A new GUESS photoshoot put Sydney Sweeney front and center for the brand, but that wasn't all it set out to do. For one thing, Sydney's images were meant to recall memories of the late Anna Nicole Smith, in terms of the style and the aesthetic (black and white snaps and blond curls, obviously).

The thing is, the campaign wasn't exactly a hit with every fan, either of Sydney or Anna Nicole.

Sydney was trolled on social media for what some say is a lack of resemblance to the late reality TV star and model, though others would argue that looks weren't really the point. The choice of model for the photoshoot wasn't the only concern that fans had, though.

Anna Nicole Smith Appeared In New GUESS Ads

As GUESS explained, the Sydney Sweeney photoshoot and new ad campaign was for a GUESS x Anna Nicole Smith "collab." The campaign involved never-released photos of the late star and was apparently endorsed by Larry Birkhead, Anna Nicole's daughter's dad.

Clearly, being the person who oversees Dannielynn's inheritance, Larry has control over Anna Nicole's image. Not everyone thought he made the right choice with GUESS, though.

The Campaign Tagline Was "Did You Miss Me?"

One of the things that rubbed fans the wrong way with the new campaign? The tagline splashed over the Anna billboards and in ads literally read "Did you miss me?"

While some fans recognized the intent, and gushed all over GUESS's social media with praise like "What an incredible tribute," there were some naysayers that didn't like the sentiment. After all, of course fans miss Smith, and so does her family.

As Larry Birkhead told an interviewer, Dannielynn used to get excited to into GUESS stores and see her mom's photos. So, he elaborated, "For me, quite honestly, if not one person were to buy the items [from the collection] but Dannielynn gets to see a billboard or a beautiful picture of her mom, then this campaign is worth it."

It sounds sweet, and tons of fans were on board. But others thought the whole thing was more of a money grab than a true tribute to Anna Nicole.

What Does Larry Birkhead Think Of Critics?

Though Larry seemed to acknowledge that not everyone understood his motivation for letting GUESS use Anna Nicole Smith's image, he reinforced that he was mostly doing it for his daughter.

There's also more to the campaign than just a heartwarming revival of her mom's career for Dannielynn.

Larry was also quoted as saying, "This GUESS campaign is just the beginning." It seems he has big plans for Dannielynn to keep remembering her mom in big ways; "I hope one day it’s a brand that Dannielynn will want to manage and bring her vision on board to keep Anna’s memory alive in a positive way."

It seems the GUESS campaign is a great start, because it's already selling really well.

Dannielynn Has Modeled For GUESS, Too

Another interesting fact about Anna Nicole's career? Her daughter sort of followed in her footsteps. Years ago, Dannielynn Birkhead had the opportunity to model kids' fashion for GUESS, so Larry signed her up.

The campaign earned her a decent payday (though reportedly the same amount of cash as her kiddie co-models), but it doesn't seem that Dannielynn really loved being in the spotlight. In fact, she seems like a very normal teen, despite her mom's glamorous legacy.

It's interesting that she hasn't continued modeling, though it's possible that critics who commented on the little girl being in the spotlight at that point had some influence on the decision. Nowadays, though, it seems like Dannielynn is happy being somewhat behind the scenes but making big decisions about what happens with her mom's story.

Fans Are Loving The New GUESS Collection

Billboards aside, most fans are loving the revived GUESS collection inspired by '90s-era Anna Nicole. In fact, on social media, fans were clamoring for the styles that Sydney Sweeney donned for her ANS-lookalike photoshoot.

And as Larry explained, the collab includes everything from hoodies to bags to throwback looks that Anna herself might have worn.

There's basically something for everyone, and enough people who were fans of Anna (Larry explains that true fans are always clamoring for memorabilia of Anna's heyday) are snatching up the goods.

Clearly, Anna Nicole's name is continuing to make money for her daughter, and that's one of Larry's motivations for the collabs. But he's also developing what could turn into a whole career for his kid, and that's a smart move, too.
