The actor revealed that getting on the sitcom completely changed his career at the time, as he was headed in the opposite direction.

"I was just happy to be out of my cave of depression. I'd been writing really, really bizarre scripts. Weird kids' movies about talking horses. I was slowly descending into madness."

Segel would reveal however that down the road, the job became similar to a 9 to 5, something he wanted to avoid as an actor. "But when you become an actor, part of it, the secret part of it, is that you don't want to work a regular 9-to-5 job. And the secret part of a TV show is that it's a 9-to-5 job. ... When your idol is Peter Sellers, playing one character for eight years isn't what you're trying to do. I don't really feel like I have that much more to offer with this character."

When his time on the show came to an end, Segel made some major changes in both his work and personal life.

Jason Segel Left The Comedy Genre Behind In Recent Years

Segel further revealed that after Sex Tape, it was time to look at different genres and projects.

Sex Tape ended up doing well, I think, but it didn’t feel good. So I got to look forward and say, ‘This is freedom. You can do anything right now. So why don’t we walk right into some of the looming questions, like, what if I tried to do just a drama? What if I tried to write and create and run a TV show?’ I wanted to bump up against my litmus, which I hadn’t done in a long time.”

Not only did the actor pick different projects, but he also decided on a major change to his personal life.

Jason Segel Moved Away From LA Completely Off The Map

Realization set in for Segel after How I Met Your Mother that he could basically do what he wanted, and that included making big decisions with his home life. Segel opted to leave the busy streets of LA and locate in a quieter town. The actor hasn't regretted the decision.

"I like being in a small town. Like, I go to the high school football games and stuff and eat a sandwich, which I didn't know if you could do without kids, but you can," he joked. "And I go to the Christmas play in town and I wait outside and ask little kids to sign my playbill. It's really fun. I love it."

The actor would further explain alongside Jimmy Kimmel that living in the small farm town caused him to get noticed a lot less, and navigating life became a lot easier away from the spotlight.

It seems like the actor is content with his current circumstances, though fans will always wonder if he'll accept a return for a tenth season on How I Met Your Mother.
