The #AdoptPureLove campaign is trying to encourage everyone to adopt a shelter pet and has tapped some big names to help do it too.
There are almost certainly enough shelter pets that nobody out there should ever have to buy a dog or cat from a breeder. And yet people keep buying pets for absolutely no reason.
Why is it for no reason? Because shelter dogs love you more. How do we know? Because celebrities said so.
“Before adopting Chance and Frankie, I had no idea the amazing impact that rescue dogs could have on my life,” says actress Olivia Munn. “They opened my eyes to pet adoption. There are millions of shelter pets waiting for a loving home and millions of potential pet owners who may not realize the unconditional love, joy, and companionship a shelter pet can bring to their lives. I’m excited to share our story and encourage people to choose adoption.”
Munn’s dogs, Frankie and Chance, are little bundles of love that you just can’t get from a breeder. Dogs that have always known comfort can be spoiled, but dogs adopted from a shelter know the sorrow of loneliness and love their new families all the more because of it.
That's not true. All dogs are full of unconditional love. But leaving them in a cage at a shelter is just a waste of all the love and joy that dog can bring.
Logan Ryan of the Tennessee Titans adopted a pair of pitties, Leo and Julius, which he says were a perfect fit for his home. “Leo and Julius bring the exact amount of goofiness and joy that I need after a hard-fought football game,” the NFL cornerback said. “I adopted them thinking I was going to help them but they truly helped me more. They fill my home with unconditional love.”
Dogs don’t always need to be adopted in pairs. If your home only has enough room for one lovebug, then that’s okay too. “My shelter dog Wiley is a cuddly ball of energy. She brightens my day and adds meaning to my life,” said actress Rachel Bloom. “Shelter pets each have their own personalities and endearing quirks. There really is a shelter pet for everyone.”
We don’t really need encouragement to adopt a pet: what we need is an easy way of seeing what pets are available for adoption. That’s why #AdoptPureLove is brought to you by the Shelter Pet Project, a collaborative effort from the Ad Council, Humane Society of America, and Maddie’s Fund.
But more importantly, it’s a website. On TheShelterPetProject.com, you can search an online database of pets just waiting to be adopted. Click on “learn more about me” to get a profile of the potential dog or car as well as contact info for the shelter where they’re currently being housed. Then contact the shelter to arrange a meeting and to see if that pet is right for you.
