On July 15, 2016, Netflix released the first season of Stranger Things, and people instantly fell in love with the characters, the storyline, and the overall feel of the show. On October 27, 2017, the next season was released, and fans are already looking forward to the third season now that we’re all done binging the second season!
Part of what makes the show so popular is the fact that the actors and actresses don’t just play lovable characters; they are also funny, talented, fashionable, musical, attractive, flexible, well-known, strong, creative, ambitious, caring, and are friends in real life (and, some, maybe more than friends?!).
Therefore, in order to be able to survive until the next episodes come out, fans can learn 17 facts about the cast of Stranger Things. But beware: fans may fall deeper in love with the cast ever reading this!
17. Winona Ryder Grew Up With No Electricity
Winona Ryder was named after the town she was born near (Winona, Minnesota), though she later grew up in a ranch commune in Northern California. There, her and her family lived with no electricity, but when Winona was seven, her mother turned a barn into a movie theater and would let Winona skip school to watch movies there all day. Perhaps due to growing up with no electricity, Winona considers herself a late bloomer, even today when it comes to electronics. She was not even familiar with the term “streaming” when Netflix reached out to her about being in a little Netflix show called Stranger Things. She sure did figure out all of those different lamps and Christmas lights, though, as she played Joyce Byers, a mother in this Sci-Fi series.
16. David Harbour Said That Joe Keery Stole His Hairstyle
After the second season of Stranger Things came out, fans couldn’t stop talking about Steve, played by Joe Keery. However, David Harbour, who plays Chief Jim Hopper, posted a photo on his Instagram, stating that Keery stole his hairstyle. While that seems like a broad statement, his comparison photo sheds a different light!
After this, Harbour posted a series of photos, all comparing himself to his co-stars: a photo of “lineage,” showing Keery, himself and then Patrick Swayze, since a fan pointed out that young Harbour looks like the late Swayze himself. There was another photo comparison of him and Keery (with a caption saying that his Instagram would only consist of photos like this now!). Check out his page to see for yourself, Harbour goes on and on in the most amazing way.
15. Finn Wolfhard Would Love To Direct And Write
Finn Wolfhard, who plays Mike Wheeler in the series, is a very focused and young individual. He has had guest roles on shows like The 100 and Supernatural, he plays the the bass and the guitar, he’s a freshman in high school who enjoys spending time with his family, friends, and pets. He has been told that working on a film set is the best film school there is, and since he loves acting and reading people (he’d be a psychologist if he weren’t an actor), he would love to continue working his way up to directing and writing. He also knows that—although there is no such thing as perfection—he has grown a lot while playing Mike, and loves that there is still work to be done while acting.
14. Millie Bobby Brown Assured Her Mom That Shaving Her Head Was A Smart Move
Millie Bobby Brown didn’t quite know what she was getting herself into while auditioning for her role as Eleven. She also didn’t know that she would have to shave her head until she was officially offered the part. Her mother wasn’t thrilled about that, but she assured her mother that it would grow back and that she had to do whatever it took to show how far she was willing to go for the role and for the series. However, according to IMDB, due to her hair change, she has been mistaken for a boy on several occasions and said that her alter ego now is “John.” Besides shaving her head, she also had to watch films from the ‘80s like Poltergeist, The Goonies, and—most importantly—E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. (Eleven is sort of like E.T., isn’t she?)
13. Gaten Matarazzo Is A True Role Model
Gaten Matarazzo plays Dustin Henderson on Stranger Things, and also has cleidocranial dysplasia, a condition that affects the development of bones and teeth. Despite not having collarbones and having to wear fake teeth, Henderson only cares about raising awareness for the disease.
He urged others who suffered from cleidocranial dysplasia to not be afraid or ashamed, since Henderson himself didn’t let his disability slow him down when it came to auditioning for parts.
After being turned down for several roles, the creators of Stranger Things actually gave Henderson’s character the same condition, and since then, he has received numerous messages from people who have cleidocranial dysplasia and who have now been able to come out of their shells a little. Just look how proud he is of his new smile!

All of these young actors and actresses have been getting interviewed on red carpets and accepting awards at award shows, and with the success of Stranger Things, the world has seen them in suits and dresses regularly now. But the actor who portrays Lucas Sinclair—Caleb McLaughlin—seems to really know what he is doing when it comes to dressing up and showing off a sense of fashion.
