Ana de Armas Did Not Anticipate Getting The Role Of Marilyn Monroe In Blonde

Released in late September, reviews are mixed for the film, Blonde. Ana de Armas is receiving some huge critical acclaim for her portrayal of Marilyn Monroe, however, the overall reviews seem to be mixed at best for the film.

Nonetheless, it is receiving huge fanfare. The star Ana de Armas is still taken aback by the role, especially considering it was never something she had on her radar.

The actress explained alongside the LA Times, “On paper I was not supposed to be playing Marilyn Monroe. I’m a Cuban actress. In what world could I have imagined that this was going to happen? Never. The fact that I got this opportunity was just something out of the ordinary.”

Ana de Armas wanted to ensure that the woman aspect was brought to life in the film, and not just her superstardom. This aspect was evident during the audition process, and it blew the casting crew away. After her audition, it is said that the film really came to life.

Ana de Armas had a hard time describing what she felt the first time her makeup was done for the role. However, she does recall everyone's reaction, as the room completely broke down.

The actress recalled alongside Today, “Everyone in the room started crying, I can tell you that,” she said. “It was very emotional. It felt like she was back.”

Of course, that was only half the battle, as Ana de Armas wanted to put on a memorable performance. Among her priorities, included showing a different side of Monroe, one that the fans did not see behind the scenes during her moments of fame.

“I feel like the movie shows the other side of that and the price that you pay for that,” she explained during her Today interview.

“People wanted Marilyn, they wanted that product. She had to keep delivering that because the opposite was nothing. She was nothing else. She was not considered anything else.”

Given such a deep character which contained so many layers, disconnecting from it was no easy task.

Getting Out Character Was Not An Easy Process For Ana de Armas

The project was an emotional one for de Armas. Although she didn't say in character between takes and after the shoots, she revealed that the emotions still carried with her.

"Don't get me wrong, I had so much fun. I wasn't by any means in character for nine weeks, not between takes, not in my lunch break. I was Ana. But emotionally? The weight of it stayed with me for sure," she said.

The actress continued, "I don't want it to seem like I'm saying, 'Marilyn and I were connected'—not at all. But I was thinking of her so much, some days I would go home and have dinner and as I was washing the dishes I would just start sobbing, crying and crying, because I had this terrible feeling—I knew I couldn't fix it."

Clearly, unplugging from the role was not an easy task but ultimately, it added to the performance, showing just how much de Armas invested into the role. Clearly, casting the actress in the role was the right call.
