The Honda Motor Company launched in 1946 in Japan and since then, has produced many models in the automotive industry and, of course, in the motorcycle industry. In particular, the Civic and the Accord have been brand names that many respect and go to, which explains why they are Honda’s greatest selling cars.
Honda is in fact the largest motorcycle manufacturer in Japan, a branch that started back in 1955. By 1982, they were making a whopping 3 million bikes a year!
Their motorcycle branch extension has also done well in terms of sales over the years, yet their consumer rating and opinion is significantly lower overall. The bikes are extremely affordable compared to many other bikes on the market and there are definitely many reasons for that. We’ll get into a few of those reasons below, just in case you were wondering.
20 ISSUES WITH THE STARTER
This is perhaps one of the lousiest issues to have and probably one of the most frustrating to experience. This issue, however, didn't come about after years of service. Consumers reported issues with the starter right off the bat in their first year of ownership, or earlier, so this one's quite grave.
There’s nothing worse than wanting to go for a ride, and your bike doesn't start!
19 EARLY ENGINE FAILURE
And like many of the issues that can absolutely frustrate the heck out of you, an early issue with your engine can definitely be serious cause for a horrible day; especially if you had a nice ride planned.
Many Honda clients have reported such issues – a staggering amount in fact. The fact that this happens so often is proof that there's a far greater issue with these bikes than one can imagine.
18 ISSUES WITH ENGINE OVERHEATING
This may be the scariest issue of all. For those that understand mechanics and the specific workings of motorbikes in general, this issue isn't all that terrifying. But for the novice rider who is taking his bike out for the fourth or fifth time, an issue like this can be quite scary.
As we know, it's always in the unknown that the most terrible fears lie. At the same time, whether grave or not, your bike shouldn't be overheating that early.
17 VIBRATION WHILE RUNNING
This one isn't as terrifying to a novice as say the engine overheating issue we just discussed, but it can be scary too. Imagine riding on some deserted road when suddenly the bike starts to vibrate under you. It can be quite disconcerting and a little worrisome to some, especially for a beginner. Regardless of whether it's a beginner, a professional or a seasoned rider, this shouldn't happen period.
16 EXPENSIVE REPAIRS
Just because the bikes are affordable doesn't mean that the repairs you'll have to get are as affordable – quite the contrary.
As it turns out, bike repairs on a Honda can be quite expensive, as we've heard from quite a number of consumer reports and complaints. This can be attributed to either a lack of motorcycle mechanics in certain areas, or an overcharging phenomena that seems to plague all motorbike mechanics. We say the latter and not the former. How about you?
15 LIMITED STYLES AVAILABLE AT SHOWROOMS
Many experience this annoying little tid bit here: not enough models in showrooms from around the world.
Imagine choosing a particular model online, only to go to your local dealership to find the same model in every spot of the showroom! That's quite frustrating, particularly so for one consumer who couldn't find the bike he wanted at a showroom in India.
14 ISSUES NOT RESOLVED EVEN AFTER REPAIRS
Many times, no matter how expensive some repairs may be, the issues aren't fixed at the end of it all. Like we said earlier, repairs on these bikes aren't cheap, and it takes time to bring your bike in. So how frustrating must it be to get back home, only to see unresolved issues on your bike? Unfortunately, this happens quite a bit.
13 A FAILURE TO RECEIVE PROMOTED DISCOUNTS
At times, there's nothing worse than to have been promised something by a company or dealership, yet when it's time to collect on said promise, the company doesn't deliver.
If a company says half off, then they should give you half off. Now, not to say you can get Honda bikes at half the price (how much cheaper can they get?), but still, you catch our drift.
12 LONG WAIT TIMES TO GET ALL APPROPRIATE DOCUMENTATION AND REGISTRATION NUMBERS
There are also those consumers that complained about the long wait times for them to receive their registration numbers and legal documents regarding their new bikes. Most of these issues were reported in India, but a few have experienced this elsewhere as well. This can present a huge problem, as some places around the globe have very serious legal ramifications for not having the appropriate registration papers and plates.
