The Twitter thread was brought upon by Donald Trump’s niece, Mary L. Trump, who tweeted on Saturday, “Alan Rickman should have gotten an Academy Award for his performance in the last Harry Potter movie.”

Aside from his work on the Harry Potter series, Rickman also starred in other blockbuster flicks including Alice in Wonderland, Sweeney Todd, Robin Hood, Die Hard, Alice Through The Looking Glass, and Love Actually.

Considering his impressive credentials, the discussion of why and how Rickman was never awarded an Oscar quickly picked up steam thanks to Trump, prompting Rickman’s name to trend.

The last time Rickman was trending on Twitter was when an excerpt of an interview he had previously done with Empire resurfaced of him admitting he was close to quitting the wizarding franchise after the first two movies.

Apparently, Rickman felt like his character, Snape, was an “unchanging costume.”

But after a conversation with J.K. Rowling, the latter was able to convince him to stay on board, promising that there was much more in store for Snape.

It should be noted that at the time that Rickman wanted to leave, Rowling had only released a handful of the Harry Potter books, so there was a lot of mystery around how things would progress moving forward.

“Three children have become adults since a phone call with Jo Rowling, containing one small clue, persuaded me that there was more to Snape than an unchanging costume and that even though only three of the books were out at that time, she held the entire massive but delicate narrative in the surest of hands,” Rickman told Empire.

“It is an ancient need to be told stories. But the story needs a great storyteller. Thanks for all of it, Jo.”
