As they say: You can take the boy out of Texas, but you can't take Texas out of the boy. Never were words more truly spoken than about hunky, Academy Award-winning actor and Texas-born and bred Matthew McConaughey.

He loves his home state so much that he, his model wife Camila Alves, and their three kids have moved there. Eight years ago Matthew bought a 10,000 plus square foot Spanish-Mediterranean lakefront home in the affluent Lake LBJ area of Austin. For years, it functioned as a second home. But now his family calls it home sweet home.

Inside, the decor is stylish but understated. No Hollywood vibe to be found anywhere. And outside? The grounds are laid out as a kind of tropical paradise. And the lake view is to die for.

Let's have a look at Matthew's McConaughey family home in Austin, Texas.

Home Sweet Home - Texas Style

Matthew is first and foremost a Texan. And he has stayed true to his roots. Plus his mom Kay McConaughey lives in Austin. So, when Matthew and Camila went looking for a Texas base, it just had to be in Austin.

The mansion was built in 1997 and sits on a 9-acre estate on the shores of Austin's affluent Lake LBJ. Let's do the numbers. It has seven bedrooms, eight bathrooms a two-island kitchen, and a guest house. The home's elevator comes in handy because Matthew's 88-year-old mom Kay, a.k.a." K-Mac" has been quarantining there with Matthew and his family.

The walled courtyard of the Spanish-Mediterranean style house has a fountain and lush landscaping. Because of lockdown restrictions, Matthew's kids recently played photographers, snapping Matthew in the courtyard for a magazine cover. He looks very serious and focused!

And what do Matthew and his family get up to there? Well, with seven boat slips he's got plenty of room for his boats. On warm days, the kids love to swim and go for boat rides. Word is they are learning to water ski.

After a pause in filming due to the pandemic, Matthew is currently working on Sing 2. His Brazilian wife Camila, who has her hands full with three kids and a mother-in-law in residence still finds time for her successful design business, as well as indulging her passions for cooking and water sports. Word is her favorite thing to do is hitting the lake with her paddle boat. And when Matthew's at home? He just loves forgetting he is rich and famous, and simply chills out. Word his that the courtyard hammock is his favorite spot. Usually, there's a bottle of Longbranch whiskey within easy reach.

True To His Texas Roots

Matthew has recently published his memoir, Greenlights. It details his childhood in the tiny Texas town of Uvalde, his Hollywood career, and his finding love with Camila Alves. It's an honest, sometimes funny, and sometimes poignant book. It's pure Matthew.

And much of it was written during the lockdown in his Austin mansion.

Matthew seems totally cool with his childhood. But Howard Stern took one look at it and declared that Matthew needed to go for therapy. Why? Well, some would call his childhood dysfunctional. His parents were married three times, divorced twice. And the marriage was a combination of sometimes violent fights followed by passionate lovemaking. In fact, Matthew's father, "Big Jim" died making love to the fiery K-Mac. For Matthew, that was just the way it was. Still, Howard's worried about the boy.

A Comfortable, Laid Back Lakefront Home

The interior of the house is laid back and unpretentious. It's the kind of house that you can simply chill out in. Camila's design influence can definitely be felt in the master suite.

But for the most part, the mansion's interiors channel a touch of Texas, combined with an emphasis on practical living space, as well as outdoor and water-based pursuits.

Matthew bought the place around eight years ago, saying that, at 80-years-old, his mom wasn't going to last forever. Sure, she comes to Hollywood and has a blast at the Red Carpet events Matthew regularly attends. But her heart and her home are in Texas. So, Matthew bought the lakeside house to be in his beloved Austin and near his sometimes difficult mom.

In fact, K-Mac and Matthew were estranged for eight years because Kay just couldn't resist blabbing to the press about Matthew's childhood. Things between mother and son are now totally cool.

While far from being a traditional granny, Kay loves spending time with Matthew's kids in lockdown. Even better, Kay and Camila get on really well. Two strong women sharing the same home, albeit a 10,000 plus square foot one, could get a bit tense. Reportedly, they share the cooking duties.

And what of California? Well, Matthew's sold his Malibu estate for nearly $15 million back in July of 2020. And it looks like Texas, specifically Austin, is now home sweet home. And by all reports, Matthew, Camila, and the kids are loving their life on the water, Texas-style.

But, just in case Matthew gets itchy feet, he's always got his trusty Airstream trailer to fall back on. He and Camila can leave the kids with granny, hitch the trailer to Matthew's macho truck, and hit the road.