11 SUB-PAR MATERIALS USED
Overall, they may very much look like the other bikes and motorcycles you see around. The styles might remind you of the motorcycles you've always dreamed of riding, but that doesn't mean that the bikes themselves are just as good as, say, a Ducati, or even a Triumph.
Reports of sub-par materials being used have surfaced among many comments in message boards, and we more than believe them. How else could these bikes rack up so many complaints?
10 PUSHY SALESMEN
And at times, there's nothing worse than finding a pushy salesman on that same showroom floor. As a novice biker, that's the last thing you need.
A beginner needs to take his or her time and really make sure before committing to a purchase. He or she doesn't need anyone telling them what to think. We wonder how many salesmen pushed consumers into buying a bike they didn't initially want?
9 AMBIENT NOISES COMING FROM THE BIKE
No one wants noises to come from the bike, either. This can lead to a bunch of other problems, especially for a person who tends to worry about every little thing, making a mountain out of a molehill.
"What was that?" "Is my bike going to fall apart?" These questions are enough to drive a person mad! Of course, these ambient noises don't always mean disaster, but they can signify issues nonetheless.
8 UNBALANCED STEERING
Yikes! Now this one can mean utter disaster, especially when traveling at top speeds. Did you ever have a problem with your handlebars on your bicycle being loose while going down a steep hill? Pretty terrifying, wasn't it? And it probably led to a few scrapes and bruises. We know it did for us. Well, on a motorbike, the end results can be much, much worse.
7 COMPLAINTS ABOUT CUSTOMER SERVICE
If this showroom looks empty, there's a good reason for that. Many complaints about customer service have surfaced over the years over how Honda makes and sells its motorcycles.
Consumers have actually reported bad customer service relations on the part of the company both on the telephone and in person at showrooms. That’s never a good thing – especially when your product is already lagging considerably.
6 EARLY BATTERY FAILURE
Probably one of the most frustrating things to experience, whether a car owner or bike owner. It's funny, but you don't hear much about bikes losing battery power. It seems to be an issue that's reserved for cars and trucks, but it happens to bikes as well – and a little too often for Honda bike owners, if you catch our drift. It can be an unfortunate problem, especially if no one's around to help you jump start your bike.
5 ISSUES WITH SHOCKS
Could be a rough ride ahead if the shocks aren't doing what they should be. Again, Honda makes beautiful-looking bikes, but at the same time, they are full of parts that aren't always top of the line. It's like any generic brand out there – looks the same, feels the same, but in the end, there's a lot of what's in the original that's missing. Then again, we're only comparing Honda bikes to a generic brand.
4 BEWARE OF TAKING DELIVERY
Many consumers have stated that taking delivery on a bike isn't at all the best idea. This issue might be more of a dealership problem than a Honda problem, as we know some dealerships, but still. Some consumers have complained about receiving damaged bikes, bikes that aren't the same make, model or even the color they chose in store.
3 "WHY DIDN'T YOU JUST BUY A HARLEY!?"
Of course, this can be an issue as well. When you bring your Honda to the neighborhood watering hole in order to show off your new purchase, you will have to deal with all your buddies saying: "Why didn't you just buy a Harley?" And instead of saying, “Because I really wanted a bike and this was all I could afford right now,” you simply grin and bear it, avoiding confrontation. It takes an iron will to hear that over and over.
2 BACK BREAK ISSUES
If you're experiencing vibration issues, ambient noises, an overheating engine, and a plethora of other problematic issues, it'd be nice to stop the bike and pull over to the side of that deserted road, wouldn't it? It'd be pretty hard to do even that if you've got any problems whatsoever with the breaks, though. So these issues are pretty disheartening to hear.
1 ALWAYS IN THE SHOP
Now, we mentioned how the bike's repairs can be quite costly, and that even after repairs, the issues may not even be repaired in the end. But we failed to mention how often these issues can come up. As it turns out, quite often, considering many have mentioned it in their consumer complaints.
Now, we know that this mechanic here seems to be a pretty cool person to hang out with and maybe you wouldn't mind visiting her from time to time anyways, but imagine going for a cup of coffee instead, and holding off on the trips to the garage. It’d be nice if your bike stopped having issues, though.
