Madonna and Cher's relationship is just another episode in the series of feuds caused by the unwritten rule that only one female can rule the music industry. Both singers have decades of hits under their belts. The media refers to Cher as the Goddess of Pop while Madonna, as we all know, is the Queen of Pop. These labels might have actually been the reason for their clash.

Cher has already been in the industry for over two decades before Madonna came into the scene. They are both talented artists who are also extremely vocal, daring, and controversial in their own ways. It's no wonder Cher might have felt a little threatened by Madonna's immediate rise to fame in the 80s.

But how exactly did the beef begin and what is their relationship like now?

Cher Said Madonna Was Rude To Everyone When She Met Her

When an interviewer compared Cher's career with Madonna, she said, "There's something about her that I don't like. She's mean. I don't like that." The Moonstruck star didn't hold back, telling a story about meeting Madonna when she came over to her house. "She just was so rude to everybody. It seems to me that she's got so much...She acts like a spoiled brat all the time."

Cher thought Madonna should have been more "magnanimous" with her success. By the use of that term, it seems like Madonna's success really got into Cher. The Material Girl was, after all, younger and equally provocative. And we know the industry has its way of erasing the reigning pop queen once a new star rises. Anyone in Cher's position at that time would have felt defensive, too.

Cher Sarcastically Referred To Madonna As Her Best Friend

When asked about whether she goes jogging like Madonna, Cher answered, "You mean like my best friend, Madonna?" That's when everyone knew the feud was real. Cher had made it clear that she didn't like Madonna. But here, she sort of gave the media the go signal to pit them against each other more.

In the same interview, she also explained what she really thought about Madonna when she said she was mean. "I think she's unbelievably creative. 'Cause she's not unbelievably talented, she's not beautiful. But she's kind of rude."

Cher Said Madonna's "Not Really A Great Great Singer"

Cher was once asked in an interview about her thoughts on Madonna's controversial projects. When asked if she thought the Like a Virgin singer was taking it too far, she said, "I've seen her book [Madonna's photo book, Sex]. I thought some of the pictures were really interesting and really beautiful. And I thought some of the pictures were silly."

At least Cher has made it a habit to start off by giving a few compliments about Madonna's work ethic before throwing her some major shade. She also added, "I think she's a major major star. She's not really a great, great singer. She's not really a great, great actress, but she's one of the biggest stars in the world. So that's special art—to be able to turn whatever you have into—it's like spinning straw into gold."

Cher Said She Got A Colonic To Celebrate Madonna's Birthday

On Cher's Watch What Happens Live appearance, Andy Cohen read Cher's answer to a fan asking how she celebrated Madonna's birthday. Again, causing a stir, her answer was a plain "I got a colonic." Cher laughed out loud after Andy had read the tweet, but she also made it clear, "I'm totally good with Madonna. Madge and I have gone through our thing, but I'm totally good with her. But come on, it [tweet] was funny."

Despite the many harsh things Cher has said about Madonna, the two icons have eventually found a way to patch things up. It seems like they left all the drama behind in 2017 when they were spotted joining forces for the Women's March in Washington. It was an event held after the inauguration of their common enemy, Donald Trump. Both Cher and Madonna have been vocal about not liking Trump.

So that's one less feud between two amazing female artists. Cher has even gone from shading Madonna on Twitter to addressing her with a nickname and cheering her on. We'd like to think it's their hate for Trump that made them closer. Two strong female pop legends using their platforms to promote equality and justice? We can't help but stan.
