When we think of Jack Black, we oftentimes think of the funny actor that has starred in some of the most hilarious movies, and always knows how to make us laugh. However, there are a lot of things we may not know about this amusing actor.

20 Jack Is Not His Real Name

Perhaps one of the most surprising facts about Jack Black? That’s not actually his real name. Well, not entirely. His actual real name is Thomas Jacob Black. He was named after his father, but opted to go with the nickname Jack, which is how we all know him today.

19 His First Gig Was A Commercial

Everyone has to get their start somewhere, even the most famous of actors. Jack Black got his start when he was just thirteen years old. He starred in a commercial for an Atari video game called Pitfall. It wasn’t a huge role, but it was a role nonetheless.

18 His Parents Are Super Smart

Being such a funny guy, not many people know that Jack Black actually comes from a family of pretty intelligent people. Both his mother, Judith Love Cohen, as well as his father, Thomas William Black, were satellite engineers. That’s not all — they both worked on the Hubble Space Telescope.

17 He Attended A Special School

Like a lot of other kids growing up, Jack Black struggled a lot when it came to school. As a result, his parents tried their hardest to try to help him out. They enrolled him at the Poseidon School, which is a private secondary school that was designed specifically for students that are struggling with normal schooling, according to Uselessdaily.

16 He Dropped Out Of College

Since he struggled so much with school at such a young age, it was only natural that that struggle continued as he moved on with furthering his education. Once he graduated the Poseidon School, he attended UCLA. Unsurprisingly, Jack wound up dropping out of UCLA to pursue his Hollywood dreams.

15 He Was Raised Jewish

As Jack Black grew up, he was raised in the Jewish faith, and he had his own bar mitzvah. However, as he got older, he described himself as an atheist. Once he had his own kids, things changed again. He decided that he wanted to raise his kids in the Jewish faith instead.

14 Tenacious D In The Pick Of Destiny Was A Flop

There really aren’t any Jack Black movies that we can say are terrible. As much as he might not want to admit it, he did have a movie that did terribly. While some may argue that it was a good movie, Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny was a huge flop. It did so horribly that it actually discouraged Jack Black for a while.

13 He Struggled With Drugs

Jack Black has struggled with a lot throughout his life. One of his biggest struggles was with drugs at just 14. He found himself hanging out with the wrong crowd and doing way too much cocaine. It became such a problem that he even found himself stealing money from his mother to buy the drug. Eventually, he decided to better himself, thank goodness.

12 He Regrets Shallow Hal

We’d like to think that, at least when it comes to his acting career, Jack Black doesn't have many regrets. Shallow Hal has to be one of his biggest regrets; it wasn't one of his best films. According to Factinate, he felt like he sold out to make the movie, simply because he got a lot of money just to do it.

11 His Brother Died

To further add on to the struggles in his life, Jack Black’s older brother died when Jack was very young. His brother Howard died in 1989, due to an AIDS-related illness, at the age of 31, according to the Daily Mail. The loss of his brother greatly affected him, and it was something that he had a very hard time getting over.

Have you ever noticed that a lot of your favorite comedic actors oftentimes appear in a lot of the same movies and that the majority of them are all friends? There’s a name for this group, and they’re known as the “Frat Pack.” Jack is a member of the group, along with Will Ferrell, Ben Stiller and Seth Rogen.

You’d think as a big time celebrity, not much could really make you nervous, right? Well, for Jack Black, talk shows actually make him super nervous. According to People, Jack says that there’s a lot of pressure when you’re on those types of shows, and that he starts trying to think about what he wants to say about a month before he appears on a show.

8 His Parents Divorced

This is something that’s really hard for anyone, celebrity or not, Jack Black had to live through his parents going through a divorce. Jack was just ten years old when his parents called it quits, and he decided that he was going to live with his father.

7 He Cried Multiple Times During Toy Story 3

We all know that Jack Black is a great actor, but he was not acting when he cried not once, not twice, but three times when seeing Toy Story 3 for the first time. “I cried thrice during Toy Story 3! Thrice! When those toys hold hands as they slide down into this fire pit of doom? I haven’t been as moved by an expression of mortality in a long, long time,” he told People.

6 His True Romance Scene Was Deleted

One thing that Jack Black really likes to keep hush-hush? He had a small role in the movie, True Romance, in which he played an usher at a movie theater. Unfortunately for Jack, the scene he was in was actually cut from the movie entirely, and no one even knew he was in it until he appeared in the deleted scenes section on the DVD.

A lot of people don’t know that Jack Black is married to someone who’s also famous in her own right. His wife, Tanya Haden, is a very well-known cellist. She got her remarkable musical talent from her father, Charlie Haden, who’s a legendary bassist himself.

Not only is Jack Black’s wife a famous cellist, she’s also known for being a triplet! Her two sisters are also musically gifted, and the three of them have released an album together. They are known as The Haden Triplets. We guess that her dad’s musical talent gene really made its way to all of his daughters.
