TikToker Addison Rae has shot to fame over the past year for her short-format dance routines and bubbly online presence.

Rae first managed to move beyond her social media roots when she befriended Kourtney Kardashian, landing a cameo on the reality TV star's hit series. From there, the Louisiana native has only continued her upward career trajectory, first with the release of her music single, "Obsessed" in March and then with her first-ever acting spot in the Netflix movie He's All That.

The genderswapped reimagining of the 1990s classic She's All That debuted on the streaming service in August to mixed critical reception but widespread commercial success. According to Netflix, the Mark-Waters-directed remake reached number one in 78 countries following its release.

The TikTok sensation's quick rise to celebrity status hasn't been without criticism, however. Many Twitter users recently took to the platform in outrage after it emerged that Rae had signed a deal with the streaming giant to star in and executive-produce multiple future projects. Speaking to Variety about the opportunity, she said, "Getting to work with Netflix was such a pinch me moment and now to be able to continue the relationship is beyond my wildest dreams."

One fan suggested that the success of Rae's acting debut has more to do with a phenomenon dubbed "hate watching" than the movie's genuine entertainment value. They wrote, "a quick reminder that Netflix does this willingly knowing Addison Rae can't act for s***. They have found a sustainable market in 'hate watching' and as long as you people watch the movie just to make fun of her you're just making Netflix opt for content like this".

Meanwhile, another user wrote, "I'm unsubscribing from Netflix now," and a third tweeted, "nobody asked for this". It comes as Rae is also being trolled online about the recent news that she will be among the celebrities in attendance at this year's Met Gala. Fans believe that the burgeoning actress's path to success has been too easy, with one account tweeting, "I have never seen a finer example of what white privilege can do for someone in this industry."

Another wrote, "I think Addison Rae's agent blackmailed a Hollywood executive. That's the only logical explanation for her career."

Regardless of the internet's general feeling towards Rae, she doesn't appear to be stopping any time soon. Alongside the star's future long-term affiliation with Netflix, she has also recently launched a beauty line with the cosmetic giants Sephora. And He's All That is continuing to rack up views. It's estimated to have been streamed by 55 million households within just one month of its release.
