When flying at such high altitudes, an airport is meant to be a beacon of safety. Especially if the particular flight we’ve been on has been a bit rough. There are many out there that hate flying and for many reasons—fear, paranoia, the hassle of it—regardless of what ails you whenever you get on a plane, an airport should at least be the one pleasant portion of the time you spend traveling.
Unfortunately though, many airports seemingly drop the ball in being the one beacon of hope amidst the zaniness that has become world traveling. With inebriated pilots, long waiting lines and even bad service in restaurants, many airports have turned from great service, to the sketchy elements skyrocketing through the roof. And at a place where only the planes should be doing the skyrocketing, that’s saying something indeed.
Join us as we take a look at some of these airports that are pretty sketch and have often dropped the ball, so to speak. So buckle in and stay in your seats, as we’ll have the drink cart stop by your place on the plane in a second.
20 NEWARK LIBERTY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
Once known as the Crime capitol of the world, Newark is the place most avoided by tourists trying to see a little of New York and of course New Jersey. Unfortunately, many who fly to the areas have to land here, depending on flight schedules going in or out of both cities, but the place does unfortunately reflect a wee bit of the stigma that has always been attached to the city.
19 LONDON GATWICK AIRPORT
London, England is no doubt the place to be. Bangers and mash, steak and kidney pie, it’s home to some of the greatest writers and musicians in history and a culture that is so wonderful, there isn't anyone that wouldn't want to land there as a destination for vacation or what have you. Yet the state of this airport in particular is quite sketchy, and it's sad, as it contrasts terribly with the beauty of this great city.
18 PARIS BEAUVAIS-TILLE AIRPORT
Everyone wants to go to Paris. And why not? It is, after all, the most romantic city in the world, right? But according to recent reports, there's nothing romantic about the airports in the beautiful city; specifically Beauvais-Till airport. This place was voted the worst in all of Europe. They've been having trouble for the last ten years, and it doesn't seem to be getting better.
17 KABUL HAMID KARZAI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT / AFGHANISTAN
A beautiful country, both rich in culture and yes, hospitality. Very hard to see those words though considering recent turmoil there, but there was a time when visiting this country was in fact common. We hope that day can come again. For now though, this airport in particular isn't the place you want to be and for obvious reasons.
16 TORONTO LESTER B. PEARSON INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
It sure can get cold up in the Canadian Territories to the North, even in this Canadian city, which isn't all that far from the Canadian/US border. This airport was at one time quite good, in terms of service and what have you, but it has gone down on all counts in the latest little while. It’s rather disappointing. The only thing of a positive note are the Inuksuk rock formations or landmarks at the entrance. The only comforting sight you're likely to see there.
15 GENEVA AIRPORT
Geneva too is a gorgeous destination for anyone to visit. This airport in particular, is one of the biggest ones in the city, but that doesn't mean it's the best. For quality of service, it gets a measly 6.8 out of 10 and for what FarandWide.com calls "Passenger Sentiment," it scores a disgraceful 2.8 out of 10. Now that, our friends, pretty much says it all.
14 EINDHOVEN AIRPORT
The On-Time performance for this airport is a disgraceful 5.9 out of 10, and if that isn't bad enough, the old passenger sentiment rates at a horrible 5.1 out of 10. Those numbers say it all, really. Most complaints on social media however, speak of dreadfully long security lines and service so bad, it's worthy of comment on the internet.
13 STOCKHOLM ARLANDA AIRPORT
This airport sure gets a lot of traffic year round, and that's understandable, as it is the city's biggest place to land and take off from. That doesn't speak of quality, however. Sometimes being the biggest fish in the pond doesn't mean you're the best, right? As it turns out, this place too has gotten some horrible reviews regarding service and on-time records.
12 REYKJAVIK KEFLAVIK INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
Definitely a beautiful structure, architecturally speaking, this place is probably one of the prettiest in the world, but once again we are taught the lesson that appearances aren't everything in the end. The pond may be gorgeous and breathtaking, but the service here is downright sketchy and it sure doesn't make the traveling experience fun for the weary traveler.
