If you think you might have any old Pokémon cards stored away somewhere, now might be the time to go check exactly what you have.
Pokémon entered the lives of many around the world during the latter half of the 1990s and it has never really gone away. From movies to TV shows to video games, the franchise has incredible staying power. It was only three years ago when Pokémon arguably peaked, 20 years after it was first introduced when it felt as if pretty much everyone was playing Pokémon GO.
If you're in your late 20s/early 30s, chances are Pokémon trading cards also played a big role in your Pokémon fandom 20 years ago. New cards are still created and collected today, but not to the extent that they were during the 90s and early 2000s. The thing is, some of those cards we held in our hands as children are now worth an awful lot of money.
And we mean an awful lot. The Pikachu Illustrator card, considered by some to be the rarest Pokémon card in the world, recently sold at auction for $195,000 reports The Independent. Another Illustrator card was sold back in 2013 for a little less than $55,000, but the elusive card has now well and truly smashed its own record.
So why is this card so valuable, and how can you know if you have one? Well, first of all, there's a photo of the card above. Unfortunately, the chances of you having one are incredibly slim. There were only 39 ever made, ten of which are now with official collectors. That does mean 29 copies of the rarest of Pokémon card are still out there somewhere. You know, providing they haven't been destroyed and lost forever.
Just because your old collection doesn't include an Illustrator card doesn't mean its worthless. Shiny Charizard Pokémon cards, of which we definitely used to own at least one, are also highly sought after. Earlier this year a collector parted with $107,000 for the chance to make one a part of their collection. Although the Illustrator card could only be won via a specific competition, shiny Charizards were up for grabs in regular old packs, so it might be high time you checked the attack for that old collection.