Fans have seen him in printed blazers and bowties, a great pair of loafers, purple suit jackets (that even MTV raved about), sunglasses, and a pin-striped double-breasted suit. This kid has style.
His personal Twitter account occasionally even shows off more stylish looks; like a great plaid top, a denim-on-denim ensemble, cool street style, and another suit which features shorts — how daring and fab!
11. Natalia Dyer’s First Role Was In ‘Hannah Montana: The Movie’
Natalia Dyer, who plays Nancy Wheeler, studies at New York University’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study, meaning she can create her own interdisciplinary program. Currently, stars like Karlie Kloss and AnnaSophia Robb also attend this small interdisciplinary school, and celebrities like Anne Hathaway, Dakota Fanning, and Dylan & Cole Sprouse graduated from there. It’s a good option for actors and actresses with parts in films like Hannah Montana: The Movie (which was Dyer’s first role), After Darkness (a dramatic film she’s in with Kyra Sedgwick), and Stranger Things (the Netflix series that is known and loved, in which Dyer plays a bada** older sister).
10. Charlie Heaton Is Possibly Dating His Co-Star
Charlie Heaton portrays Jonathan Byers on Stranger Things, and his character has a crush on Natalia (Nancy)—and vice versa—and this on-screen romance has sifted into real life; the two have been seen holding hands on several occasions, they cozied up at the 17th annual AFI Awards, which is great because fans on social media love ‘shipping the two. They’ve even be spotted at LAX flying back and forth together.
Speaking of LAX, Heaton was also recently denied entry into the U.S. after cocaine was reportedly found in his luggage. Though he was not arrested for or charged with a crime, he did miss the show’s premiere party. Despite the chemistry between Heaton as Byers and Dyer as Wheeler, Dyer told Harpers Bazaar she doesn’t know who she hopes Nancy will end up with and is excited to see if the world will get #TeamSteve or #TeamJonathan.
9. Cara Buono Sought Out An Acting Career At A Young Age And On Her Own
At a young age, Cara Buono grabbed a trade paper, found an ad about an upcoming casting call and snuck in for an audition. This led to her role in a play called Spook House, which then led her to films with big names like Ethan Hawke, Chloë Grace Moretz, and Cuba Gooding Jr. Some of the shows on her resume are the ever popular CSI, Law & Order, The Sopranos, ER, NCIS, and Mad Men.
Aside from acting, Buono also directs, produces, and writes (like the short film Baggage that starred Liev Schreiber, and the screenplay When The Cat’s Away that landed a screenplay deal with Miramax).
8. Joe Keery’s Character Is The Father Of A Lookalike Character
Joe Keery may play Steve Harrington on this show, but he is also known for bearing a resemblance to Ben Schwartz — the actor who plays Jean-Ralphio Saperstein in Parks and Recreation. In fact, Michael Schur, the creator and producer of Parks and Rec, even went as far as to say that Jean-Ralphio is indeed Steve’s son.
Fans who had been talking about these doppelgängers went wild, of course, and Visa even jumped on board with these fan theories by airing a commercial starring the two actors. In the commercial, which Schwartz wrote and directed, Keery gives Schwartz a piggyback ride before the two are mistaken for each other by fans and even by Keery’s mother.
7. Noah Schnapp Is A Twin
— Noah Schnapp (@noah_schnapp) September 7, 2017
Many people have pointed out that Finn Wolfhard looks similar to Noah Schnapp, who plays Will Byers, since the two have dark, shaggy hair and similar cheekbones. They have tweeted that they get confused for each other a lot and have even been mistakenly tagged in each other’s Instagram photos.
The real kicker is that Schnapp is actually a twin in real life; he has a fraternal twin named Chloe, and he wished her a Happy National Twins Day on Instagram! The young twins are quite creative and quite close, because when Schnapp isn’t acting like he is stuck in The Upside Down, the siblings write and star in their own plays at home. Schnapp even considers his twin sister—not Wolfhard or even Winona Ryder—his most highly respected collaborator.
6. Matthew Modine Is An Activist
Matthew Modine is not everyone’s favorite character on the show, as he plays the controlling Dr. Martin Brenner. In real life, though, he is a giving soul and serves as the founder of Bicycle For A Day, which empowers individuals to make a difference in communities, in the environment, and when it comes to personal health.
