Crazy Rich Asians was a mega-hit at the box office, grossing more than $238 million worldwide.
The romantic comedy featured an all-Asian cast, yet actress Brenda Song claims she wasn’t deemed “Asian enough” to even audition.
At least that’s what she says.
3 Song's Side Of The Story
Song told Teen Vogue, “A lot of people don't know this, but I never got to read for Crazy Rich Asians, ever. Their reasoning behind that, what they said was that my image was basically not Asian enough, in not so many words. It broke my heart.”
2 Director Denies It
Jon M. Chu, the director of Crazy Rich Asians has his side of the story. He put out a tweet in response to Song’s accusation, writing, “Would these words ever come out of my mouth? Nope makes no sense. I feel horrible she thinks this is the reason. The fact is I love Brenda Song and am a fan. I didn’t need her to audition because I already knew who she was!” Guess he didn’t love her enough to cast her in the movie.
1 Life Goes On
While being in the film surely would have boosted Song’s career, she’s still plenty famous, with roles in The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, The Suite Life on Deck, Dollface, and other TV shows and movies.
