There are few reality competition TV shows that can boast anywhere near the kind of success that CBS' Survivor has enjoyed in its 22-year existence. Over the course of 41 seasons and 609 episodes, the series has been recognized with multiple Emmy and Golden Globe awards, among others.

A total of 608 contestants have participated in the competition in that period of time. One of those is recent alum Tyson Apostol, who has a new tell-all podcast about the show titled The Pod Has Spoken.

Among the rest, the law of averages dictates that there are some who will be fan favorites, and those who are most disliked. At the end of the day, though, they all - as with anyone else - have one thing in common: mortality.

Since the inception of the show in 2000, a total of nine castaways have tragically passed away. We take an in-depth look at each one of them.

9 Jennifer Lyon - Season 10 ('Survivor: Palau')

The first ever Survivor alumni to lose their life was Jennifer Lyon, popularly known as Jen. The nutritionist-turned-actress and TV personality competed in the 10th season of the show in 2005, that took place in Koror Island in the Island of Palau.

Jenn was diagnosed with breast cancer in the same year and would fight bravely before she finally succumbed to the disease in January 2010.

8 B.B. Andersen - Season 1 ('Survivor: Borneo')

Kansas resident B.B. Andersen was not only one of the very first Survivor contestants, he was also only the second to ever be voted out in the history of the show. In total, he lasted only six days in Borneo, Malaysia before his teammates got rid of him.

Like Jen, Andersen died from cancer - of the brain in his case - in October 2013.

7 Caleb Bankston - Season 27 ('Survivor: Blood vs. Water')

Survivor: Blood vs. Water castaway Caleb Bankston was probably as famous for his participation on the show as he was for his romantic involvement with fellow contestant, Colton Cumbie. With their wedding scheduled for October 2014, Bankston tragically perished in a railway accident in Birmingham, Alabama, just four months before.

Bankston is one of the saddest Survivor fatalities. This is not just because of how his death occurred, but also because many think Cumbie and him would have been one of the few Survivor couples who endure to date.

6 Dan Kay - Season 17 ('Survivor: Gabon')

Former Boston attorney Dan Kay was involved in the 17th season of Survivor, which was filmed around the coastal towns of Nyonie and Ekwata in Gabon, West Africa. Kay managed to last 21 days on the show, before he was eventually voted out by members of his 'Kota' tribe.

He passed away nearly nine years later in January 2017, although the cause of his death remains a largely private matter.

5 Ashley Massaro - Season 15 ('Survivor: China')

Ashley Massaro was known for more than just her time on Survivor: China. The New York City-born star was a professional wrestler before her stint on the show. She also dabbled in modeling and radio DJing afterwards.

Like Andersen in Season 1, Massaro only lasted six days and was the second contestant voted out in Season 15. She died by apparent suicide in May 2019, ten days before her 40th birthday.

4 Rudy Boesch - Season 1 ('Survivor: Borneo') and Season 8 ('Survivor: All-Stars')

Former United States Navy Seal Rudy Boesch was the first castaway to die after having participated in two Survivor editions. He was one of the star attractions from the original season, having only been two steps short of ultimate victory. He returned for the all-star season four years later, but was voted out on Day 6 this time around.

In November 2019, he died aged 91, following a short battle with Alzheimer's.

3 Cliff Robinson - Season 28 ('Survivor: Cagayan')

Former NBA star Cliff Robinson contested the 28th season with 17 other castaways in the Cagayan province of the Philippines. He didn't get to stay too long in the competition, as he was eliminated on Day 14 as the fifth contestant voted out that season.

He died of lymphoma in August 2020, at the age of 53.

2 Angie Jakusz - Season 10 ('Survivor: Palau')

After Jenn Lyon, Survivor: Palau suffered its second casualty in January 2021, when Angie Jakusz also lost her battle to cancer. Louisiana resident Jakusz was aged 40 at the time of her death, about 16 years after she first became famous as 'no-fun Angie' in Season 10 of the series.

Jakusz was the sixth contestant to bow out of that edition of Survivor, after 12 days on the show.

1 Sunday Burquest - Season 33 ('Survivor: Millennials vs. Gen X)

Survivor fans will hope that youth pastor and author Sunday Burquest will be the last castaway they lose in a long time. The Season 33 contestant was the latest to pass away, sadly from cancer as well. The sad thing about the whole situation is that she had already beaten the disease once in 2012, only to suffer a relapse to her oesophagus and ovaries.

While on the show, Burquest persisted an impressive 35 days, with only six contestants remaining after her. She passed away in April 2021.