According to Bicycle.com, Modine has always been a cyclist, but he became an avid rider when he moved to New York for acting, and now, he loves riding the streets of NYC and taking in the architecture, the sights, and even the crazy pedestrians, drivers, and taxis. With Bicycle For A Day, Modine hopes to show people that just by biking, people can become the solution for bigger problems like global warming.
5. Randy Havens Had His Own “Mr. Clarke” Growing Up
When Stranger Things premiered, fans had a new favorite teacher: Mr. Scott Clarke, the boys’ science teacher. In real life, the actor, Randy Havens, said he had a few “Mr. Clarkes” in his life — specifically his English teachers, since he loves reading. He also considered the show’s script a tribute to all of the books and movies he loved reading growing up, and is a fan of horror movies, books, and E.T., which was an inspiration for the series. He didn’t have to read up on science lessons for his role, though, since his character connected with others on a more emotional level; Mr. Clarke went along with the boys’ adventures and curiosity because they reminded him of himself at that age. So he shared care, strength, and knowledge.
4. Sadie Sink Went On A Family Vacation With Her Co-Star
Sadie Sink joined second season of Stranger Things as Maxine Mayfield (Mad Max), and friendships with her castmates helped her ease into the role. She said that her and Matarazzo would sing songs from broadway’s, Hamilton, that she got into a water balloon fight with McLaughlin, and that she went to an Adele concert with Brown.
In fact, the two young girls got so close that they ended up vacationing together in Cabo, Mexico! They played in the ocean, held hands while enjoying a nice walk on the beach (in a different way than she held hands with someone on the show), went to the spa (since they deserved some R&R after such intense and emotional film sessions!), and ate several meals with family members while staying at the Grand Velas resort.
3. Darce Montgomery Is Strong (Inside And Out)
Last training session today! ?Massive shoutout and a huge thank you to the guys down @waimaclub Phil, Andrew and Graham. It's been an incredible journey and I've come so far in the last few months and still have so much to learn and space to grow. I feel honoured to have been trained by you guys, such an inspiration! Time to get cracking ?? #redranger
Darce Montgomery also recently joined the cast as Billy Mayfield, but before that, he played the Red Ranger in this year’s reboot of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.
The actor grew up in Australia, and he wasn’t even allowed to watch TV as a child, so he had never actually seen the Power Rangers before. Therefore, in order to prepare for that role, he thought about a strong superhero in his life: his mother. And to audition for his role as Billy, he actually wore a G-string and danced around to music from the ’80s — which obviously made a positive impression!
Both of his main roles required some sort of physical strength, and for the Power Rangers film specifically, he trained for about two and a half months, six days a week, and three hours a day (which definitely pleased fans).
2. The Kids Are All Super Creative
Obviously, just based on watching Stranger Things, it is clear that these young actors and actresses are extremely talented. But, off the screen, they are just as skilled and awesome.
Gaten Matarazzo played Gavroche in Les Misérables, while Caleb McLaughlin played Young Simba in The Lion King on Broadway. Finn Wolfhard, as mentioned, can play a couple of instruments. Noah Schnapp writes and performs his own plays at home. And both Matarazzo and Millie Bobby Brown are talented singers; Brown even has a YouTube account full of her covers of popular songs.
The boys even took their love of music and their real-life friendship a step further on Halloween, when they all got together and watched “High School Musical”! (They weren’t huge fans of it, but Wolfhard apparently started playing basketball because of Zac Efron.)
1. Millie Bobby Brown Was Fake Adopted By A TV Star
Millie Bobby Brown has definitely been praised for her work as Eleven — even by other celebrities, such as Aaron Paul of Breaking Bad. He thought she was so talented after watching the Sci-Fi, series and even joked about adopting her. Since Brown already has parents, though, the two settled on a family dinner.
Lauren, Paul’s wife, shared a photo of the evening on Instagram, with hashtags #MillieBobbyPaul and #FirstFamilyPhoto.
Brown’s pic from the night called Aaron and Lauren Paul her #FakeAdoptedParents. Before the dinner, Paul was able to interview Brown for Elle and was apparently super nervous. He survived, though, and afterwards called Brown “brilliant, articulate, and absolutely adorable”. Stranger Things is brilliant, the cast is adorable, and Aaron Paul is so right, so season three better get here quickly!
