a Vegetarian Into Eating Meat

Clearly, a very outspoken person, at various points Gordon Ramsay has been very open about his distaste for people who don’t eat meat. Evidently, not content to express his opinion alone, in 2005 Ramsay completely betrayed the trust of a customer who told him he was a vegetarian. Opting to serve that customer a pizza with ham in it, Ramsay was then caught on camera laughing at the man’s outrage.

4 The Time He Framed His Former Mentor

Long before restaurants used computers for everything, their reservation books were hugely important as they contained information about their customer base that was used for ordering purposes. For that reason, when it was believed that Gordon Ramsay’s former mentor Marco Pierre White stole a reservation book it soured a lot of people’s opinion on him. Years later, Ramsay told the New Yorker that he “nicked” the book and “blamed Marco”.

3 The Fact That Most Kitchen Nightmares Restaurants Went on to Fail

With only a few notable exceptions, each episode of the show Kitchen Nightmares leaves viewers with the impression that Gordon Ramsay’s sage advice has saved another restaurant. Unfortunately for the business owners that fans of that show get to know, at least 60% of the restaurants featured on the series closed not long after Ramsay and the cameras left.

2 That He Got Caught Serving Frozen Food in His Restaurants

During several Kitchen Nightmares episodes, Gordon Ramsay has seemed outraged when he finds out that restaurants have been serving their customer's frozen food. As it turns out, Ramsay was forced to admit that one of his own restaurants cooked frozen food which seems hypocritical. In his defense, he claimed that his situation was different because the frozen items were prepared to his chef’s specifications.

1 His Stated Views On Hiring Female Chefs

Considering that Gordon Ramsay has worked with and seemingly mentored several female chefs, it seems like he recognizes that gender has no bearing on culinary ability. Unfortunately, he told The Guardian that women are bad employees because “they only work three weeks a month”, “you can’t get into the staff loo,” and “how can you shout at someone who’s four months pregnant?”
