Arnold Schwarzenegger had a different plan. He wanted to become more than a bodybuilder and he set out to dominate Hollywood. He was doing exactly that out of the gate, getting his film career started in the '70s, and in the '80s he released some classic films like 'Conan the Barbarian', and of course, 'Terminator'.

Thriving with that genre of film wasn't enough for Arnold, he wanted to establish himself as someone that can do it all, including comedy. That's when the film 'Twins' came around.

Arnold wanted to prove himself in the film and it came at a price... literally nothing. Arnold wasn't paid much for the gig but we can safely say that it all worked out to his advantage. We'll take a look at how the film did at the box office along with his impressions of the movie. Finally, we'll take a look at what he made from the project, the answer is very surprising.

Arnold Had A Blast With The Film

Arnold along with Danny DeVito bet on their own talent ahead of the film. Arnold was completely green when it came to comedy, however, that didn't stop the film from becoming a huge success. It scored big at the box office, bringing in $216 million.

Arnold enjoyed his time on the film, so much so that he told Collider he's considering a sequel, "I would love to do another Twins. As a matter of fact, we’ve been talking about doing one and it’s called Triplets. I’d find somebody like Eddie Murphy or someone [laughs] that people would say, “How does that happen, medically speaking?” and, “Physically, there’s no way.” Then somehow we would explain it. That would be hilarious with what we know about someone like him. You’ve got to find people that in, real life, people laugh about them and whatever we know about them that makes you laugh. I can see a poster, a billboard, with us three…"

”They found another one. Triplets. Only their mother can tell them apart.” I would do that in two seconds, because that’s real entertainment. You come out with that movie for Christmas, like December 5th or something like that, and you’re home free, just like with the other one."

Although Arnold had a blast with the project, it came at a big-time risk for his career. Not only was it his first comedy, but Arnold basically took nothing as a salary in an attempt to prove himself.

Taking No Money

At the time, Hollywood was only interested in casting Arnold in an action role and nothing else. It was a given that Arnold in the action genre would be a score but the same wasn't true for a try at comedy. Arnold wanted to diversify and he ultimately took no salary to be in 'Twins'

The gamble definitely worked out quite well as Arnold did made some great bonuses thanks to the crazy revenue the film brought in, "Literally for 'Twins' I took no salary — I just wanted to give it a shot. And it just happened to be my first movie to make $100 million domestic. So they realized that it works, Schwarzenegger can cross over."

Arnold still looks back at the role fondly, calling it among the top of his storied career, "There are a few characters, Twins or Kindergarten Cop or True Lies or Predator, those characters are very memorable characters. They’re interesting characters. I could never pick one over the other. How could you pick the Twins character over the True Lies character? Which one is better? I don’t think there’s such a thing. Both are very entertaining in the way they were directed and written and how I tried to play it out."

For Arnold, films like 'Twins' showed his softer side, something he had a blast doing, unlike his serious roles, "Whatever character it is, you have to always show some humanity and a little twinkle of being able to step back and have fun with it and make fun of yourself a little bit and not to take it too seriously. Some people picked up on that over the years, that my films always have…I’ve always tried to put this extra thing in the movie, some of myself in there. Making fun of the character, even though maybe it was an intense movie, but it’s something they’ll like rather than trying to be too serious all the time."

Arnold bet on himself and he hit it out of the park.
