The Parks and Rec star’s sophomore directorial feature is on Netflix.

The actress, producer and director has discussed her influences for her second feature film, including one of her favorite punk bands and a movie starring Sally Field.

Amy Poehler Is Back With ‘Moxie,’ A Feminist Tale Inspired By 'Norma Rae’

The Parks and Rec protagonist stars as Lisa, a mom with at rebellious, feminist past. Her attitude inspires her shy teen daughter Vivian (Hadley Robinson) to speak up against the sexism at her high school, where boys rank girls according to unattainable beauty standards and are the perpetrators of casual sexual harassment.

After finding out Lisa’s feminist zines, Vivian starts her own and distribute it anonymously at school, sparking a much-needed conversation.

In a clip released by Netflix, Poehler has listed what inspired her to make Moxie.

"I would say the great film Norma Rae with Sally Field was a good example of watching a young woman think that she couldn’t take on a bigger system and discovered what it meant to stand up for something,” Poehler said.

“I looked at it a lot when we were developing Moxie,” she added.

Released in 1979, Norma Rae sees Field in the titular role of a young factory worker deciding to protest the unhealthy working conditions and pushing her colleagues to unionize. Field received an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her portrayal of Norma.

Amy Poehler Was Also Inspired By This Song By Bikini Kill

Poehler also mentioned riot grrrl band Bikini Kill among her inspirations.

In the film, Vivian listens to the band and watches excerpts from a documentary on the band’s frontwoman Kathleen Hanna.

“Bikini Kill was a very influential band in the 90s,” the director said.

“Kathleen is a really interesting artist and she provided a soundtrack for what it felt like trying to make change happen and so [song Rebel Girl] is certainly something that inspired me,” she continued.

On Moxie, the original version of Rebel Girl is featured in key scenes. A cover of the song is also played by emerging teen punk band The Linda Lindas, who perform in the movie.
