The Sex and the City reboot was one of the most highly anticipated shows of 2021. Starring the original cast, with the exception of Kim Cattrall, the series reboot, entitled And Just Like That … follows the lives of Carrie, Charlotte, and Miranda as they navigate their middle-aged years in a post-pandemic New York City.

The show has received mixed reviews, with many fans calling it out for straying too far from its roots and destroying the career of Miranda Hobbes.

While other fans have praised the show for being original and more realistic than its predecessor, the majority of viewers seem to be united in at least one opinion: that there’s one character on the show who is the absolute worst.

There are quite a few new characters on And Just Like That… and not all of them have been well-received. Find out which character fans hate with a passion and why.

‘And Just Like That…’

And just like that … our favorite characters from Sex and the City are back! Carrie, Charlotte, and Miranda have returned (sadly, without Samantha) to continue their journeys in the 2021 reboot And Just Like That … Starring the original actors, the show follows the lives of the women in post-pandemic New York City as they deal with the struggles of middle-aged life.

In the series, Carrie is suddenly left single again after Mr. Big dies from a heart attack in the first episode. Charlotte struggles to be the perfect mom while Miranda is unhappy in her marriage to Steve.

While Kim Cattrall didn’t return to reprise her role as Samantha Jones, there are several new characters on the show. Along with Professor Nya Wallace, played by Karen Pittman, Seema Patel, played by Sarita Choudhury, and Lisa Todd Wexley, played by Nicole Ari Parker, the show also welcomes the arrival of Che Diaz, played by Sara Ramirez.

The Character Fans Hate

Che Diaz has received the most backlash out of the new characters on And Just Like That… Carrie’s boss and a comedian who is Irish-Mexican, queer, and nonbinary, Che has been referred to by some fans as “the worst TV character in a decade.”

Why Fans Hate Che Diaz

There has been so much hate for the character of Che online that several articles have surfaced trying to explain it. Many sources suggest that Che was “cringe” to watch because they felt like they were inserted into the show to make up for the original Sex and the City’s lack of diversity.

In the show, Miranda discovers that she is queer after falling in love with Che. This instigates a series of events that leads to Miranda cheating on Steve with Che and then eventually leaving him to be with them.

For fans who love Steve, or Miranda and Steve together, Che seems like the ultimate villain.

Some fans have also taken issue with the fact that Che feels like they are there for the purpose of awakening Miranda, who was a formerly straight main character.

The Daily Beast writes that one of the biggest problems with Che is that they are unhinged: “The instruction to Miranda to ‘DM me’ if she wants to hang out again. It’s hard to put into words the vibe, other than to say the vibe is unsettling. Every time someone calls Miranda “Rambo,” an angel loses their wings.”

The Defense Of Che Diaz

While many fans don’t like Che Diaz, some have come forward to defend them. Grazia Daily writes that it’s important to acknowledge the authenticity in Che’s character, as Sara Ramirez “had a strong hand in creating” the character.

“Ultimately, I like Che as a character because they feel like the bold, forceful love Miranda never had,” the publication explains. “Their confidence matches Miranda, their dominance excites her and their freedom and spontaneity clearly makes her feel like she can be her true self.”

The publication goes on to explain that it’s rare that queer and nonbinary characters appear on television “at their greatest point of peace—celebrated and loved by everyone around them.”

What Sara Ramirez Has Said

Sara Ramirez is aware that the response to Che has not been overly positive. They have revealed that they are proud of the representation that Che brings to the show, and have decided to protect their mental health and artistry rather than buy into the online hate.

“We have built a character who is a human being, who is imperfect, who’s complex, who is not here to be liked, who’s not here for anybody’s approval,” Ramirez went on. “They’re here to be themselves.”

Criticism Of Miranda

Along with Che, Miranda has also received extensive criticism after her role in the new series. Fans of the Sex and the City are not happy with the fact that Miranda cheats on Steve and then leaves him after all the two went through together in the original series.

Fans have also noted that Miranda doesn’t consider Steve’s feelings when she tells him about Che, even though she is justified in asking for a divorce, and perceives him to be a boring man despite the fact that he was the love of her life in the original series.

Some fans also feel that Miranda is unfair to Che by not telling them that she’s in a closed marriage to Steve when she starts sleeping with them.
