After six glorious seasons, winter is finally is here. It’s been a long time coming and we couldn’t be happier that we're finally going to see what all this winter fuss is about. And in those six seasons, Jon Snow has come a long way from knowing nothing—and so have we. But what we still don’t know a lot about is the actor who plays Jon Snow, Kit Harington. While everyone North and South of the wall (and on the planet) knows who Jon Snow is, we know very little about the man behind the character. Well, we know a few things, like he’s gorgeous, has long flowing curly hair and rocks a killer smile, but that’s about it. And we wanted to change that. So we scoured the internet looking for the best little-known facts about our favorite male lead heartthrob. These are the absolute BEST 15 things you didn’t know about Kit Harington. We knew nothing, Jon Snow. Until now.
15 He told Jon Snow's secret
While the rest of the whole world spent a year waiting to find out whether Jon Snow was alive or dead, a handful of people knew. His parents were the first to know and then his girlfriend Rose. But everyone who knew Jon's secret was all extremely close family and friends of the actor save for one. Kit was driving from his parent's house a little too fast when a cop pulled him over. After pulling over, the cop said to him, “there's two ways we can do this: You can either follow me back to the police station now and I book you in or you can tell me whether you live in the next series of Game of Thrones.” Of course, he told the police officer (we would, too!).
14 You won't find him on Twitter
Or really any social media in fact. Type in Kit Harrington on any social media site and all you get are fan pages. And if you’re wondering why the star is a no show on one of the most influential social media sites, it’s for good reason. Kit would rather have people focus on his characters rather than his private life. He says, “I don't want people thinking they know me instead of the character... but it's great for people to fictionalize rather than know the truth.” Which is also the main reason why he’s not on Twitter. Oh, and also the fact that he hates talking about himself more than he has to. And let’s just be honest, what good did Twitter do for Ed Sheeran?
13 He didn't know his real name
Yes, you read that right. Kit Harington did not know his real name was Christopher until he was 11. That’s a long way to go through life not knowing who you really are. Well, at least what your given name is. But what’s even worse than him not knowing was the way he found out. Kit says he was at school filling out his name on some school tests that were supposed to figure out what group of kids—the clever or not so clever—you belonged in. He wrote “Kit Harington” and he said, “[the teachers] looked at me like I was completely stupid, and they said, ‘No, you're Christopher Harington, I'm afraid.’” He was pretty much mortified. But luckily for us, he says he never felt like a Chris. We don’t think so either.
12 He's not afraid of his birthday suit
Whew. Glad we got this one out the way. Not that we were worried or anything because being on a show like Game of Thrones would pretty much require you to throw all modesty, reservations and shyness out the window. And let's just be completely honest with one another: What would have the scene in season six, episode two been without a little hint of his derrière and absolutely, stunningly gorgeous body? Kit said he signed a nudity clause in the beginning so he knew he was bound to show his body some time. And boy are we the lucky ones! And TBH, there’s no shame in our game and we’re not afraid to admit that we might have hit pause and rewind a few times on that scene.
11 He auditioned for GoT with a black eye
And to top it off, it was his first audition for the show. Talk about an interesting first impression. Still, it threw us for a loop. And we would like to preface our next statement by voicing the fact that we believe whole-heartedly that there is absolutely no one in all the world who could have played Jon Snow better or more valiantly than Kit. He is and makes that character—and he’s easy on the eyes, duh. BUT, with that said, we’re not sure how he made it past the audition with that shiner. He doesn’t remember how he got the black eye, but he did say that he felt “it made me look a bit tougher than not having a black eye.” Either way, we’re just über glad he got the part!
10 He loves theater
Like, really loves it. And besides studying acting at drama school, he has always been in and around theater. In fact, when he first started acting, he never really thought of himself in a role like Jon Snow. He said, “I didn’t really think I’d be a leading man in any respect whatsoever. At drama school in my third year I was resigned to the fate of being Young Male Rape Victim No. 2.” But he’s not just the leading man in GoT; in 2016 Kit landed the role of Faustus in the Duke of York’s Theatre production of Doctor Faustus. Where he found the time to do all that between all the heavy GoT filming is beyond us. But if it makes him happy, we’re happy, too!
9 He never grew facial hair before GoT
It's crazy to think that Kit had never tried out his trademark beard and hair before Game of Thrones. In fact, Kit was a bit worried and unsure if he could even grow a beard at all! But luckily for him, it was his baby face that helped him land the role (we’re sure the black eye helped, too!). George had written all the characters as teens. Jon was written to be around 14 and when Kit auditioned he was asked to play that age. It was his baby face that helped him pull it off. But it didn’t work. And the producers told him to grow his hair and beard. The rest, as they say, is history. Enter his signature curly locks and scruffy jawline—utter perfection!
