If you haven't seen the latest Pixar movie yet, you need to go watch it right now. Luca is about two best friends named Luca and Alberto who have an unforgettable summer filled with adventure in the Italian Riviera, but they have one big secret—they're sea monsters. They have a dream to explore the world together without their parents around to tell them what to do, but to be able to do that, they need to win the Portorosso Cup so they can have enough money to buy a Vespa (an Italian scooter). To win the Portorosso Cup, they befriend and team up with a girl named Guilia.

They spend the summer training for the triathlon while trying to hide their secret. But this adorable movie is about much more than sea monsters. It's the first Pixar movie in years to feature a disabled character and it doesn't make a big deal about his disability like other movies do. Here all of the ways this character is changing the way kids view disability.

6 He Jokes Around With Luca And Alberto When They First Meet Him

After Luca and Alberto befriend Guilia, she brings them back to her house for dinner. That’s when they are introduced to her father, Massimo Marcovaldo, and his cat, Machiavelli (who attacks Luca and Alberto since he knows they’re half fish). Although Machiavelli grabs the audience’s attention with his angry, but cute expressions, Massimo is the character who everyone should be paying attention to. Besides Nemo and Dory, he’s the only other disabled Pixar character.

When the boys go fishing with him, Alberto notices he only has one arm. Alberto doesn’t exactly ask him about it, but Massimo can tell he’s curious about it. Instead of telling him what really happened, Massimo jokes around with him and says in a scary voice, “a sea monster ate it.” This is something that happens a lot in real life since disabled people are asked what happened to them all the time. And it makes Massimo’s character so much more authentic.

5 Then He Tells Them He Was Born With His Disability

This moment is what truly made Massimo’s character in Luca iconic—he only mentioned his disability for a brief second. The story wasn’t centered around his disability nor did anybody make a big deal out of it. After Massimo joked around with Luca and Alberto about his arm being eaten by a sea monster, he told them the truth about his disability. He told them, “this is how I came into the world.” That was it. He just told them he was born with one arm and didn’t say anything else about it.

The story moved on even though he was in the rest of the movie. Honestly, that’s the way it should be in every movie. The story doesn’t need to be all about a character’s disability. It’s even better when it’s not since it shows disabled characters living their lives and doing the things they love like everyone else just like in real life.

4 He’s Not A Villain Like Other Disabled Characters In The Past

No offense to The Nightmare Before Christmas (it’s an awesome movie), but the disability representation in it isn’t exactly the best. The only disabled character in the movie is Dr. Finkelstein, a mad scientist who’s in a wheelchair. There are other movies where a disabled character is a villian too, but this is just an example of how disability is usually represented in movies.

Most of the time disabled characters are portrayed as scary villains and this makes kids fear disability in real life. Luca doesn’t do that though. It shows Massimo as just a typical father taking care of his daughter and shows kids that disability is nothing to be afraid of.

3 He Breaks Stereotypes

There are harmful stereotypes out there that make others think that disabled people can’t work, be in relationships, or have kids. Although Massimo’s relationship with Guilia’s mother didn’t seem to work out, they still must have had a relationship at one point. No matter what his character breaks all of those stereotypes since he’s a working father.

Those stereotypes can cause a lot of harm by making disabled people think they can’t do the things they want to or make others question them when they try to. Massimo shows everyone watching that disability doesn’t affect your ability to lead a fulfilling life.

2 His Character Gives Kids A Look Into The Real World

Since Massimo is a supporting character and the story isn’t about him or his disability, audiences, especially kids, can see him as just another person in the world. Jim LeBrecht, the co-director of Crip Camp, consulted with Pixar to make Massimo’s character more authentic and told the New York Times, “Let’s get beyond these tragic stories, these old tropes, where someone with a disability is only in a story if it’s centered around their disability. And let’s do what we’ve done with other marginalized communities over the years, and simply say, ‘Look, we are part of the fabric of society.’”

Everything you see on the TV as a child growing up dictates how you see the world. When films include disabled characters and show them as regular people like the other characters, kids see that disabled people are a part of society. Then they understand that disability is a part of who they are and they’re not different from everyone else in the world.

1 His Character (And The Whole Movie) Teaches Kids Acceptance And Inclusion

The whole movie teaches kids to accept and include everybody no matter who they are. Even though Luca and Alberto are sea monsters, (spoiler alert) Guilia still accepts them for who they are and their friendship teaches kids acceptance. And Massimo’s character shows kids to accept everyone too since nobody thinks of him differently.

Ashley Eakin, a writer and director who was born with a limb difference, told Respect Ability, “representation, especially for kids, is so important because sometimes content is the first time they are introduced to people with different bodies. If we can familiarize differences in films and show that a variety of characters can have disabilities, we have a better chance of creating a more inclusive and accepting society. Representation has the power to change everything.”

Massimo is the first disabled cartoon character in years and one of the few who actually portrayed disability accurately. It may take a while for disability representation to get better in Hollywood, but Massimo’s character is definitely a great start and he’s helping to change the way kids view disability.
