While on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, Burton explained why he was no longer interested in hosting the game show. He stated: “The crazy thing is that when you set your sights on something…they say be careful of what you wish for, because what I found out is that it wasn’t the thing that I wanted after all. What I wanted was to compete. I mean, I wanted the job, right, but then, when I didn’t get it, it was, like ‘Well, okay, what’s next?'"

Twitter had mixed reactions to the statements by Burton.

Some didn't buy into his statements, but rather believed that if he was offered the position, he would take it.

Others voiced their opinion that he wasn't fit for the show, anyway.

Others supported Burton, emphasizing that the network doesn't understand what a loss it was to not offer him the hosting position.

Burton served as a guest host on Jeopardy! for one week in July 2021 after a petition was signed by fans in his favor.

Since Trebek's passing, Sony Pictures Entertainment has been on the search for a new Jeopardy! host. The show had a series of guest hosts step behind the podium since Trebek's passing. Then, on August 11th, 2021 the network announced that the show's executive producer, Mike Richards, would take over. However, the role was short-lived for Richards, who resigned just nine days later, after insensitive comments he made on a past podcast resurfaced.

The network announced that Mayim Bialik (of The Big Bang Theory) and Ken Jennings (former Jeopardy! champion) will host the remaining episodes of Jeopardy! for the year. However, the show is still looking for a permanent host.
