Fans have a lot of weird theories about Anne Hathaway, but some of the fodder for fans comes from things the actress has said herself. In one case, she outright called herself a nerd in an interview, for a very specific reason.

Fans aren't quite convinced that she's a true nerd, though.

Anne Hathaway Claimed She's A Nerd Because Of One Habit

When Hathaway appeared on 'The Daily Show' with Jon Stewart a few years ago, she declared that she's a nerd for one specific reason. It was likely an effort to engage with the audience, as Anne was directing her comments at them, first asking "So these are the nerds"? and then exclaiming, "my people!"

When Jon asked whether Anne had any "nerdly pursuits," Anne said she did. Apparently, Hathaway considers being a "Scrabble fiend" a very nerd-worthy pursuit, and she proudly declared that on stage.

Recalling the moment on Reddit, fans didn't quite agree. The original commenter who shared the series of stills from the show distinctly disagreed, captioning their post "No Anne Hathaway, that does not count."

Some fans disagreed, though, and went on to argue over the specific definition of "nerd" and in what contexts the term can change. One pointed out, "Scrabble is very nerdy, just analog nerdy."

Another agreed that Scrabble is nerdy, "As well as chess, puzzle solving, dungeons and dragons, science, math, fantasy novels, and cosplay."

But not every fan wholeheartedly agreed, and some felt like Anne was trying to be relatable in a way that she, as a generally glamorous celebrity, really isn't.

So Is Anne Hathaway Really A True "Nerd"?

Many fans took issue with Anne saying she was nerdy, mostly based on the fact that she equates enjoying word puzzles with being a true nerd. Apparently some folks took offense at her attempting to break into the niche that is nerdiness, as Redditors' comments suggest.

One commenter noted, "Let's get real though, while it is subjective, Scrabble is nowhere near as nerdy as something like D&D or cosplay." Which might be the general consensus of the Reddit population that is A. made up of self-proclaimed nerds and B. cares about what Anne Hathaway has to say/her celebrity.

Some fans admitted they didn't much care what definition Anne had in mind when she made her nerd status known; "IMO: Scrabble is a nerdly pursuit. Especially if Anne wants it to be." Fair enough, superfan.

Of course, this wasn't the worst interview Anne's ever participated in, even if she did offend true nerds. Remember her really tough-to-watch interview with Matt Lauer? We wish we could forget.
