The world of television has always been full of interesting pairings, whether it’s drama, comedy, or even a crime procedural. Having played a vampire who becomes romantically involved with a vampire slayer (Sarah Michelle Gellar) in Buffy and Angel in his early years, David Boreanaz was certainly no stranger to the concept that opposites attract.Hence, when he was paired with Emily Deschanel in the Fox crime show Bones, it wasn’t exactly new territory for him.RELATED: The Real Reason David Boreanaz Was Cast On 'Buffy The Vampire Slayer'That said, it was the Buffalo native’s first time acting opposite Deschanel who was a relatively new actress at that time (prior to Bones, she only had a handful of small roles in tv and film). That said, when they first appeared onscreen together, their chemistry was undeniable. It also seemed like they’ve known each other a long time. And now, years after the show was canceled, fans wonder what’s happened to Boreanaz and Deschanel’s relationship behind the scenes.

Emily Deschanel Was Brought In To Read After David Boreanaz Was Already Cast

Having proven his acting chops on Buffy and Angel, Boreanaz didn’t even have to audition for his role on Bones. In fact, Fox Television’s then-boss, Dana Walden, even personally suggested that the actor play cocky FBI agent Seeley Booth.

After years of playing a vampire (which he enjoyed completely), Boreanaz felt that Bones gave him the opportunity to try something different. And once he signed on, it was then up to creator Hart Hanson to find someone that would equally match Boreanaz’s presence onscreen. In the end, Hanson shortlisted two actresses, one of which was Deschanel.

At that time, however, few knew of the actress and Hanson wondered if she could go “toe-to-toe” with Boreanaz as the role required. After one chemistry read, it became clear that Deschanel could. “Emily pulled into the front position for me…,” Hanson recalled.

But then, Deschanel also had to prove that she could match Boreanaz’s onscreen presence to the network. And when she read with the actor once more, Deschanel made it clear she could hold her own.

“There was this moment with David and Emily where he stepped toward her. He just steps toward Emily, and Booth was trying to establish himself as the alpha with Brennan, and she just steps toward him,” Hanson explained. “It sounds like a simple thing, but it was her instinct, and it was electric.”

More importantly, Hanson realized that the two had incredible chemistry. "Everyone in that room was a pro, and knew chemistry when they saw it—I didn’t have to make any argument at all. It was obvious they had this chemistry,” he remarked. “Chemistry is impossible to find.”

Boreanaz and Deschanel’s chemistry continued to get stronger over the years, which is probably due to the good working relationship they had established behind the scenes. For the two stars, the key was to learn to understand each other better.

“We spent more time with each other than we did with our own spouses — with anybody else, really — and we fully acknowledged that we would drive each other crazy,” Deschanel explained.

“We gave each other permission to walk away at different times, or just say ‘you’re really bothering me right now,’ or ‘you’re annoying me, I have to get away from you.’ And we rarely used that because we gave each other permission, and we talked about it.”

The Co-Stars Once Sued Fox Together

As the show went on, both Boreanaz and Deschanel went on to also serve as producers on the show. And while they may have also received significant raises in the latter seasons (Deschanel, for one, was reportedly paid $250,000 per episode), the two stars still felt like Fox had ultimately short-changed them.

In 2015, the actors, along with the show’s bosses and Temperance Brennan novels author Kathy Reichs, filed a case against Fox, alleging that they have been defrauded by the network when it came to their proper profit participation from the show especially following the deals it had struck for rights to broadcast or stream the Emmy-nominated show.

Several years later, Fox eventually reached a settlement with its former stars with Boreanaz and Deschanel being awarded $170 million in damages.

Are David Boreanaz And Emily Deschanel Still In Touch?

It appears the answer to this question is yes. In fact, during an Instagram Live session with fans in 2020, Boreanaz revealed that he had just spoken with his former co-star. That said, it is unclear if they had managed to see each other in person since both actors had been busy with other shows since Bones.

Meanwhile, while it seems that a Bones reboot would never happen, there may just be another way for Boreanaz and Deschanel to reunite onscreen again. In fact, Boreanaz appears to be open to having his former co-star do a guest appearance on his current show, the action-drama SEAL Team.

“I’m sure she would love to…,” Boreanaz answered when asked about Deschanel showing up in the series. SEAL Team is currently filming its sixth season and as fans of the show may know, anything is possible.
