There's been plenty of investigation into what the cast has been up to in the years since the 'American Pie' franchise ended.

Fans know that Alyson Hannigan spent, like, forever on 'How I Met Your Mother,' Tara Reid has drawn fans' attention for all the wrong reasons, and Jason Biggs has more or less remained in the spotlight.

But what about Chris Klein? In 1999, Chris Klein was an up-and-coming actor. In 2000, he was in a film with Josh Hartnett and LeeLee Sobieski (talk about a '90s nostalgia throwback). After that, he starred in a Mel Gibson film.

Of course, Chris also hopped back into the 'American Pie' fray for the second film and 'American Reunion' in 2012. But he wasn't in 'American Wedding.'

And from 2000 to 2005, Chris dated Katie Holmes. The pair were even engaged, but that fizzled out (and Katie married Tom Cruise the year after their breakup). By all accounts, Katie went on to become an even bigger star during and post-marriage to Tom than she was on 'Dawson's Creek.'

But what happened with Chris Klein's career, and why did his upward trajectory come crashing down?

Following his role in Mel Gibson's movie 'We Were Soldiers,' Chris tackled a handful of roles in teen films.

But while he was fading from Hollywood's view, Chris was battling personal demons off the screen. In both 2005 and 2010, Chris Klein was arrested for drunk driving. As People reported, Chris voluntarily checked himself into rehab after the second offense.

Chris's publicist gave this statement: "He thanks everyone for their support as he takes all the necessary steps to deal with his addiction and asks for privacy while doing so."

Afterward, Chris would say, "the me that I knew was slipping away," noted MEAWW. And at that point, acting didn't even matter to the former heartthrob.

It would seem that it took Chris a few years to get his personal life sorted out. But during that time, he'd meet his future wife, Laina, whom he married in 2015. The two have two children, a son and daughter, and by the looks of Chris's Instagram, life is bliss for the family.

Chris would also star in the 2014 indie comedy 'Authors Anonymous.' That role placed him alongside Kaley Cuoco on the big screen. It wasn't enough to re-start Chris' rise to fame, though. That wouldn't happen until 2018, when Chris was cast as the villain on TV's 'The Flash.'

Fast forward to 2020 and Chris is acting in the Netflix series 'Sweet Magnolias' alongside Jamie Lynn Spears, JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Brooke Elliot, and others.

Who knows: 'Sweet Magnolias' might just be the opportunity Chris Klein needs to restart his career (and finally shed his 'American Pie' image).