11 BERLIN SCHöNEFELD AIRPORT
In contrast to the last entry, this place is an eye-sore architecturally speaking, and it doesn't at all compliment the rest of the classically rich architecture that can be found in the rest of this beautiful European city found in Germany. And what it does compliment, is the stiff, horrible service you're likely to get according to some recent reports and complaints.
10 TASHKENT INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT / UZBEKISTAN
The vibrant colors of this airline only invite you further. The images of the planes seem to leap out at you, but don't follow the mirage. As far as we're concerned, after seeing all that has been reported about the place, stay away! The beautiful stream you see is nothing but a pile of cacti growing out of a mound of sand. The biggest problem here is reportedly the controlling of the crowd that seems to be necessary.
9 JOHN PAUL II INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT KRAKOW-BALICE
At some point, some of these airports just start looking all alike. A lot of glass and structures and stretches of corridors that endlessly lead to nowhere but longer lines. This airport is no different of course, and that also means that the terrible service expected at all other airports on this list are likewise to be expected here. Sorry folks! The passengers obviously feel the same way according to a 5.3 rating out of 10.
8 HO CHI MINH CITY Tân Sơn Nhất INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT / VIETNAM
Bright lights! Big City Nights! Apparently, The Scorpions rock band had it right. Those bright city lights surely do attract many people, and Ho Chi Minh has been attracting many over the years, but unfortunately that has led to an overcrowded airport, which also lacks good service. The city is awesome though, offering great food and sights.
7 BORYSPIL INTERNATIONAL
Seems more like a parking lot for planes, this boring structure doesn't offer much character on the inside either. Employees here just seem to be going through the motions and their flight times are never respected according to many complaints made on social media, which is odd considering their quality of service seems quite high. Overall, it's their on-time and passenger sentiment that brings their overall score way down.
6 PARIS CHARLES DE GAULLE AIRPORT
So Paris made the list twice. Looks like you'll be postponing that family trip to the most romantic place on earth, eh? Maybe not, as you can always land elsewhere and take the train. Might be a good idea considering that this place doesn't do quite well at all and doesn't have the best ratings. Passengers that have passed through this place have graded it quite low on social media consumer affairs websites, so the proof is in the pudding.
5 PORT AU PRINCE TOUSSAINT LOUVERTURE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT / HAITI
Unfortunately, the beautiful country of Haiti has seen better days. They have had quite their share of turmoil in recent decades and our collective hearts go out to the great people and their strength at facing adversity. Unfortunately, poor relations between passengers and workers at this airport have made the news and this airport just doesn't seem to get it, resulting in some pretty bad service.
4 CARACAS SIMON BOLIVAR INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT / VENEZUELA
Ranked among one of the worst airports in the world, this one doesn't seem to be doing anything at all to help itself, or rather the direction and employees don't. Considered dangerous as well, with reports of a lurking criminal element reported on the premises, this place doesn't do anything to help the reputation of this beautiful destination.
3 KATHMANDU TRIBHUVAN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT / NEPAL
Looks more like a prison if you ask us. Doesn't it? Yeah .. look at that tower! Can't you just see the star of some action movie running along that wall with the likes of some great classic actor running after him, playing the warden? We can. Look, it's Chris Hemsworth of Avengers fame, and trailing behind him is none other than Tommy Lee Jones. Would make for a great film.
2 EDINBURGH AIRPORT
Sure ... go after the pretty purple lights, and like that aforementioned mirage, you'll be pulled into nothing but a disappointing few hours. Trust us and trust the reports on this one, and here the reports say: Passengers rated this one at a whopping 1.8 out of 10! can you believe that? Need we really say more? We didn't think so.
1 ISLAMABAD BENAZIR BHUTTO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT / PAKISTAN
By looking at this picture, it doesn't seem all that packed or busy, right? Well, don't let appearances fool you, friends. This place can be quite packed at times and there's no getting out of there once the people start to flow. However, it can empty out all at once mysteriously, and although service might be a tad faster at those times, it just so happens to be a tad creepy.