8 He thinks he should have waited
The fact that Kit admitted this outloud makes our heart go pitter-patter even harder for him. Swoon! Because what guy do you know who would admit to feeling that he could have waited a bit longer before having sex? None that we can think of. But here’s this mega star who openly admitted to feeling a bit rushed. We give him mad props for his honesty. We love it! We can't help but wonder what the girl he lost it to was thinking when she read what he said. Was she upset? Probably not. In fact, we’re pretty sure she doesn’t care. Why? Because she slept with JON F-ING SNOW! We mean, Kit Harington. You get the point. Either way, it’s a done deal.
7 He broke his foot before season three
So how did it break? You would think it had something to do with the strenuous elements or physical requirements of filming such a massive show like Game of Thrones. But it wasn’t. In fact, the way he hurt himself is pretty much the same way we do: by doing something stupid. After a night of partying, he realized he lost his house keys so he thought it was a good idea to climb through his one-story window, but then he fell. So for pretty much all of season three, he had a “medical boot that he could take off, but he still couldn’t walk” Michelle Clapton said. He felt so bad that he bought one of the producers a nice bottle of whiskey. We’re pretty sure he was forgiven.
6 He hates Downton Abbey
This might appear to be a totally random factoid, but really, when you hear him explain why he hates Downton Abbey so much, it makes total and complete sense. His biggest problem with the show? He said he believes it “celebrates the class system, and its kind of overall message seems to be, ‘Wasn’t it good when everybody knew their place within society.'” Kit is not a big fan of old ways and feels that Americans have an ‘“unhealthy obsession” with things like the class system and royalty stopping just shy of including fame. And... we kinda agree with him. We love celebrating the celebrity. But you know what we love celebrating more? Him! And the fact that he’s sensitive to ideas of class just makes us love him even more.
5 He's of noble blood
And we’re not just talking about his Targaryen bloodline. What most people don’t know (and Kit would rather not focus on—he even dismissed any talks about this in his interview with Jimmy Kimmel) is that he comes from a long line of posh British families. Ah ha! We think we’re beginning to understand his loathing of Downtown Abby so much because he’s basically tied to it. What’s even more interesting is that Kit—and the Haringtons in general—are believed to be the “direct descendants of King Charles II, and his uncle is a baronet.” Wow! But Kit doesn’t care about any of it and believes that neither should we. And now he plays a king on the biggest show on the planet. Long live the King of the North!
4 He fell in love with Rose on set
We knew it! Their chemistry in that love scene together in the mountain pool was just too good not be real! And in 2016, Kit proved us right! They appeared at the Olivier Awards in London that April holding hands and showing a lot (for a couple who is so private) of affection for one another. When asked about his fondest memory of filming thus far by Vogue Italia, he said season two was his favorite. “The country is beautiful, because the Northern Lights are magical, and because it was there that I fell in love," he said. "If you're already attracted to someone, and then they play your love interest in the show, it becomes very easy to fall in love.” Could he be any more romantic?!
3 He just moved in with his girlfriend
There’s a lot to be said about Kit’s on and off relationship with his prior on-screen love interest, Rose Leslie who played Ygritte, but you’re definitely not going to hear him say it. That’s why it came as such a surprise to fans of the show and the couple that they were (finally) moving in together. That’s right, Kit and Rose are taking the next step in their relationship and sharing the same space. But don’t hold your breath because that’s pretty much all the detail we’re going to get. Even Nicole Kidman couldn’t get him talking when she put him on the spot during a The Late Late Show interview when she asked if there they were going to get married. To which all he could say was, “Wow.”
2 He faced his biggest fear in season six
From the freezing terrain of Iceland to nonstop action and fighting scenes to walking down the streets of Westeros naked while a nun screams behind you “SHAME! SHAME!,” as an actor on Game of Thrones, you really have to put your body into harsh conditions. But that's all a walk in the park compared to having to face your biggest fears on camera and still have to act. That’s exactly what Kit did when he had to film the scene where he was being trampled over by soldiers in the Emmy Award-winning episode nine, "Battle of the Bastards." Kit is extremely claustrophobic, and he said about the scene, “I’m mortally afraid of crowds. I panic. It was one of the most terrifying things and most uncomfortable—15 bearded Irishmen crushing you.”
1 He's extremely private
You could probably gather that from his lack of social media interest and accounts. Like other celebrities who like a clear cut separation line between their public and private lives (Jennifer Aniston is another über private star), Kit chooses to bow out because he’d rather keep some things to himself. Even in interviews, he is notoriously guarded. When he was being interviewed for Rolling Stone magazine, the writer had to pry for more details, of which Kit reluctantly gave just enough to pique readers interest. Other off-the-table topics include conversations and questions about his relationship. In an oversaturated world of the blurred lines between public and private, we applaud Kit for sticking to his beliefs. It just makes every picture or tidbit we hear or see that much more special!
