The Noel Diary is based on Richard Paul Evans' novel of the same name about a man named who returned home after twenty years following a sudden phone call informing him of his mother’s passing. His mother was a hoarder who collected all kinds of things, and in an effort to clear her things from the house he finds a diary by Noel, a woman who stayed with his family while she was pregnant.

He finds the diary just when Rachel shows up looking for information about her biological mother who happens to be the owner of the diary. Rachel and Jake set out on a trip to find her mother, but first he needs to reconcile with his father, whom he hasn’t spoken to in over 30 years.

The veteran filmmaker told The Hollywood Reporter, “when I was casting The Noel Diary, she read the script and said, ‘You’ve got to see this guy Justin Hartley from This Is Us,” adding “he’s in the movie pretty much 100 percent because of Nancy. Nancy still has that great eye for talent, and that’s what rang the bell for me.”
