Not everyone loves Anne Hathaway, and even her biggest fans understand. But most can agree that in the case of one film mishap, Hathaway shouldn't have to apologize for the mess up.

She's had thoughts on other films that she's acted in, and in some cases, Anne disagrees with viewers. For one thing, Hathaway didn't entirely agree with fans' designating Nate the "villain" in 'The Devil Wears Prada.'

But with other film projects, she admits that the characters weren't always handled properly. Case in point? Her role as the Grand High Witch in 'The Witches.'

Some Viewers Were Unhappy With 'The Witches'

Though fans loved Anne Hathaway's portrayal of the Grand High Witch in 'The Witches,' there was some backlash. Once the film was released, social media users pointed out a significant problem with how the witches were depicted.

In the original book, they note, the witches were described as having claws. But as fans recall, Anne's character has CGI-generated fingers; only three, and they look long and somewhat claw-like.

The problem is that real people can have fingers that appear similar, due to a condition called ectrodactyly. The bottom line, noted people with limb differences and advocates for inclusion, is that the film equated a limb difference with being "evil" or "abnormal."

Fans Think Anne Hathaway Shouldn't Apologize

While many viewers admit that advocates for limb difference have a point, they also say it's not Anne's burden to carry. Instead, they say, the director or costume designer -- the people in charge -- should have to apologize.

Warner Bros did issue a public statement, but it was less of an apology and more of a defensive statement. In essence, they said they were "deeply saddened" that the depiction "could upset" people and "regretted any offence caused."

If that doesn't sound like a brushoff, they further stated: "It was never the intention for viewers to feel that the fantastical, non-human creatures were meant to represent them."

So while fans of the film (and Hathaway) think that Warner Bros should apologize, the overall lack of apology in their apology might have meant that Anne felt she had to pick up the slack.

Still, it's not her burden to shoulder, maintain fans, because Warner Bros and all their creative folks should've known better. But one thing they would like to have an apology for, fans note, is Anne Hathaway's role in 'Catwoman.'

Though she's had some memorable roles, fans clearly don't appreciate some of them -- but 'The Witches' is the least of their worries.
