Onscreen couples may come and go, but Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore’s movie romance never gets old. The Hollywood stars first met on the set of the 90s hit The Wedding Singer (after Barrymore supposedly begged to work with the comedian). After working together on the hit movie, Sandler and Barrymore have become very good friends (they’ve even been pictured together several times), so much so that they’ve collaborated frequently over the years. So far, Sandler and Barrymore have done two other movies together, most recently the 2014 romantic comedy Blended. Since then, however, the two stars have been busy with their separate projects (interestingly though, both had been busy with Netflix). With Sandler’s tendency to collaborate frequently with friends though, does that mean

Drew And Adam Had Onscreen Chemistry From The Start

Initially, The Wedding Singer wasn’t supposed to be a romantic movie. As writer Tim Herlihy recalled, Sandler “had an idea to do a story about a wedding singer who's left at the altar...and I wanted to do a movie set in the '80s. So we thought, 'Wait a minute—what if we do this story set in the '80s?' That was kind of the genesis of it."

“But then, the movie “just kind of got romantic” and that meant they had to have a leading lady too. That’s when Barrymore came in.

“We were very excited to meet her, and immediately, you just knew Drew was gonna be a person who the world—not just America—but the world was gonna fall in love with,” director Frank Coraci said of the actress.

And once Barrymore and Sandler started working together, he also “saw their chemistry right away.”

“That's what I think, for me, made the movie really amazing,” Coraci added. “There were so many moments to it, but the fact that they bonded like friends is what made you believe...that [Robbie and Julia] falling in love is legitimate.”

50 First Dates Rode On The Wedding Singer's Coattails

Following the success of The Wedding Singer (it earned over $120 million at the box office), Barrymore and Sandler reunited a few years later for the dramedy 50 First Dates. The film tells the story of a man named Henry (Sandler) who falls for a woman (Barrymore) suffering from short-term memory loss.

For Barrymore, working with Sandler previously helped her tackle her character and the film itself better.

“We got to know each other. We’re older now, and we’ve known each other favor a long time. We’ve remained friends through that,” she told ComingSoon.

“I think that only actually helped us do these characters who are in different places, who are different people, who are at different times in their lives.”

Several years later, Sandler and Barrymore also reteamed for Blended where their characters fall in love after they get stuck at a resort with their families. As always, the onscreen chemistry between the two stars was undeniable but Barrymore pointed out that it has also evolved over the years.

“I would sum it up with respect. It all stems from respect,” Barrymore said. “I’ve always respected him. I love him. He makes us laugh.”

Sandler added, “I love Drew. I’ve known her for a long time. In all three movies, we’ve had the pleasure of falling in love.”

Adam Sandler And Drew Barrymore Have Talked About Doing A Fourth Movie Together

Since Blended though, it seems Barrymore and Sandler haven’t found the time to team up once more. That said, fans will be glad to know that the stars have been keeping in touch.

“We just talked on the phone the other day,” Barrymore even told People back in 2019.

Looking back, the actress even credits Sandler for her Hollywood success, so much so that there’s an entire chapter in her book, Wildflower, that’s dedicated to him. “It’s a little bit of a love letter to him because I have grown with this person.”

Will Drew And Adam Make Another Film Together?

And as for reuniting onscreen again, Barrymore assures fans that there’s “more to go.”

“We always get like a time and an instinct thing,” the actress explained. “We’ve done it three times now, so we know we have more to go.”

Barrymore also talked about doing another movie with Sandler during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen.

“Adam and I have done a movie every 10 years, three decades in a row,” the actress pointed out. “You cannot mess with that. We will do our 10-year at 40. We just haven’t figured out what it is yet.”

Back in 2020, Sandler and Barrymore reunited virtually to receive the award for Greatest of All Time Dynamic Duo at the 2020 MTV Movie & TV Awards.

At one point, Sandler informed Barrymore that it was already 2020 and that means “it's a new decade so we get to make another movie together.”

Barrymore, of course, was all for it, so long as they can “find something amazing.”
