At the 77th Golden Globe Awards in 2020, Ana de Armas was up for the honor of “Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.” This was for her performance as nurse Marta Cabrera in the widely acclaimed mystery crime drama film Knives Out starring Daniel Craig.

For this accolade, de Armas was going up against the likes of Cate Blanchett for Where’d You Go, Bernadette, Beanie Feldstein for Booksmart, Emma Thompson for Late Night and eventual winner Awkwafina for The Farewell.

Despite the fact that she did not emerge victorious, the nomination was recognition for de Armas’ fast rising star in Hollywood, considering she had not been playing in the very big leagues for a long time before that.

The Cuban-Spanish star had been acting since 2006, but only started to come to proper public consciousness with her performance in Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049 in 2017.

Later this year, a Knives Out sequel is set to be released on Netflix, under the title Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. De Armas previously expressed a desire to return to the franchise, which is set to include an almost completely new cast line-up.

Ana de Armas Was Not Convinced About Playing Marta Cabrera In Knives Out

Last month, Ana de Armas starred in the much-anticipated Marilyn Monroe fictionalized biographical film, Blonde. In the build-up to the release of the movie, the actress was interviewed by AnOther Magazine, about – among other things – how she ended up as part of the star-studded ensemble cast in Knives Out.

Hot on the heels of her star turn in Blade Runner 49, de Armas was approached for a role in what was then dubbed “a secret project.” The only description she got for the part she was supposed to provide an audition tape for included only two words: “Latina” and “caretaker.”

Considering the stereotypical history of those two words together in film, the actress was extremely underwhelmed and repeatedly said no to the offer.

“I was like, I do not have the energy, what is this?” de Armas recalled, having also been in the midst of filming for the movie Sergio around that time. “I said, you either tell me why this is worth it or I can’t. I passed on it twice because of that description.”

Who Was Marta Cabrera, Ana De Armas’ Character In Knives Out?

On the official Lionsgate website, the synopsis for Knives Out reads: “When renowned crime novelist Harlan Thrombey is found dead at his estate just after his 85th birthday, the inquisitive and debonair Detective Benoit Blanc is mysteriously enlisted to investigate.”

“From Harlan's dysfunctional family to his devoted staff, Blanc sifts through a web of red herrings and self-serving lies to uncover the truth behind Harlan's untimely death.” Christopher Plummer and James Bond star Daniel Craig played those two central characters, as Harlan Thrombey and Detective Benoit Blanc respectively.

Ana de Armas’ nurse Marta Cabrera is described as “the daughter of an illegal immigrant, something she has told few within this sphere.” Marta is believed to have been the last person to see Harlan alive, having gone through “her evening ritual of playing a game of Go with him and administering his medication.”

It turned out to be one of those career-defining roles, but de Armas had originally dismissed it. It wasn’t until she received the complete script for the Rian Johnson film that she knew she wanted to be in it.

Will Ana De Armas Return As Marta Cabrera In The Knives Out Sequel?

In a separate interview with Vanity Fair in 2019, Ana de Armas described what her fears with the role in Knives Out was. “The [script] description said Marta was a caretaker, Latina, and pretty. That’s it. And I’m like, ‘What? I’m not doing that,” she said.

“Because for a Latina in a setup like this, with a wealthy family and this cast, all I thought was, ‘What am I going to do here?’ I’ll probably be standing in a corner, not having much to say,” she continued.

When speaking to AnOther, De Armas pointed out the exact moment when she finally changed her mind on auditioning for Marta Cabrera: “In the end, they sent me the whole script and I thought, ‘Oh shit!’ Right away I did an audition.”

So fulfilling was the role for the 34-year-old actress, that she expressed a strong desire to return to it in Glass Onion. Unfortunately, that does not seem likely to happen: Daniel Craig is the only confirmed returnee, and a whole new batch of characters have been brought on board for the sequel.
